Acrylic craft paint is the best all-purpose choice for painting a pumpkin. Use a smooth real or faux pumpkin, wash and dry the skin, apply the acrylic with a foam brush, then add details with a small brush or paint marker. Let each layer dry completely; use a compatible clear sealer for outdoor displays or pumpkins that will be handled often.
What you need
- One smooth real pumpkin or faux pumpkin
- Acrylic craft paint
- Foam brush for the base coat
- Small synthetic brushes for details
- Optional enamel or paint markers
- Drop cloth or newspaper
- Optional painter’s tape and gloves
- Optional compatible clear craft sealer or varnish
Home Depot Canada’s beginner project list also includes spray paint and chalk paint. Choose those only when their finish and surface compatibility suit your project. Keep spray products away from children and follow the label; ventilate when using aerosol sealers.
Choose the pumpkin and finish first
Real or faux
A real pumpkin gives you a seasonal, organic display. A faux pumpkin is reusable and is the better option for repeat projects, chalkboard finishes, or designs you want to keep from year to year.

Brushes or markers
Brushes cover broad areas and allow color blending. Markers make outlines, lettering and small details easier. You can combine both: paint the base with a foam brush, then use a detail brush or marker for the design.
Indoor or outdoor
Indoor displays are gentler on water-based paint. Outdoor pumpkins need thorough drying and a compatible clear sealer because moisture can make water-based products run or wash off.

Standard or chalkboard surface
Standard acrylic creates a conventional decorative finish. For a writable faux pumpkin, Crayola’s method mixes acrylic paint with baking soda and water, applies two coats, and allows 1–2 hours of drying per coat before chalk is used.
How to paint a pumpkin
- Protect the work area. Set the pumpkin on newspaper or a drop cloth. Use painter’s tape where you want a sharply defined edge.
- Clean the skin. Remove dirt with water, then let the pumpkin dry fully. Test unfamiliar paint on a hidden area before committing to the design. Testors’ project guidance specifically calls for a clean, dry pumpkin.
- Apply the base coat. Use a foam or craft brush to spread a thin, even layer of acrylic paint. Testors allows approximately 30 minutes for this coat to dry. Add another thin coat if the pumpkin’s color still shows through, allowing the surface to dry between coats.
- Add the design. Paint the face, pattern or stripes with a smaller synthetic brush, or use acrylic-compatible enamel or paint markers for lines and lettering. Let the details dry before moving the pumpkin; Testors specifies at least 30 minutes after detailing.
- Seal when appropriate. Once all paint is dry, apply a compatible clear craft sealer or varnish if the pumpkin will be outdoors or handled frequently. Follow that product’s recoat and ventilation directions rather than guessing at a drying time.
Home Depot Canada gives a beginner pumpkin-painting project an estimated total time of about two hours; the actual time varies with the number of coats, design complexity and drying conditions.

How to make a chalkboard pumpkin
This finish is intended for a faux pumpkin. Mix acrylic paint with baking soda and water as directed in Crayola’s craft method, brush on the first coat, and let it dry for 1–2 hours. Apply the second coat and allow another 1–2 hours before writing with chalk. Test the mixture on an inconspicuous area first, since coverage and adhesion vary by the pumpkin’s material.
How to keep paint from peeling or running
- Start with a smooth skin and remove all dirt.
- Do not paint while the surface is damp.
- Use thin coats instead of one heavy coat.
- Respect the drying interval before adding details or handling the pumpkin.
- Use a sealer labeled as compatible with both the paint and the pumpkin surface for outdoor or high-touch displays.
- Keep a water-based painted pumpkin out of rain and standing moisture unless its fully cured finish is specifically rated for those conditions.
If the paint will not adhere
Stop and let the pumpkin dry, then test the paint on a hidden spot. A dirty, wet, unusually glossy or incompatible surface can cause poor adhesion. On a faux pumpkin, use products intended for that material and follow the paint manufacturer’s preparation instructions.

If the colors run
Moisture can make water-based products run or wash off. Move the pumpkin indoors, let it dry, and protect future outdoor pieces with a compatible clear sealer. Do not apply sealer over wet paint.

Safety, food use and care
Crayola states that pumpkins decorated with its products are not meant for consumption because its art materials are not food-grade. Treat any pumpkin painted with craft paint, markers, chalk mixtures or sealer as decorative only; do not eat it afterward. Keep paints, solvents and spray products away from children, use gloves when appropriate, and follow every product label.

For the longest-lasting display, keep the finished pumpkin in a dry location, avoid unnecessary handling, and inspect the coating after exposure to weather. A sealer can extend the life of a design, but its performance depends on the specific paint, surface and environmental conditions.
