In December 2017, photographer Charles Peterson had just joined Instagram, bringing classic photographs and glimpses of everyday life to a platform he had previously regarded as mobile-first. His first week there marked not a rejection of film, but another step in a long adjustment to digital photography—and a chance to work out how his deliberate approach might fit a medium built around instant images.

This account is based on Kurt Schlosser’s GeekWire profile published December 29, 2017. It describes Peterson’s first week on Instagram at that time, not his current account activity or plans.

Why Peterson joined Instagram in 2017

Peterson had spent years photographing Seattle-area bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney during the 1980s and 1990s. By the time he signed up for Instagram, he was sharing both photographs from that archive and images from everyday life. The profile says he had been reluctant to join because he saw the service as primarily mobile and did not think he had a suitable phone.

He eventually bought a used Google Pixel XL for $300, according to the 2017 interview. That is a period detail about Peterson’s own purchase, not a current price or recommendation. GeekWire reported that the account had 15 posts and 700 followers when the article appeared; it also cited 800 million monthly Instagram users as the service’s contemporaneous figure.

From film and the darkroom to a digitized archive

Film and darkroom printing had shaped Peterson’s photographic practice. He told GeekWire that he was “old school” and that the early digital transition had been difficult because, in his view, early digital technology could not match what he could do with film.

Digitizing his archive with an Imacon desktop scanner changed his relationship with the darkroom. As he put it, “That sort of changed my life in one aspect, to be able to start digitizing my archives and get out of the dark room, because the dark room was literally killing me, from the chemistry.” The profile presents the scanner as part of his own working history; it does not assess scanners or recommend equipment.

How he approached Instagram’s immediacy

Instagram’s pace was different from the more considered work Peterson was accustomed to. “It just relies on the instantaneousness of imagery more, I think, than I’m used to, so I kind of have to find my way through it,” he said.

That did not mean he wanted filters to do the expressive work. “I don’t use filters much at all. You just need to take the picture right in the first place,” he told GeekWire, cautioning against overusing them. He emphasized intention and layers in the photograph itself. Those comments describe his own preferences, not a rule that every photographer should avoid filters.

Everyday family photographs and a separate project

Peterson distinguished casual pictures of his children from a longer-term project he was then calling Child’s Play. He told GeekWire he had taken approximately 60,000 photographs of his children over the years. The project, by contrast, was intended to evoke viewers’ own childhood memories rather than function simply as a collection of family snapshots.

The profile describes that project as a plan at the time of publication. It does not establish its later status, publication history, or current availability.

What the profile says about Peterson’s work and career

GeekWire reported that print sales and image licensing were major parts of Peterson’s income in 2017. It also mentions books without naming a title or establishing current sales or print availability. The article is therefore useful as a snapshot of how he described his practice and livelihood then, but it cannot confirm what he sells or licenses now.

In the interview, Peterson called Seattle’s music scene “the last great music scene before the age of the internet.” That is his characterization of the era, not an independently established ranking.
