You can make a memorable jack-o’-lantern without an elaborate pattern. Start with a dry, stable work area, let an adult handle every cut, and choose one of five approaches: change a classic face, arrange geometric openings, cut a connected silhouette, carve translucent layers, or decorate a pumpkin without cutting it at all. Battery-operated lights make the finished decoration safer to display indoors or outdoors.
Five pumpkin decoration ideas
These options range from fully cut designs to child-friendly no-carve projects. Trace any design on the pumpkin before cutting, and smooth the inside back wall if possible; the flatter surface reflects more light through the openings (Reynolds Brands, 2022).
1. Give a classic face a new expression
Begin with the familiar eyes-and-mouth format, then alter one feature: use round, sleepy or uneven eyes; add angled eyebrows; make a tiny grin, a toothy smile or a surprised oval mouth. Draw the complete face first so the features stay proportionate, then cut along the traced lines. This is an approachable first carving because each feature is separate and mistakes are easier to contain.

2. Build a geometric lantern
Repeat triangles, diamonds, stars or narrow bands around the pumpkin for a clean, modern pattern. Keep shapes large enough to cut safely and leave solid strips between neighboring openings so the shell remains strong. A repeating band can wrap around the middle, while a cluster of stars works well on one side.
3. Cut a connected silhouette scene
Choose one simple outline—a cat, bat, ghost or small house—and transfer it as a single connected shape. The uncut pumpkin becomes the background, so a bold outline reads clearly after dark. Avoid thin, isolated parts that could break away; simplify the subject until every section is joined to the surrounding shell.

4. Create a layered, glowing design
For depth without fully removing every section, scrape selected areas of the inner wall thinner. Light passes through the scraped rind as a soft glow, while fully cut openings remain brighter and sharper. Use shallow marks for highlights and deeper scraping for broad illuminated areas. This technique needs more control than a basic cutout because you must stop before piercing the shell.
5. Decorate a pumpkin without carving it
Children can draw faces, paint patterns or apply stickers while an adult manages any cutting elsewhere. Paint a character, add a row of paper shapes, or combine stickers with a drawn expression. The pumpkin can remain whole, eliminating knife work and making this the simplest option for young children.

How to carve a pumpkin safely
Pumpkin carving causes a significant share of Halloween injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated an annual average of 3,200 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments during the three years it reviewed; 55% involved pumpkin carving (CPSC, 2022).

- Prepare the station. Work on a clean, dry, well-lit surface. Dry your hands, the pumpkin, tools and cutting area; moisture can make them slip (Ohio State University Extension, 2022; British Society for Surgery of the Hand, 2021; American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2021).
- Plan and trace. Draw or attach the design before opening the pumpkin. Keep the pattern simple, with solid bridges between sections.
- Use the right tool. A pumpkin-carving kit or small serrated pumpkin saw is preferable. A larger, sharper kitchen knife can wedge in the rind and require extra force to remove (BSSH, 2021; AAOS, 2021).
- Let an adult make every cut. CPSC’s guidance is direct: “Leave pumpkin carving to the adults” (CPSC, 2022). Children can draw, scoop pulp and seeds, paint, or place stickers (CPSC, 2022; BSSH, 2021).
- Cut with controlled strokes. Keep the cutting hand moving away from your body and your other hand. Use small strokes rather than forcing the blade through; BSSH advises cutting away from yourself and away from your other hand (BSSH, 2021).
- Finish the interior. Remove loose pulp and seeds. Smoothing the inside back wall can improve reflected light (Reynolds Brands, 2022).
Safe ways to light the finished decoration
Battery-operated lights
Battery-operated LED tea lights are the simplest choice: they provide a candle-like glow without an open flame. Glow sticks are another flame-free option. Reynolds Brands recommends placing electric tea lights inside finished jack-o’-lanterns (2022).
If you use a candle
Keep the flame away from curtains and other combustible decorations, set the pumpkin where it cannot be knocked over, and never leave it unattended. CPSC recommends battery-operated lights or glow sticks as safer alternatives (CPSC, 2022).

What children can do besides carving
- Draw the face or trace a stencil.
- Scoop out pulp and separate seeds with adult supervision.
- Paint the outside with a face, pattern or scene.
- Apply stickers or other non-cut decorations.
- Choose the light and help position the finished pumpkin away from flammable materials.
For very young children, use the no-carve approach and keep all sharp tools with an adult.
