The best site depends on the cartoon you want. Media.io, Fotor and LunaPic are good starting points for turning a selfie into a cartoon; Avatar Maker, Cartoonify and Bitmoji build characters from chosen features rather than transforming a photograph; and BeFunky, Canva, PiZap and Picsart are better when the result must become a comic, sticker or finished design. “Free” can mean a free preview, limited credits, a watermark or a low-resolution export, so check the download step before relying on any service.
Choose the right kind of cartoon maker
| What you want | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast one-click selfie conversion | Media.io, Fotor, LunaPic | Upload a photo, choose an effect and download if the free tier permits it. |
| Polished illustrated or comic effect | BeFunky, Fotor | More deliberate artistic styles than a basic filter. |
| Avatar built from facial features | Avatar Maker, Cartoonify, Bitmoji | Choose hair, face, clothing and accessories without uploading a selfie. |
| Anime or stylized AI result | Fotor, Cutout.pro, Media.io | AI style categories can produce anime, 3D, fantasy or chibi-inspired results. |
| Messaging emoji | Bitmoji | Designed for expressive stickers and social use, not exact photo likeness. |
| Cartoon placed into a poster or social graphic | Canva, Picsart, PiZap | Combine the portrait with text, backgrounds, stickers and layouts. |
| No-photo experimentation | Avatar Maker, Pick A Face, Cartoonify | Construct a character from parts rather than sending an image to a server. |
26 sites, organized by what they actually do
1. Media.io — fastest general-purpose photo cartoonizer
Media.io uses an upload, style-selection and save workflow. Its page presents cartoon conversion for people, pets, streets and other subjects, with browser-based use across devices. The service says uploaded files and generated content are deleted within seven days; that is a vendor statement, not an independent audit. Check the current free quota, account requirement, resolution and watermark at download.
2. Fotor — broad AI styles and prompt support
Fotor accepts a photo and offers vendor-defined categories such as 3D, kawaii, chibi and fantasy. It also supports text-prompt cartoon creation, so it can invent a character instead of preserving your exact face. The free generator may have credit, quality or export restrictions; consult Fotor’s pricing page before treating it as unlimited.
#1 Best Overall
- Over 100 pages of blank comic book templates in a large 8.5 x 11 format for young creators
- Features a variety of panel layouts to inspire original storytelling and artistic expression
- Perfect for kids who love comics, drawing, and creating their own illustrated adventures
3. BeFunky — strongest for comic and graphic styles
In BeFunky’s Photo Editor, open Artsy and choose a Cartoonizer effect. The page lists cartoon, comic, graphic-novel, pixel-art, GFX and DLX styles and says the Cartoonizer effects are exclusive to Plus subscribers. It is therefore a good paid option for a polished illustration, but not a reliable choice for a completely free download. Plan details are at BeFunky Plus.
4. LunaPic — genuinely simple, old-school filtering
LunaPic’s Cartoon editor exposes Upload Image, Effects, Cartoon and Save Image. It also includes crop, resize, layers, transparency, drawing, text and animation tools. This is a traditional filter, not a modern identity-preserving AI generator; expect a dated interface and variable output quality.
5. Cartoon.Pho.to — straightforward facial effects
Cartoon.Pho.to is an upload-based photo-effect service aimed at quick facial cartooning. Use it when speed matters more than detailed control. Confirm current upload limits, download behavior and privacy terms on the live site.
6. Cutout.pro — AI portrait styles
Cutout.pro is designed for AI photo cartooning with portrait, anime, 3D and sketch-like possibilities. Free processing can depend on credits, output size or an account, so test the full generate-to-download path rather than assuming the landing-page preview is the final free file.
7. Avatar Maker — build without a selfie
Avatar Maker constructs a face from selectable features. Choose elements such as hair, eyes, face shape, clothing and accessories. It creates an avatar; it does not convert your photograph, which makes it useful when you do not want to upload personal imagery.
