Poly was an early prompt-based AI texture generator, but its current status as a dedicated seamless-texture tool is unclear. Poly’s present-day branded products are described as a cloud file browser and a broader creative studio, not as the original WithPoly texture workflow. If you find a working texture-generation page, verify its exports and license before using it in a painting, game, or client project. For a dependable material workflow, assess the output as a repeating, multi-map surface—not just an attractive image.

What Poly was

Poly, also known as WithPoly, launched in 2022 as an AI design-asset generator with an initial focus on 3D textures. Its historical pitch was simple: describe a material in a prompt, generate texture swatches, and refine or export a result. Product Hunt’s launch listing described customizable, high-resolution assets and commercial-use positioning, alongside a browseable asset collection. Those are launch-era claims, not confirmation of the current product’s features or license. Poly on Product Hunt

That early workflow appealed to artists who needed a particular surface—weathered brick, colored plaster, brushed metal—without searching a stock library or painting every variation by hand. Community posts from the period describe prompt-generated swatches and subsequent upscaling, including references to 2K, 3K, 4K, or custom sizes. Treat those resolution descriptions as historical user reports, not current specifications. Historical community discussion of WithPoly

Is Poly still a dedicated seamless-texture generator?

That is the key qualification for anyone considering Poly now. The currently visible Poly website presents an AI file browser and creative workspace. Its Poly Studio page describes a broader environment for image generation, image-to-image work, inpainting, style transfer, asset organization, composition, collaboration, and batch processing. Neither page, as presented in the available product information, establishes a current dedicated seamless-texture workflow with documented export formats, map specifications, pricing, or licensing.

Third-party pages still describe the former WithPoly text-to-texture workflow and PBR map creation, and directories may refer to old texture-browsing URLs. Those references do not prove that the old service remains available. A third-party Poly listing and Poly status references are historical context, not a substitute for current product documentation. There is no basis here to say Poly definitively shut down; its current dedicated texture-generation status is simply not established.

Before depending on it, check that the texture workspace actually loads, that you can export the files you need, and that current terms cover your intended use. Do not assume that an old WithPoly account, tutorial, price, or commercial-use promise carries over to another Poly-branded product.

What makes a texture seamless—and what makes it a material

Tileable image

A seamless or tileable image is designed so that its left and right edges, and its top and bottom edges, meet when repeated. A single preview can hide defects; a texture that looks convincing once may reveal a hard border or a conspicuous repeated feature across a large surface.

PBR material

A material for a 3D renderer may use several coordinated maps. Common channels include base color (also called albedo), roughness, metallic, normal, height or displacement, and ambient occlusion (AO). A generator that gives you a good-looking color image has not necessarily supplied a complete, consistent PBR material. The other maps need to describe the same surface rather than inventing contradictory detail.

Production-ready surface

A usable material also needs plausible physical scale, suitable resolution for its camera distance, sensible map values, and acceptable behavior under different lights. AI can make a visually appealing tile that still has baked shadows, ambiguous scale, unrealistic metallic values, false depth, or distinctive motifs that repeat too obviously. For hand-painted work, a generated surface may be a starting point for a paintover or a background detail; it still needs inspection at the scale and lighting of the finished image.

How the historical Poly workflow worked

The following describes the workflow associated with the earlier WithPoly product; it is not a verified guide to the current Poly interface. Older community accounts describe entering a prompt, choosing a generated swatch, adjusting it, and upscaling or exporting. Historical IndieDev discussion

  1. Describe the surface. Enter a material prompt such as “weathered red brick,” “dark terrazzo,” or “brushed aluminum.”
  2. Compare variants. Generate several swatches rather than treating the first result as final.
  3. Refine the choice. Historical product descriptions emphasized changes to color and style; the exact available controls today are not established.
  4. Prepare the files. Older user accounts mention upscaling and PBR-related workflows, but current resolution options and map exports are unverified.
  5. Test in context. Import the files into Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, or another target application and inspect the surface on a plane, sphere, or actual model.
  6. Correct what the generator missed. Adjust texture scale, roughness, normal strength, and repetition manually as needed.

