Photoshop’s generative AI can add, remove, or replace objects, extend a frame, create backgrounds, and produce new visual starting points. The reliable workflow is to make a deliberate selection, choose the right tool and model, generate alternatives, then finish the strongest result with ordinary Photoshop editing. This guide covers current Photoshop desktop workflows; tools, model choices, and access can vary by app version, plan, operating system, and region.

What Photoshop’s generative AI tools do

Photoshop’s current generative toolkit includes several tools for different jobs. Generative AI predicts plausible pixels from a prompt, a selected area, and nearby image context; it does not recover details that were never photographed or guarantee factual accuracy.

Generative Upscale Increasing image clarity and sharpness An image and output settings
Remove Tool Retouching unwanted elements A brush stroke over the area

See Adobe’s overview of Photoshop generative-AI features. These tools complement rather than replace layers, masks, healing and cloning, curves, channels, and perspective corrections.

Before you generate

  • Save a working copy. Keep the original layer and save a layered PSD or PSB so you can revise the edit.
  • Check access and connection. Cloud generation requires an Adobe account, an internet connection, a supported app, and an eligible plan for the feature.
  • Plan the selection. The selection boundary defines where Photoshop may change pixels. Include enough surrounding context to help with edges, contact points, and blending; avoid including areas you need to preserve.
  • Choose AI only when it fits. Generative tools are useful for exploration, removal, background changes, and extensions. For exact geometry, repeated patterns, or critical typography, conventional tools may give more control.
  • Check credits. Adobe’s monthly generative-credit allowance depends on the plan; credits are tied to the Adobe ID and do not roll over. Check the account/profile area in Photoshop or your Adobe account, since interface locations can change. See Adobe’s credit access and use details.

Use Generative Fill to add, remove, or replace an object

On Photoshop desktop, Generative Fill is the central selection-based workflow. Adobe documents the current steps in its Generative Fill guide.

Add an object

  1. Choose File > Open and load the image.
  2. Use the Selection Brush, Lasso, Object Selection, or another suitable selection tool to mark where the object should go. Give the selection enough room for the object and its edges.
  3. Select Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar. If it is not visible, check that a selection is active and the bar is shown.
  4. Choose an available Adobe Firefly or partner model, then enter a concrete description, for example: small red ceramic vase on the table, soft window light, realistic photography.
  5. Select Generate. Compare the variations in the Properties panel, keep the best, or generate again.
  6. Inspect at 100% magnification. Clean edges or artifacts with masks and retouching tools as needed.

For an object that should sit on a surface, include the contact area or shadow in the selection when appropriate. A separate painted shadow can be more convincing than relying on the first generation.

JCPAL Dash Adobe Photoshop Wireless Shortcut Keyboard for Mac/PC
  • Built for Photoshop users who want to edit faster: Photoshop's most-used commands come pre-mapped one per key, named and color-coded so you can scan quickly while you work.
  • Remap anything in KeyStudio, the browser-based remapping tool we built for Dash keyboard. Nothing to install, and the layout saves onto the keyboard so it works the same on every machine you use.
  • 20 spare shortcut keycaps in the box: move the keys to match the way you actually cut and grade, rather than learning someone else's layout.
  • The compact, low-profile design frees desk space and keeps your mouse within reach for better posture. Winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2025 and designed in Vancouver, Canada. We've been building tools for creative work since 2009, and every Dash comes a 12 month warranty.
  • Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.

Remove an object

  1. Select the unwanted object and a modest amount of the surrounding area.
  2. Use Generative Fill with a blank prompt for a straightforward contextual replacement, or try the Remove Tool for a simpler retouch.
  3. Review multiple variations for broken lines, repeated texture, reflections, and seams.
  4. Repair defects with the Healing Brush, Clone Stamp, Patch Tool, or manual painting.

If the area needs a specific replacement, describe it—such as continuous brick wall or grass and soft shadows—rather than only naming the object to remove. Straight lines, text, patterned surfaces, faces, hands, reflections, and transparent objects can be difficult cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace an object

  1. Select the object, its edges, and any shadow that should change.
  2. Open Generative Fill and describe the replacement’s material, color, orientation, and light.
  3. Generate and compare alternatives. If the new object is clipped or poorly integrated, adjust the selection and try again.

A useful prompt structure is object + material or color + view or orientation + lighting + realism or style. For example: replace with a matte-black studio microphone, three-quarter view, soft light from the left, realistic product photography.

Extend the frame or replace the background

Extend an image with Generative Expand

  1. Choose the Crop tool and drag the crop boundary beyond the original canvas.
  2. Choose Generative Expand from the Contextual Task Bar.
  3. Leave the prompt blank for a contextual continuation, or specify the scene—for example: continue the beach, low waves, pale morning sky, same camera perspective.
  4. Select Generate, compare the variations, and adjust the crop if needed.

Expand creates new pixels outside the frame; it does not reveal real detail beyond the original photograph.

Replace a background

  1. Separate the subject with Select Subject, Object Selection, or a carefully refined manual mask.
  2. Inspect hair, fine edges, transparent areas, and shadows before generating.
  3. Choose Generate Background or select the background and use Generative Fill.
  4. Describe the setting, time of day, perspective, and lighting. For example: minimal warm-gray studio backdrop, soft directional light from upper left, realistic product photography.
  5. Compare variations, then refine the mask and lighting manually.

A plausible background can still conflict with the original subject lighting. Check edge color spill, shadows, reflections, depth of field, white balance, contrast, perspective, and horizon alignment.

Generate a new image and guide results with references

Create an image from text

  1. Create a new Photoshop document and choose Generate Image.
  2. Select an available model and enter a prompt describing the subject, setting, composition, light, and style.
  3. Generate alternatives and continue editing the chosen result with layers, selections, and masks.

