Ive and Newson bring old-school charm to Ferrari’s first EV interior

Ferrari’s first electric production car uses layered OLED gauges, real switches, machined aluminum and a ceremonial key sequence instead of a screen-only cockpit.

Ferrari’s Luce is the company’s first fully electric production car, but its cabin intentionally avoids the usual screen-dominated EV formula. Jony Ive and Marc Newson’s LoveFrom studio combine OLED displays with machined aluminum, switches, rotary controls, physical needles and a ceremonial start sequence that make the interface feel tangible and unmistakably Ferrari.

What the Ferrari Luce is—and when this interior appeared

The Luce is a four-door, five-seat electric grand tourer. LoveFrom worked with Ferrari on the exterior, interior and interaction design. LoveFrom’s archive records the interior and interface presentation on 9 February 2026; Ferrari presented the complete vehicle in May 2026.

Luce is Ferrari’s first fully electric production vehicle. That distinguishes it from an electrified Ferrari with an internal-combustion engine: this car is built around a dedicated battery-electric architecture.

Bburago Ferrari Race and Play LaFerrari 1/24 Scale Diecast Model Vehicle Red
  • 1/24 scale model
  • Diecast metal body with plastic parts
  • Packaging: Original factory window retail box
  • 1/24 scale diecast car with metal body and plastic parts, opening engine compartment and full function steering by Bburago.
  • Full function steering

The interior is described as lounge-like, yet the driver’s environment is deliberately mechanical in character. Instead of hiding every function behind a single slab of glass, the dashboard treats controls as individual objects with their own shape, finish and tactile response.

Why the cabin feels “old-school”

The historical quality comes from physicality rather than from using obsolete technology. LoveFrom describes a continuous dashboard with distinct physical controls, placing switches, rotary controls and carefully machined metal alongside digital displays.

  • Physical buttons and rocker switches handle functions that are often reduced to capacitive surfaces.
  • Brushed and machined aluminum supplies a cool, precise material contrast to leather and glass.
  • Clear round gauges and a real needle recall Ferrari cabins from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
  • Each control is designed to be located and operated by touch, rather than selected from a flat menu.

Ars Technica’s 9 February 2026 report characterizes the approach as a departure from Ferrari’s recent models. The result is not a rejection of digital technology; it is a digital system presented through physical forms.

OLED instruments designed to look like analog gauges

The instrument binnacle uses two overlapping OLED screens. The rear layer renders analog-style dials through cutouts, while the forward layer and aluminum rings create visual depth. A physical speedometer needle sits between the layers, so the most familiar part of the display is an actual object rather than a graphic animation.

This layered construction gives the screens parallax and shadow, making the digital instruments read like assembled gauges. MotorTrend identifies the lettering as the “LoveFrom Maranello” typeface, drawing on vintage Veglia and Jaeger instruments from the 1950s and 1960s. The historical reference therefore extends beyond color and shape to the typography itself.

A Nardi-inspired steering wheel with tactile manettino controls

The steering wheel reinterprets the classic Nardi three-spoke form. MotorTrend reports milled billet-aluminum spokes, leather wrapping, aluminum turn-signal buttons and manettino pods whose knobs and indicator pointers use different shapes to help distinguish them by touch.

Ars Technica describes the wheel as CNC-milled from recycled aluminum and reports that it weighs 400 grams less than Ferrari’s usual steering wheel. That figure is a reported comparison with Ferrari’s standard wheel, not a general weight claim for every Luce configuration.

The design puts frequently used driving controls on recognizable hardware instead of requiring the driver to search a touchscreen. Its references are historical, but the intent is practical: a driver can identify the control from its form and position.

The central screen still moves—and the start remains a ritual

A display that can face either occupant

The central infotainment display swivels on a pivot or ball joint. It can be angled toward the driver or passenger, making the screen a shared interface rather than a permanently driver-facing panel.

MotorTrend reports aluminum toggles on the display assembly for seat heating and cooling and for climate temperature. Those toggles preserve the same metal-and-motion language used elsewhere in the cockpit.

A key that activates the shifter

MotorTrend describes a rectangular Ferrari key made from glass and aluminum with an e-ink display. Pressing it into its receiver starts a visual sequence: the key’s yellow color appears to flow into the illuminated glass shifter. The operation is intentionally ceremonial, turning startup into a physical handoff between object, light and control.

What LoveFrom and Marc Newson designed for Ferrari

The collaboration covers more than the dashboard. LoveFrom’s role spans the vehicle’s exterior, interior and interaction design, while the Luce presentation shows how those disciplines are coordinated inside the cabin.

How the Luce differs from screen-first EV interiors

Design axis Ferrari Luce approach What that means in use
Primary controls Switches, rocker controls, rotary elements and tactile manettino pods remain visible. Important functions can be located by shape and position instead of only by an on-screen menu.
Instrument feedback OLED graphics are layered behind aluminum rings and a physical needle. Digital information is presented with the depth and visual hierarchy of traditional gauges.
Historical language Nardi three-spoke steering-wheel form, Veglia- and Jaeger-inspired typography, and 1950s–70s Ferrari cues. The cabin connects the electric car to Ferrari’s earlier road-car interiors.
Screen access The central display pivots toward either the driver or passenger. Both occupants can use the interface without fixing the screen in one direction.
Materials Milled and brushed aluminum, glass and leather are used as tactile surfaces. The interface communicates operation through texture, resistance and mechanical movement as well as graphics.

These choices do not make the Luce analog. Its displays, software and electric powertrain are thoroughly modern; the difference is that Ferrari gives digital functions a physical envelope.

Extreme EV performance behind the traditional-looking cockpit

The retro-influenced interior should not be mistaken for conservative engineering. Published figures describe a very high-output electric grand tourer.