Write prompts that specify the surface

A useful material prompt describes surface properties, not just the object the material came from. “Stone wall” leaves scale, lighting, style, and wear open to interpretation. A more constrained prompt gives the generator fewer ways to turn the request into a lit scene or a picture of an object.

Example prompts

  • Brick: “Seamless tileable weathered red brick wall material, medium-size irregular bricks, fine chips and restrained mortar variation, neutral flat diffuse lighting, no perspective, no cast shadows, no text or logos.”
  • Wood: “Tileable matte oak plank surface, medium-width boards, subtle grain, small natural knots, warm neutral brown, flat diffuse lighting, no furniture, no shadows, no text.”
  • Concrete: “Seamless light-gray poured concrete material, fine aggregate and sparse pinholes, subtle tonal variation, no cracks larger than the grain, neutral diffuse lighting, no cast shadows, no writing.”
  • Metal: “Tileable brushed stainless-steel surface, fine horizontal grain, low-contrast variation, neutral color, no reflections of objects, no directional lighting gradients, no text or logos.”
  • Fabric: “Seamless coarse woven canvas, medium-scale plain weave, muted olive fibers, slight natural irregularity, even diffuse lighting, no folds, no shadows, no symbols.”
  • Stylized game surface: “Seamless hand-painted blue-gray stone material for a stylized game environment, broad readable planes with restrained chips, consistent medium scale, no perspective, no cast shadows, no text.”

Useful prompt ingredients include the material, finish or wear, pattern scale, visual style, lighting constraints, exclusions, and intended use. Adding “seamless” is a request, not proof: inspect the generated image in a repeat preview.

Quality-check a generated texture before using it

Use this checklist whether the file comes from Poly or another generator. It separates a promising image from a material that behaves well in a painting or 3D scene.

  • Edges: Do the left and right edges meet? Do the top and bottom edges meet?
  • Repeat pattern: Does it still look natural at 2×2, 4×4, and 8×8 repeats? Look for a recognizable stone, scratch, stain, or knot appearing at regular intervals.
  • Lighting: Is there a baked highlight, cast shadow, or directional gradient in the color image that will fight the scene lighting?
  • Scale: Does the grain, brick, weave, or aggregate look right beside a known-size object?
  • Map agreement: Does the normal map reinforce features visible in the base color? Do roughness and height describe the same surface?
  • Material values: Are metallic values reserved for genuinely conductive surfaces? Does roughness vary plausibly rather than simply tracking brightness?
  • Artifacts: Are there accidental letters, symbols, faces, logos, or object-like forms?
  • Resolution and lighting: Is the resolution adequate at the intended camera distance, and does the surface remain credible under neutral, hard, and grazing light?
  • Rights: Do the current terms permit the intended commercial use, client delivery, or redistribution?

A practical workflow for any texture generator

Because Poly’s current texture interface and exports are not clearly documented, this workflow is tool-agnostic. It is useful if a Poly texture workspace is available, and it applies just as well to another generator.

  1. Define the material. Specify material category, physical scale, roughness, wear pattern, color range, and whether the surface is organic, manufactured, or stylized. Say if it must withstand close-up rendering.
  2. Generate multiple variants. Compare seam quality, scale, plausibility, and unwanted details. Do not choose solely by the thumbnail.
  3. Test tiling. Preview at least 2×2, 4×4, and 8×8. If a seam is visible, use a dedicated seamless-conversion or image-editing step instead of assuming another prompt will fix it.
  4. Verify or build the maps. Check normal orientation, height strength, roughness range, metallic mask, and AO intensity. In a conventional PBR workflow, base color is color data; roughness, metallic, height, normal, and AO are data maps, not color-managed images.
  5. Test in the target renderer. Inspect under neutral studio lighting, hard directional light, and grazing light, using the actual shader and intended camera distance.
  6. Keep provenance with the asset. Record the prompt, reference image if used, generation date, tool and account tier, output resolution, map settings, license terms, and manual edits. This makes revisions and rights checks easier if a service changes.