8. Bitmoji — best for messaging avatars
Bitmoji is a personal-emoji system connected to apps and Snapchat. It excels at expressive stickers and social reactions rather than a downloadable, realistic cartoon portrait. Consider the wider Bitmoji/Snap ecosystem and its account requirements before choosing it for a profile image.
Rank #2
9. Cartoonify — customizable character construction
Cartoonify is a manual avatar builder with many face, hair, clothing and accessory elements. Descriptions associated with the service mention PNG and SVG export, but verify those formats, transparency, resolution and current free availability in the editor before promising them for print or commercial work.
10. Snapstouch — basic cartoon and sketch effects
Snapstouch offers traditional online effects including cartoon, sketch, painting and color treatments. It suits quick experimentation, but confirm that the relevant editor and download still operate, and check image handling before uploading sensitive photos.
11. PiZap — cartoon effects plus social design
PiZap combines photo editing, collage and social-graphic tools with cartoon-style effects. It is useful when the portrait must be surrounded by text, frames or stickers. Some controls or exports may be premium, so distinguish a free preview from a usable final download.
12. Picture to People — large basic-effect library
Picture to People provides many simple image effects, including cartoon-like treatments. Its older interface can be less intuitive and output quality can vary. Choose it for free experimentation rather than a guaranteed polished avatar.
13. Cartoonize.net — dedicated cartoon workflow
Cartoonize.net focuses on converting photos into cartoon effects. Before selecting it as a free recommendation, verify the current effect count, account requirement, watermark, maximum resolution and pricing in the live workflow.
14. Photo-kako — extensive Japanese effect collection
Photo-kako offers a large library of photo effects and manual controls. The interface and documentation may be challenging for readers who do not read Japanese, and upload or export limits can differ by effect. It is better for exploration than a predictable one-click portrait service.

15. Picjoke — novelty montages and frames
Picjoke is aimed at humorous photo montages, templates and novelty effects. It can be fun for a joke or greeting image, but it is not the best choice when preserving your actual facial likeness is the priority.
16. Pick A Face — draw a face from parts
Pick A Face is an editor for constructing a face rather than uploading a photograph. That makes it suitable for anonymous characters, classroom activities and quick mock-ups. The trade-off is that creating a close likeness takes longer than applying a filter.
17. KusoCartoon — simple preset generator
KusoCartoon is a basic cartoon generator with preset styles. Treat it as an experimental option: confirm that the service is available, that downloads work, and that the current privacy policy explains how uploaded images are handled.
18. Image to Cartoon — dedicated conversion service
Image to Cartoon focuses on turning uploaded portraits into cartoon images. Do not repeat claims about encryption, deletion or unlimited free use unless the current first-party terms state them. Check the final file’s quality and watermark before recommending it for a profile or print.
19. VanceAI Toongineer — cartooning with enhancement tools
VanceAI combines AI cartooning with image enhancement utilities. Free attempts may be limited by credits or account status, and subscription terms can change. It is most useful when you also need sharpening or enlargement, not merely one free avatar.
20. AI Image Enlarger — cartooning plus upscaling
AI Image Enlarger is primarily an image utility. Its cartoon capability is secondary to enlargement and enhancement, so compare the result with a dedicated cartoonizer if likeness and style are more important than resolution.
Rank #4
21. WorkinTool — multi-purpose AI photo editing
WorkinTool provides photo-to-cartoon conversion alongside broader editing functions. Verify the free export, usage limits, commercial rights and whether processing requires an account before using it for client or business imagery.
22. Visual Paradigm Online — adjustable online editing
Visual Paradigm Online is better suited to manual editing and effects than automatic likeness preservation. Choose it when you want more control over a composition, and allow more time than you would for a one-click AI filter.
23. MyEdit — AI effects in a wider editor
MyEdit includes cartoon effects among broader AI photo tools. Check the current free credits, export restrictions and account rules; a free generation does not necessarily mean a free, full-resolution download.
24. YouCam Online Editor — portrait editing and effects
YouCam’s official destination is youcammakeup.com. It is associated with portrait retouching and avatar-style effects rather than a single guaranteed cartoon workflow. Confirm the exact web editor, mobile availability and subscription split before sending readers to it; an unrelated link should not be substituted.