Generate Image can provide concept art, moodboards, background plates, composite starting points, and thumbnail ideas. Inspect anatomy, text, logos, product details, repeated patterns, and factual claims rather than assuming they are correct.

Use a reference image

Adobe’s current desktop workflow supports reference images for guiding consistency. With Adobe Firefly models, the reference can guide an object or the whole image, with intents such as swapping the selected area or placing the reference subject into it. Adobe lists different reference limits for partner models: up to three images for Flux and up to eight for Gemini in the documented workflow. These options and limits may change. Follow Adobe’s reference-image instructions.

  1. Make a selection and choose Generative Fill.
  2. Choose Reference image in the Contextual Task Bar, then select Choose image and upload the reference.
  3. Choose whether the reference describes an object or the whole image, then select the intended swap or placement behavior.
  4. Generate and evaluate the result.

A reference can guide composition or subject characteristics; it does not ensure exact identity, geometry, or pixel-perfect reproduction.

Write prompts that give you control

Strong prompts describe the desired result, not just the editing command. Include the subject, placement or action, environment, camera view, light, material, and style when those details matter. Prompt wording affects relevance, as Adobe also notes in its Firefly FAQ.

Less useful More specific Why it helps
add a car dark-green vintage coupe parked on the right side of the street, three-quarter rear view, overcast daylight, wet pavement reflections, realistic documentary photography Specifies placement, viewpoint, lighting, environment, and visual treatment
make it better matte ceramic bowl, centered on the wooden table, soft window light from the left, realistic product photograph Gives the model visible details to aim for
  • Use a blank prompt for uncomplicated object removal or texture continuation.
  • Keep prompts internally consistent; contradictory lighting or style instructions make outcomes harder to judge.
  • When a result misses, simplify or change one detail at a time rather than stacking many adjectives.
  • Use a reference image when consistency matters more than open-ended invention.

Choose a model for the job

Photoshop’s model picker includes Adobe and partner models. In the current Generative Fill documentation, Adobe lists Firefly Image 5, Firefly Fill & Expand, and Firefly Image 1, alongside Gemini variants and FLUX models. Lists and availability differ by feature and can change; check Adobe’s model-selection documentation and the picker in your version.

  • Series consistency: Reuse the model, reference, prompt structure, dimensions, camera angle, and lighting where possible.

No model is universally best: outcomes depend on the source, selection, prompt, task, and current model version.

Finish the composite in Photoshop

Generated output is a starting point, not a finished guarantee. Place or generate an object, position and scale it, then try Harmonize to adjust lighting, colors, shadows, and details. Compare before and after and correct remaining issues with masks, curves, color balance, blur, noise, and separate shadow work.

  • Keep the original layer intact and use masks rather than erasing source pixels.
  • Keep generated results on separate layers where possible and name them clearly.
  • Review at fit-to-screen for composition and at 100% for seams, texture, and edge defects.
  • Flatten only when quality checks and delivery requirements are complete; export a final copy rather than overwriting the source.
  • For commercial work, retain the source, prompt, model, chosen variation, manual changes, and any required client approval or disclosure.

Credits, access, and commercial use

Credit use is not uniform. Adobe says most standard generative features use one credit per generation, while some features use more; Harmonize is listed at five credits per generation, and Generative Upscale can use more than one depending on output size. Premium partner-model features may have separate access requirements. See Adobe’s standard and premium feature information and generative-credit overview. Adobe says standard-generation access is unlimited on Creative Cloud Pro, Firefly, or credits plans according to its documentation; premium features still use credits. Unused credits do not roll over, and exhausted credits may mean waiting for reset or buying additional credits. Terms and allowances depend on plan and can change.

Adobe’s stated policy is that outputs from features without a beta label may be used in commercial projects; beta outputs may generally be used commercially unless the product explicitly says otherwise. That is Adobe’s policy statement, not a guarantee that every result is free of other rights issues. Copyrightability depends on applicable law, and users remain responsible for considering trademarks, trade dress, publicity and privacy rights, source-image licenses, contracts, client rules, platform disclosure requirements, and risks of misleading claims. Avoid using generated images as fake documentary evidence or deceptive product imagery, and seek legal and ethical review before commercially imitating a living artist’s distinctive style.

Troubleshoot common problems

Problem Likely cause What to try
Result looks pasted in Selection boundary, light, scale, perspective, or contact shadow does not fit Improve the selection, include the contact area, try Harmonize, correct perspective, and add a separate shadow
Subject is cut off Selection leaves too little room or context Expand the selection, provide more surrounding area, use a reference, or build the object in stages
Faces, hands, or text are distorted Fine anatomy and exact lettering are unreliable generation targets Try more variations or a supported reference; preserve logos and typography as real layers and retouch defects manually
Pattern or straight line breaks Repeated geometry is difficult to continue seamlessly Align selection with the pattern, use a blank prompt for simple continuation, generate smaller areas, then repair with Clone Stamp or Healing tools
Generative Fill is missing No active selection, hidden Contextual Task Bar, unsupported document mode, sign-in/connectivity issue, app version, plan, or entitlement Confirm an active selection, show the contextual controls, check document mode, sign-in, internet, app updates, and account access; look in Properties or related contextual controls
Generation fails or stalls Connection, selection size, prompt, model, service, entitlement, or credits Save, check connection and credits, reduce the selection, simplify or blank the prompt, try another model, restart Photoshop, check Adobe service status, or test a new document
Results vary across a series Changes in prompt, model, framing, or reference Fix the reference, prompt template, dimensions, camera and light descriptions, and model where possible; review each element separately