Strengths and limits of the Poly idea

Why the historical approach was appealing

  • Prompting can be faster than searching a large library for an unusual surface.
  • It makes material ideation accessible to artists who do not want to build every texture from scratch.
  • Generating variants can speed up color and style exploration.
  • It can be useful for concept art, prototypes, blockouts, or background surfaces where rapid exploration matters more than guaranteed technical consistency.

These are strengths of the historical positioning and prompt-based approach, not claims from current hands-on testing of Poly.

Risks to weigh

  • Product continuity: Current Poly-branded pages emphasize file browsing and a general creative studio, while older descriptions focus on textures. That makes availability and continuity the first practical risk.
  • Material quality: Attractive images can contain repetition artifacts, baked lighting, inconsistent scale, weak normal detail, implausible metallicity, or PBR maps that disagree with the source.
  • License uncertainty: Launch-era commercial positioning does not establish current rights. Check whether terms cover free users, client work, raw-file redistribution, community assets, and any limits on generated content.
  • Production fit: A browser workflow may not meet requirements for offline operation, batch generation, API access, version locking, reproducibility, team asset management, consistent channel naming, or privacy for unreleased work.

Choose by the job, not the name

  • Fast concepting: Try a prompt-based generator, but judge the result as a visual study until repeat behavior, maps, and rights check out.
  • Blender-centered work: Compare PolySuite’s Blender-oriented tool set and current tier details against the narrower task you need done.
  • Integrated AI 3D work: Polyx may suit a workflow that also uses generated models and engine-ready exports; estimate likely credit use before committing.
  • Local or offline processing: TextureForge advertises desktop and offline capabilities, but verify that the relevant offering is available rather than merely announced.
  • Existing capture workflow: Polycam’s web texture generator is a possible fit for eligible plan users; confirm output type and limits before treating it as a PBR solution.
  • Authored photoreal materials: Poliigon is the distinct non-AI option for readers who value consistent prepared assets.
  • Studio-scale or privacy-sensitive production: Prioritize documented batch/API support, repeatable versions, team controls, export conventions, privacy terms, and a clear license. A visually strong demo alone cannot answer those requirements.

Common failures and how to recover

Visible seams

The output may not be genuinely edge-compatible. Use a seamless conversion tool, inspect an offset preview to locate the join, then clone, heal, or inpaint the seam. Retest at several repeat scales; regenerate only if repairs damage the pattern.

Baked shadows or highlights

The generator may have treated the request as a photograph of an object instead of a flat material. Specify flat diffuse lighting, no cast shadows, and no perspective; remove strong gradients and highlights from the base color, then rebuild normal and roughness maps from a neutral image where needed.

Obvious repeated motifs

Distinctive generated details become conspicuous when tiled. Try a higher-variation result, blend or crop multiple variants, add procedural breakup, or use a larger tile across an uninterrupted surface.

Incorrect metallicity or false depth

Darkness and gloss do not make a surface metallic. Paint or correct a separate metallic mask and reserve metallic values for actual conductive material. If apparent depth does not correspond to real relief, reduce normal strength, use height selectively, and remove lighting gradients from the albedo.

Wrong physical scale

State approximate dimensions in the prompt—for example, “5-cm brick courses” or “2-mm brushed metal grain”—then calibrate against a known object in Blender or the target engine. Adjust UV scale rather than stretching the image arbitrarily.

Text, logos, or recognizable imagery

Add exclusions to the prompt, then inpaint or replace unwanted regions. Do not put an output into commercial use until artifacts are removed and the license is clear.

The old tool or URL no longer works

Check whether WithPoly redirects to another Poly product, and verify the product name, sign-in system, and account continuity. Old tutorials may not reflect current controls. Archive any successful assets locally, and switch to a documented alternative if the dedicated texture workflow is unavailable.
