Jacquard fabric is cloth with a pattern built into its woven or knitted structure, rather than printed onto its surface. “Jacquard” describes how the design is made—not the fiber, feel, quality, or care needs. A jacquard may be suitable for a garment, cushion, or upholstery, but you have to assess the specific fabric to know.
What makes a fabric jacquard?
In jacquard weaving, the pattern is created by controlling selected warp threads—the lengthwise threads held on the loom—as the cloth is woven. The resulting motif is part of the textile’s construction and may be visible or tactile. By contrast, a printed design is applied to the surface of already-made fabric.

The name does not identify a fiber or guarantee a particular feel or performance. Jacquard fabrics can be made from different fibers and vary in weight, drape, stretch, texture, durability, and care requirements. A raised or intricate pattern alone does not establish that a fabric is higher quality.
How the Jacquard mechanism changed weaving
French inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752–1834) developed the mechanism associated with his name. National Museums Scotland dates his first demonstration of it to 1801. Linked punched cards encoded pattern instructions: holes in the cards controlled which warp threads were lifted, making intricate patterns possible without an assistant manually controlling pattern cords. The Metropolitan Museum of Art likewise dates the mechanism’s introduction to 1801 and notes that it made complex weave structures more practical than the drawloom setup.

The mechanism also has a computing connection, but it is best described precisely: National Museums Scotland says Jacquard’s punch-card system influenced Charles Babbage’s use of punch cards to program his Analytical Engine. That makes it an influence in the history of punched-card control, not evidence that the loom invented computers.
Jacquard, damask, brocade, and matelassé
Jacquard is an umbrella term for a way of forming patterns, not one particular look. Damask, brocade, and matelassé are examples of distinct textile structures or effects that may be made using jacquard techniques; their names are not interchangeable with “jacquard.”

- Brocade: FibreGuard characterizes it as more decorative.
- Matelassé: FibreGuard describes its appearance as quilted or padded.
These broad descriptions do not specify the fiber, quality, or care requirements of an individual piece. Check the product details rather than relying on the style name alone.
What jacquard fabric is used for
The fabric’s weight, drape, stretch, composition, and durability determine what it suits. A lighter, more fluid jacquard may work for clothing; a more structured fabric may be a better candidate for a bag, cushion, or decorative interior. Mutsaers lists jackets, skirts, dresses, trousers, bags, pouches, and cushions among possible uses.

In a 2023 feature, Architectural Digest described jacquard in contemporary interiors, including couches, banquettes, pillows, and place mats. These examples show that the construction is used in interior design, but they do not establish a current popularity surge or measure how popular it is in 2026.

When shopping for jacquard fabric by the yard, match the actual fabric to the job. Compare the relevant product details rather than treating the label as a performance promise.

- Fiber content: Check what the cloth is made from; jacquard does not mean silk, cotton, polyester, or any other particular fiber.
- Weight and drape: Consider whether it will hang and move as needed for a garment, or hold enough structure for a bag or cushion.
- Stretch and intended use: Confirm the fabric’s stretch suits your pattern or project.
- Width and durability: Make sure the listed width works for your cutting layout, and that the fabric is appropriate for the use it will get.
- Care instructions: Check the maker’s instructions for the specific fiber and finish, especially for upholstery.
Cutting, sewing, and caring for jacquard
Jacquard fabrics do not all require the same sewing or cleaning method. For cutting, Mutsaers recommends laying fabric flat without tension and using sharp cutting tools to limit shifting and distortion. Choose a needle for the fabric’s weight, then test stitch length and tension on an offcut before sewing the project. Cotton-rich fabric may benefit from pre-washing, but follow the instructions for the particular quality you bought.
For furniture fabric, follow its care label. FibreGuard’s cleaning guidance is manufacturer advice; it is not a universal rule for every jacquard upholstery fabric. Fiber and finish affect the appropriate cleaning method, so do not assume the word “jacquard” means machine washing, dry cleaning, or any single upholstery treatment.
