To sew continuous binding with neat mitered corners, use 2-1/2-inch double-fold binding, stop stitching one seam-allowance distance before each corner, fold the strip up into a right angle, then fold it back down before sewing the next side. Rolling the finished binding to the quilt’s back creates the matching rear miter.

What Video 20 demonstrates

American Patchwork & Quilting’s Video 20, published October 13, 2016, shows how to sew continuous quilt binding and form miters on both the front and back of a quilt. The presenter describes the challenge plainly: “Mitering binding corners can be a little bit tricky if you don’t understand what to do when you reach the corner. Let me show you how.”

The lesson uses a 2-1/2-inch strip folded in half for double-fold binding. It uses a generous 1/4-inch seam allowance, slightly shy of 3/8 inch. The exact allowance you choose matters because it determines how far before every corner you stop.

Materials and setup

  • 2-1/2-inch-wide binding strips for double-fold binding
  • A quilt with its edges prepared for binding
  • Sewing machine, thread, iron and pressing surface
  • A consistent seam allowance guide

Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise and press it before sewing. Keep the folded edge toward the outside of the quilt and the two raw edges aligned with the quilt’s raw edge.

How to sew continuous binding with mitered corners

  1. Choose and maintain the seam allowance. The demonstration uses a generous 1/4-inch seam, just under 3/8 inch. Use that same measurement at every corner.
  2. Align the binding. Place the binding’s raw edges against the quilt edge. Begin sewing according to your preferred starting and joining method, keeping the folded strip flat and the seam consistent.
  3. Stop before the corner. Sew until you are exactly one seam-allowance distance from the approaching corner. For a 1/4-inch allowance, stop 1/4 inch before the edge.
  4. Pause without cutting the thread. Lift the needle and presser foot. Leaving the thread connected allows the binding to turn continuously around the quilt.
  5. Make the upward fold. Lift the binding strip straight upward so it forms a right angle with the side you have just sewn. Finger-press the diagonal fold from the corner of the quilt toward the raised strip.
  6. Fold the strip back down. Bring the binding back over the next quilt edge. Its raw edges should again line up with the quilt’s raw edge, ready for the next seam.
  7. Repeat on every corner. Sew the next side, stop the same seam-allowance distance before the corner, and repeat the right-angle lift and fold-down movement.
  8. Join the continuous strip. After the final side, finish the binding connection using your chosen continuous-binding join, then press the seam so it lies flat.

How to miter quilt binding corners on the back

After the binding is sewn to the quilt’s front, roll it over the edge to the back. The folded binding should cover the original stitching line. At each corner, ease the fold with your fingers so the back section forms a clean diagonal that matches the front miter.

Secure the back binding with your chosen finishing method, checking each corner as you work. The front and back miters depend on the same initial corner fold; careful alignment while rolling the binding prevents a bulky or twisted corner.

How far before the corner should I stop sewing binding?

Stop one seam-allowance distance before the corner. With the video’s generous 1/4-inch allowance, stop 1/4 inch before the corner; if you use a different allowance, measure that same distance instead. Stopping at the correct point leaves the space needed for the upward right-angle fold and the next straight seam.

Technique choices the video does and does not compare

Choice Video 20 Other option
Binding construction 2-1/2-inch strip folded in half; double-fold Single-fold binding is not covered
Seam allowance Generous 1/4 inch, slightly shy of 3/8 inch No alternative allowance is tested
Corner turn Lift into a right angle, finger-press the diagonal, fold down No competing corner method is evaluated
Back finishing Roll binding over to cover the original stitching line and form the rear miter The tutorial does not compare machine and hand back-stitching results

These distinctions are useful when adapting the lesson: changing the binding width, fold style or finishing method also changes how much fabric you manipulate at a corner. The tutorial itself demonstrates only the double-fold, 2-1/2-inch approach.

Troubleshooting mitered corners

The corner looks rounded

Check that you stopped one full seam-allowance distance before the edge. A stop that is too close leaves insufficient room for the diagonal fold.

The next side has misaligned raw edges

After lifting the strip into a right angle, fold it back down before restarting. Reposition the binding until both raw edges sit evenly on the next quilt edge.

The back miter is bulky or points the wrong way

Roll the binding over the edge without twisting it, then manipulate the folded corner so the diagonal lies in the same direction as the front miter. Pressing the initial binding fold and finger-pressing each turn helps control the layers.

Position the needle to fix the pulled cloth strip on the ironing plate. When you are pulling the bias tape, let the iron be close to the head part of the bias tape, which can make the pulled cloth strip be shaped immediately.

Key takeaway

Continuous binding corners become repeatable when the stopping distance and fold sequence stay consistent: stop at the seam-allowance mark, lift the strip into a right angle, fold it back down with raw edges aligned, and roll the finished binding to the back for the matching miter.
