Scrappy Celebration was American Patchwork & Quilting’s 2023 quilt-along for a Lissa Alexander quilt. The project finished at 63-1/2 × 72-1/2 inches and was designed to turn a varied fabric stash into a coordinated, colorful quilt. The published sew-along ran from February 20 through April 16, 2023, with a suggested weekly pace; you can also sew it on your own schedule.
What the Scrappy Celebration quilt-along includes
The pattern appeared in the April 2023 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting, with digital and printed purchase options offered by the publisher. Moda’s retailer description characterizes the design as “a variety of easy blocks made with squares and rectangles,” so the main challenge is organizing color and cutting accurately rather than mastering complex techniques.
The quilt-along’s purpose was summed up by AllPeopleQuilt as “Throw a party with your stash!” Assorted prints create the scrappy effect, while grouped color families keep the finished quilt visually balanced.

Finished size and material list
The finished quilt measures 63-1/2 × 72-1/2 inches. The following quantities are the published requirements; “assorted” means you can combine multiple prints within that color group rather than buying one continuous fabric.

The backing and batting dimensions are larger than the quilt top so the layers can be basted and quilted without running short at the edges. Choose backing fabric wide enough for your preferred layout, or plan seams according to the pattern’s instructions.

How the construction works
Block style
Blocks use squares and rectangles, making the project approachable for confident beginners who are comfortable with rotary cutting, an accurate quarter-inch seam and chain piecing. Because many pieces are small and the design is scrappy, consistent cutting and pressing matter more than matching every print.
Color organization
Sort your fabrics into the seven listed families before cutting: pink, white, red/dark pink, green, orange, blue and yellow. Include a range of values and print scales in each group. Keep enough light and white-print fabric to preserve contrast with the stronger colors.

Suggested pace
The official event ran February 20–April 16, 2023. Its weekly schedule was a recommendation, not a requirement. If you are starting later, divide the pattern into cutting, block-making, assembly and finishing sessions, and stop after each stage to check that the color distribution still feels even.
Using scraps or buying a bundle

Sew Lux presented a 20-print assorted bundle as a starter option for this sew-along. Treat that as a color-and-print starting point, not as proof that one bundle covers every requirement. Check the cuttable yardage and add fabric until each quantity in the table is met.

Planning, cutting and assembly checklist
- Inventory fabric. Measure usable yardage, remove damaged sections and group prints by the seven color families.
- Confirm contrast. Set aside light white prints and compare them with the pinks, reds and other saturated fabrics before cutting.
- Obtain the complete pattern. Use the April 2023 issue’s instructions, whether in the printed issue or its digital edition.
- Cut carefully. Label pieces by color and block, and verify ruler alignment frequently; small errors accumulate when many squares and rectangles are joined.
- Piece the blocks. Follow the pattern’s pressing directions and keep completed units organized so similar colors do not cluster unintentionally.
- Arrange the quilt top. Lay out all blocks before sewing rows together. Move pieces to distribute dark and light values across the design.
- Finish the quilt. Layer the 72 × 81-inch batting, 4-yard backing and completed top, then quilt and bind with the orange-and-white print.
Can you audition fabrics in EQ8?
Yes. The 2023 quilt-along offered an EQ8 bonus download for digital fabric auditioning. That lets you test color placement on screen before cutting, but it is optional; paper pattern instructions are sufficient to make the quilt. The event’s podcast page also recorded a 25% Electric Quilt purchase discount for participants. Both the bonus and discount were tied to the 2023 event, so do not assume they remain available or that current terms are unchanged.

- Have the current pattern instructions from the April 2023 issue or its digital equivalent.
- Confirm that your assorted prints add up to every listed color-family quantity.
- Reserve the full 4 yards for backing and obtain batting at least 72 × 81 inches.
- Check that your bundle contains quilting cottons and enough usable variety; add individual yardage where it falls short.
- Plan cutting space and a labeling system before beginning the many small units.
