The best LightBurn setting is not a universal speed-and-power number. It is the fastest combination that achieves your target finish on your specific laser and the exact material in front of you. Start with your machine maker’s guidance, test on spare stock, compare results against the job’s purpose, and save the winner for next time.

Why “best” settings change every time

Laser type, lens and focus, controller, material composition, thickness, surface coating, and the desired result all affect the outcome. LightBurn’s own guidance says settings must be retested when the material changes; a setting that works on one sheet, batch, or machine is not a guarantee for another. See the LightBurn First Material Test guide and Cut Settings guide.

  • 【Software & System Compatibility】Fully compatible with LaserGRBL (Windows XP/7/8/10) and LightBurn (Windows, macOS, and Linux). Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced creator, you’ll find intuitive controls and powerful tools to bring your ideas to life.

Use the manufacturer’s recommendations as a starting point, then follow the machine’s focusing procedure. The procedure differs among GCode diode, DSP CO2, and Galvo systems, so do not treat focus as a one-size-fits-all step.

A repeatable LightBurn testing workflow

  1. Prepare matching test stock. Put a spare piece of the material you intend to use in the work area. Repeat the test for a different material, thickness, or substantially different batch. For cut tests, place a heat-safe sacrificial surface underneath so the workbench is protected.
  2. Open the test tool. In LightBurn, choose Laser Tools → Material Test. Select a suitable preset if one exists, or define a grid and the variables you want to compare. The standard test varies two parameters; device-dependent options can include speed, power, line interval, passes, frequency, or Q-Pulse. The Material Test reference explains the available controls.
  3. Verify units and dimensions. Confirm that speed is expressed in mm/s or mm/min before entering or copying a value. The same number in the wrong unit can produce unexpectedly weak output or dangerously aggressive burning. Check that the grid fits entirely on the spare stock.
  4. Preview and frame. Preview the planned output, then use Frame to verify its position on the material. Framing catches placement errors before the laser fires.
  5. Run under supervision. Start the test only after following your machine maker’s safety requirements. Watch the job continuously, particularly with flammable materials, and keep a practical way to stop the machine. LightBurn specifically warns against leaving tests or other jobs unattended.
  6. Inspect, select, and record. Choose the cell that meets the intended quality target, not simply the darkest or fastest-looking cell. Write down the material, thickness, laser, lens or focus condition, units, and the selected settings.

How to judge the grid

Evaluate the test by the result you need. Speed is an efficiency measure only after quality is acceptable.

Job Primary pass/fail question Surface details to inspect Efficiency decision
Engraving Is the mark the required darkness and depth? Look for clean edges, unwanted soot or charring, and scan lines that overlap too much or leave visible gaps. Among cells that meet the visual and depth target, prefer the faster option or the one using fewer passes if the finish remains consistent.
Cutting Does the beam pass completely through the stock? Check the underside and edges for incomplete separation, excessive char, soot, or overburn. Compare speed only among cells that cut through reliably and leave an acceptable edge.

These are evaluation criteria, not guaranteed machine-to-machine results. Inspect the actual test piece and judge it against the intended project finish.

Choosing the variables that matter

Speed and power

Speed and power jointly influence engraving darkness or depth and cutting ability. Increasing power or slowing movement generally increases delivered energy, but the useful range depends on the laser and stock. Do not copy an example value without matching the machine, material, and units.

Line interval for filled engraving

Filled areas depend on line interval as well as speed and power. Lines that are too close can overlap and overburn; lines that are too far apart can leave a light, visibly striped image. Test interval when the fill quality matters, rather than adjusting speed and power alone.

Passes, frequency, and Q-Pulse

Depending on the device, Material Test can vary passes, frequency, or Q-Pulse in addition to speed and power. Include these only when your controller and laser expose the setting; otherwise they are not meaningful comparison axes.

Air assist

Air assist can reduce soot and charring and help with cutting, but software control matters only when the laser and controller support it. Some machines have no controllable assist or require it to be switched on manually. Confirm the hardware and control method before treating air-assist state as a LightBurn variable; the shared-settings documentation describes device-dependent behavior at LightBurn Shared Settings.

Useful tests beyond Material Test

The Laser Tools menu also includes Interval Test and Focus Test, among other device-dependent tools. A Focus Test requires a machine with a controllable Z axis. Use these tests when the question is focus or spacing rather than a broad speed-and-power comparison. The menu is documented at Laser Tools Menu.

Save the result so the work is repeatable

Once a test cell meets the quality target, save the settings as a preset or add them to LightBurn’s Material Library. Name entries by material, thickness, operation, and any important condition such as air-assist state. This creates a useful starting point for future jobs without pretending that a saved value is permanent: recheck it when the material, machine, focus, or desired finish changes. LightBurn’s job-optimization documentation covers reuse and saved settings at Job Time Optimization.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you matched the test stock to the production material and thickness?
  • Did you follow the correct focus method for your laser type?
  • Are speed units confirmed as mm/s or mm/min?
  • Does the test fit safely on the stock, with protection beneath a cut test?
  • Did you preview and frame before firing?
  • Were you present for the entire job?
  • Does the selected cell satisfy the actual engraving or cutting goal?
  • Have you recorded or saved the settings with the material and operation clearly identified?

For a concise starting principle, LightBurn notes that proper settings differ between materials and should be tested again when the material changes. Treat every new combination as a small, controlled experiment: vary defined parameters, inspect the result you actually need, then preserve the successful settings for the next job.
