A textile fiber is the basic material element used to make textile products. Fibers may be natural, such as cotton and wool, or manufactured, such as polyester and nylon. Fibers can be spun into yarn or made into fabric by bonding or interlacing.

What is a textile fiber?

In the United States, the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act defines a fiber as a unit of matter that can be spun into yarn or made into fabric by bonding or interlacing. The law calls it “the basic structural element of textile products.” Its methods for forming fabric include weaving, knitting, braiding, felting, twisting, and webbing. 15 U.S.C. § 70

How are fiber, yarn, and fabric different?

These terms describe different levels of textile structure. Fiber is the basic material; yarn is a strand made from textile fiber and suitable for making fabric; fabric is material made by weaving, knitting, felting, or other methods from fiber, yarn, or their combination. The statutory definitions distinguish them this way.

What are natural and manufactured fibers?

The distinction is about origin and production, not a ranking of quality. Under US law, a natural fiber exists as a fiber in its natural state. A manufactured fiber is produced through a process from a substance that is not a fiber at some point in that process. 15 U.S.C. § 70

Natural fibers

Cotton and wool are familiar natural-fiber examples. Natural fibers may be grouped by origin into animal, vegetable, and mineral categories. ISO 6938:2012 sets generic names and definitions for important natural fibers according to their constitution or origin; ISO says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current. ISO 6938:2012

Manufactured fibers

Polyester, nylon, acrylic, olefin, urethane, and polyvinyl are examples of manufactured fibers. Rayon and acetate are cellulose-based manufactured fibers. NIST’s manufactured-fiber lexicon lists these examples.

How should you compare textile fibers?

Start by identifying what a fiber name tells you: its origin or production route, its family, and its generic or standardized name. For technical identification, classification may also include details such as biological or botanical name, geographic source, and major component. ASTM D7641-21 is an active guide covering textile-fiber groups and classification terminology. ASTM D7641-21

A fiber name alone does not establish how a finished textile will feel, wear, or perform. Classification systems identify and organize fibers; they do not provide a universal ranking for comfort, durability, environmental impact, or suitability. For a practical choice, compare specific properties and construction details relevant to the intended use.