25. Canva — best when the cartoon becomes a design
Canva’s AI image generator can create or help place an illustrated character in a poster, thumbnail, invitation or social post. Canva is not a dedicated selfie-cartoonizer, and AI access, credits and export features vary by plan. See Canva’s pricing page for current limits.
26. Picsart — creative editing and social content
Picsart combines AI generation, stickers, backgrounds and detailed editing. It is a strong choice for turning a cartoon portrait into social content, but the free/paid feature boundary and dedicated cartoon workflow should be checked in the current editor.
Best Value
How to cartoon yourself online
- Choose a sharp, front-facing photo with even lighting and one prominent face.
- Open the service’s photo-to-cartoon or cartoonizer page and upload the original file, not a compressed screenshot.
- Select a neutral style first, then try anime, comic, 3D or sketch options if available.
- Adjust intensity, background, expression or other controls exposed by the editor.
- Preview the complete result and inspect eyes, teeth, glasses, hairline, skin tone and facial hair.
- At download, check resolution, file type, watermark and whether an account or payment is required.
- If the likeness is poor, retry with a different crop or better-lit photograph.
Tool-specific paths
- Media.io: upload, choose a cartoon filter, then save the result, as described on its official page.
- BeFunky: open Photo Editor, choose Artsy, select a Cartoonizer effect, then save or download; the page currently identifies these effects as Plus-only.
- Fotor: upload, choose a style, let the AI transform the image and download; prompt-based creation is also available.
- LunaPic: upload an image, open Effects, choose Cartoon, then save.
Photos that produce better results
- Use a sharp, well-lit, front-facing original with the face large in the frame.
- Avoid sunglasses, deep shadows, extreme beauty filters and busy backgrounds.
- Crop before uploading when the tool tends to misread the subject.
- Try two or three photos if glasses, hair, tattoos or asymmetrical features are important to your identity.
- For groups, use a service that explicitly supports multi-face or full-scene processing; some tools focus only on the most prominent face.
- Pets, landscapes and objects may work, but results and controls are usually designed around portraits.
AI generators versus traditional filters
| Approach | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| AI photo transformation | Modern anime, 3D, fantasy and illustration styles; better subject and background recognition. | Can change identity-defining features; results vary; credits, accounts and unclear training policies are common. |
| Traditional filter | Fast, predictable and often usable without registration; manual adjustments may be available. | Less polished, less realistic and sometimes limited by advertisements or low-resolution exports. |
| Avatar builder | No selfie upload; precise choices for hair, clothing, face shape and accessories. | Does not preserve your real likeness automatically and takes longer to assemble. |
| Manual editor | Maximum control over composition, text, backgrounds and effects. | Requires more skill and time than a one-click conversion. |
Privacy, children’s photos and commercial use
Most upload-based services send the image to a remote server. Before uploading, read the current privacy policy for retention, deletion, account linkage and model-training language. Media.io’s seven-day deletion statement is useful, but it remains a vendor claim rather than a privacy audit. Do not upload identity documents, confidential workplace images, addresses, badges or children’s photos unless you are comfortable with the service’s terms.
A cartoon image may still be subject to the tool’s license, stock assets, fonts or style restrictions. Check commercial-use terms before putting the result on merchandise, advertising, client work or a paid product. Avoid asking for an exact living-artist imitation or promising an official Disney, Pixar or Simpsons result; describe the look neutrally, such as “bold comic,” “soft watercolor” or “3D animated.”
When a paid plan is worth considering
Pay only for a concrete benefit: a watermark-free or larger export, premium styles, more credits, batch processing or a design workflow. BeFunky Plus is relevant for its Plus-only Cartoonizer effects; Fotor may suit readers who need broader AI styles; Media.io is more compelling when image and video tools are both useful; Canva and Picsart make sense when the portrait must become a finished social or marketing graphic. For one profile picture, a free tool is usually sufficient if its download is usable.
