Shenzhen Zhongshuge is a bookstore in Shenzhen’s Qianhai economic zone whose defining bookshelf is a giant spiral staircase turned on its side. The structure stretches from the entrance toward the exit, combining book display, circulation, and architectural symbolism in one sweeping installation.
What bookstore has a spiral staircase laid sideways?
That bookstore is Shenzhen Zhongshuge. Designed by the Chinese firm X+Living, its central feature is a sideways spiral staircase that operates as a functional bookshelf as well as an artwork. Rather than rising between floors, the spiral extends horizontally through the store, guiding visitors along the main route from entry to exit.
New Atlas reported the project in November 2021, after the store was completed earlier that month. The report gives the bookstore an area of 1,300 square metres, or about 14,000 square feet.
Where is Shenzhen Zhongshuge?
The store is located in Shenzhen’s Qianhai economic zone. The reported project includes a glass facade, a children’s reading area, and rooms that can host forums and conferences. The available 2021 reporting does not establish current opening hours, admission rules, accessibility arrangements, or whether the store is still operating in the same form.

How the sideways spiral works
A bookshelf along the visitor route
The installation occupies the visual and physical centre of the bookstore. Its repeated shelves create a long display surface while the spiral shape gives the room a strong sense of movement. The result is less a conventional shelving wall than a piece of retail architecture that organizes how visitors see and traverse the store.
A table through the centre
A shiny display table cuts across the centre of the spiral. X+Living described this element as a sign of the passage of time, adding another horizontal line to the structure’s looping form.

Clock imagery from the handrails
From a particular viewing angle, the handrails can suggest the hands of a clock, while the wider installation evokes a clock dial. This visual effect reinforces the store’s emphasis on time, accumulation, and historical continuity.
What does the staircase represent?
X+Living frames the design as a historical ladder built over countless hours. In the explanation quoted by New Atlas, the installation is “a ladder of history that has been built up over countless hours, conveying the sense that history is being pushed through time at a rapid pace.” The sideways orientation turns that metaphor into a journey across the store rather than a climb upward.
New Atlas also says the concept was partly inspired by the observation “books are the ladder of human progress,” attributed in that report to Russian writer Maxim Gorky. That attribution is reported by New Atlas; the original wording and a primary source for the quotation were not independently established in the available material.
A bookstore, not a standalone art installation
The spiral is the project’s principal symbolic gesture, but Shenzhen Zhongshuge remains a retail bookstore. Its significance comes from the overlap between use and metaphor: shelving holds the store’s merchandise, the route supports browsing, and the form gives physical shape to ideas about reading, history, and time.

Other spaces inside the project
- Children’s reading area: a dedicated space for younger readers is among the features reported for the store.
- Forum and conference spaces: the project includes areas intended for talks and gatherings.
- Glass facade: the transparent exterior contributes to the store’s open, highly visible presentation.
X+Living’s immersive bookstore approach
New Atlas places Shenzhen Zhongshuge alongside earlier bookstore projects by X+Living in Ningbo and Chongqing. Those projects provide context for the firm’s use of immersive interiors, but the sideways spiral is specific to the Shenzhen store and is the clearest expression here of books as a metaphor for accumulated knowledge and historical progress.
