House quilt blocks can be made with traditional template piecing or foundation paper piecing (FPP). Choose a pattern by its method, finished size, section layout, and whether it includes step-by-step instructions—not just by its house design. The pattern’s own printing, cutting, and assembly directions should guide your work.

Choose a construction method

Traditional template piecing and foundation paper piecing build a house block differently. Neither is a universal rule for every house pattern: follow the instructions supplied with the design you choose.

Method How it works What to check
Traditional template piecing MadamSew’s free house-block tutorial has you print a template, cut labeled fabric pieces, and sew them together in rows. Its instructions press seams toward the dark fabric. Use that tutorial’s template, cutting guidance, row order, and pressing directions for its block; do not assume they apply to other patterns.
Foundation paper piecing (FPP) Fabric is sewn onto a printed paper foundation. Shabby Fabrics describes this method as a way to construct precise points, angles, and details, and offers free tutorials. Check how many sections the design uses, how they are joined, and whether the download includes a how-to lesson or only foundation patterns.

If you are looking for a free house quilt block pattern, MadamSew’s tutorial is a traditional-piecing example. For a paper-pieced house block pattern, Alejandra’s Quilt Studio shows an FPP design made in three sections, then trimmed and joined. These are different construction workflows, so compare the instructions before choosing.

Compare pattern size and instructions before cutting

A finished block’s dimensions and the contents of a download vary by pattern. Confirm the finished size and printing directions before cutting fabric; a pattern may provide foundations without teaching the paper-piecing process.

  • Finished size: Check the stated size and whether it is finished or unfinished. Do not infer one from a thumbnail or product name.
  • Sections and layout: Find out whether the block is assembled in rows, in multiple paper-pieced sections, or another arrangement. Alejandra’s Quilt Studio’s cited house design uses three FPP sections that are trimmed and joined.
  • Instruction scope: Read what is included in the download. Hunter’s Design Studio says its Tiny Houses download supplies block foundations in several finished sizes from 1 inch to 6 inches, but is for the blocks only and does not include how-to paper-piecing instructions.
  • Printing and assembly: Follow the selected pattern’s printing scale, cutting directions, and assembly order. Do not cut until you have checked them.
  • Cost and availability: Free tutorials and paid downloadable patterns both exist; check the individual listing for current price, availability, and contents.

If you want a multi-size tiny house block pattern, Hunter’s Design Studio’s Tiny Houses is one example of foundations offered in several finished sizes. Its download does not include a paper-piecing lesson, so it is best suited to someone who already knows the method or has a separate tutorial.

Gather tools for the pattern you choose

MadamSew’s traditional tutorial names a rotary cutter, ruler, cutting mat, and quarter-inch quilting foot. These are tools relevant to that tutorial’s cutting and sewing instructions, not mandatory equipment for every house block. Check your pattern’s supply list and use tools suited to its method and pieces.

Find a house style that fits your project

House blocks can suggest cottages, churches, gingerbread houses, or a whole village. Joe, June and Mae lists PDFs across these and other village themes; check each listing for its current method, finished dimensions, instructions, and availability. For more design directions, browse cottage and village quilt-block patterns and compare the actual pattern details rather than assuming similarly themed blocks are constructed alike.
