What Is a Leader/Ender Quilt? A Practical Guide to Sewing Two Quilts at Once

A leader/ender quilt grows from the scraps sewn before and after seams in your main chain-piecing project. Here is how the technique works and how to start one.

A leader/ender quilt is a secondary quilt assembled from small fabric units sewn before and after the seams of your main chain-piecing project. The extra pieces keep fabric under the presser foot, reducing thread nests, needle unthreading and fabric being pulled into the needle hole. Instead of cutting away those leaders and enders, you save the units and gradually build another quilt.

How leaders and enders work

A leader is the scrap or unit you place under the needle before sewing your real seam. An ender is the piece sewn immediately after that seam. American Patchwork & Quilting defines them as fabric scraps used during chain piecing to eliminate thread nests, keep fabric from being drawn into the needle hole, conserve thread and prevent the needle from becoming unthreaded when a new seam starts.

  1. Place a leader under the presser foot and sew a few stitches.
  2. Feed the next pair of pieces for your primary quilt without cutting the thread between them.
  3. At the end of that chain, place a leader/ender unit under the foot and sew its seam. That unit is now the ender.
  4. Leave the ender under the needle, raise the presser foot and trim the thread behind it.
  5. When you start the next chain, the waiting ender functions as the first leader. Continue alternating your main project and the secondary units.

For a simple version, align two same-sized pieces right sides together and sew a consistent 1/4-inch seam. Repeated pairs can later be combined into four-patches, rail sections or other blocks.

Why make a second quilt this way?

  • Useful sewing time: the secondary quilt grows during pauses between seams on the primary project.
  • Less thread waste: fewer long thread tails are cut from the machine.
  • A tidier machine start: a scrap helps prevent nests and unthreading when beginning a chain.
  • Scrap reduction: small, usable pieces become planned units rather than an unorganized pile.
  • Flexible progress: you can work on the leader/ender quilt for months without interrupting the main project.

The method is easiest when the secondary design uses repeatable squares or rectangles. Keep a small, sorted batch beside the machine so each unit is ready when you finish a seam.

Choosing a beginner-friendly design

Select a pattern whose units are simple enough to sew accurately in brief intervals. The main decisions are unit shape and size, color control and whether you are following a published pattern or improvising.

Design approach Typical units Color planning Best use
Checkerboard Equal squares joined into four-patches Fully scrappy or separated into light and dark piles First leader/ender project and steady chain piecing
Four-patch Pairs of squares combined into four-square blocks Controlled contrast or random scraps Using a consistent two-color relationship
Rail-fence Strips or rectangles joined into rail sections Organized strips, neutrals and accents Making larger blocks from repeated sections
Improvised scrap block Repeatable rectangles or squares of your own dimensions Flexible, but requires a clear seam allowance and trimming plan Using an irregular stash without committing to a fixed pattern

Separate pieces into lights, darks, neutrals or a background fabric if you want visual control. A completely scrappy approach is also valid, provided the units share the dimensions required by the block.

A concrete example: Checkerboard Rails

Bonnie K. Hunter’s official Checkerboard Rails project uses 1 1/2-inch squares and 1 1/2-by-6 1/2-inch rectangles. Pairs are sewn as leader/ender units, combined into four-patches, and joined to rail sections. The pattern states that blocks measure 6 1/2 inches unfinished and finish at 6 inches in the quilt.

Because the cutting sizes are fixed, you can prepare a modest stack of squares and rectangles, sew one pair whenever you finish a seam on another quilt, and assemble the four-patches after enough pairs accumulate. Pressing and trimming as you go keeps the small units accurate.

Beginner setup and workflow

  1. Choose the secondary pattern. Start with squares or rectangles and confirm its required cut and finished sizes.
  2. Cut a small batch. Make matching units first; expand the batch only after you are comfortable with the process.
  3. Sort the pieces. Use labeled stacks, trays or a bin for each color group and block component.
  4. Place the first pair. Sew it at the beginning or end of a chain from your primary project, using the pattern’s seam allowance (commonly 1/4 inch).
  5. Save the ender. Leave it under the needle, snip the thread behind the presser foot and begin the next chain with that piece.
  6. Press and combine. Press the accumulating pairs, then join them into larger units according to the pattern.
  7. Square up and assemble. Trim units to the required size before joining blocks and completing the quilt.

What to keep beside the sewing machine

  • Pre-cut pairs or units in a shallow tray or small bin
  • A separate container for completed pairs awaiting pressing
  • The pattern’s cutting and unfinished-size measurements
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat for accurate trimming
  • Pressing supplies close enough to process units regularly
  • Labels or color dividers if the design uses lights, darks, neutrals or a background

Keep the active unit pile away from the feed dogs and needle area, and check that no loose threads or pins are caught in the next pair.

Common problems and fixes

The machine makes a thread nest at the start

Use a leader before the first project seam and begin with the needle down. Verify that the scrap fully covers the needle-plate opening before feeding the next pieces.

The needle unthreads between chains

Leave the ender under the presser foot instead of pulling the thread out after every seam. Trim behind the foot, then start the next chain with that piece.

Small units finish undersized

Check the seam allowance, pressing direction and cutting dimensions. Sew a test pair, measure it, and adjust before cutting a large batch.

The design looks too random

Sort scraps into defined groups or reserve a single background fabric. Controlled placement can give a scrappy quilt a repeatable pattern without eliminating variety.

Pieces accumulate faster than they can be assembled

Set a storage limit and periodically press, trim and combine the units. A leader/ender project should remain manageable alongside the primary quilt.

Books and project resources

Bonnie K. Hunter’s Adventures with Leaders & Enders (Kansas City Star Quilts, 2010) is a 96-page instructional book devoted to the method. Her 2014 sequel, More Adventures with Leaders and Enders (also 96 pages), includes 12 additional scrap-quilt projects. These books are useful when you want published cutting plans rather than designing a secondary quilt from scratch.

The technique itself does not require a special machine, thread or fabric brand. Accurate cutting, a consistent seam allowance and a small prepared supply of units are the essentials.
