Build a cone around a shortened paper cup or upright plastic bottle, secure it to cardboard or a tray, and leave the opening exposed. Add baking soda to the crater, then pour in vinegar to create carbon-dioxide bubbles and a foamy overflow that resembles lava. The reaction is a safe classroom simulation, not molten rock, so use ventilation, eye protection and a surface that can be cleaned.
Materials
Choose either the basic craft list or the measured eruption recipe below.
Basic model materials
- A paper cup or small plastic bottle
- Cardboard, a cookie sheet or a tray
- Play dough, soft clay, dirt, sand or two A3 sheets of card
- Tape and scissors
- Paint and paintbrushes, or colored pencils and crayons
- Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- Vinegar
- Paper towels
- Optional: red food coloring, washing-up liquid, a measuring cup and plastic spoons
NASA JPL Education lists a project time of about 1–2 hours, excluding any time needed for painted parts to dry. Its materials also include graph paper and one to three clear drinking straws for mapping or demonstrating flow. PBS Kids uses red-colored vinegar, baking soda, plastic spoons and a small measuring cup.
Measured eruption mixture
The Natural History Museum’s recipe uses 1 tablespoon bicarbonate of soda, 1 tablespoon washing-up liquid, 2 tablespoons water, ½ cup vinegar and 1 tablespoon red food coloring. You can scale the quantities down for a smaller bottle, but change amounts consistently if you want to compare trials.

Choose a construction method
| Method | How it is made | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Play-dough or soft clay | Shape the material directly around a cup or bottle, leaving the crater open. | Reusable, easy to reshape and suitable for repeated flows. |
| Card cone | Overlap a sheet of card into a cone, tape the seam and secure it around the bottle. | Light, paintable and quick to assemble. |
| Dirt or sand | Pile the material around the container and compact it gently. | A natural-looking display when cleanup space is available. |
These are practical differences between the documented construction options, not controlled performance tests. A bottle gives a deeper, repeatable crater; a play-dough cone is easiest to rebuild; and a card cone provides a smooth surface for paint.
Build the volcano
- Prepare the base. Place cardboard, a cookie sheet or a tray on a wipe-clean surface. Cut a paper cup down to about 1–2 cm high, or use an upright small plastic bottle. Tape the container firmly in the center of the base.
- Form the mountain. Build play dough, soft clay, dirt or sand around the container. For a card version, overlap a sheet into a cone, tape it and fit it around the bottle. Do not cover the opening.
- Shape the crater and slopes. Press the material firmly enough that the cone will not collapse, but keep a clear channel from the crater toward the base so the overflow can be observed.
- Decorate. Paint the cone or add colored dough. Let paint dry completely before adding liquid.
- Set up recording space. Put graph paper beside the model if you will map flow distance, and keep paper towels nearby.
Make it erupt
- Put a spoonful of baking soda in the crater. For a measured trial, use 1 tablespoon.
- Add red food coloring to the vinegar if you want a lava-colored flow. The vinegar may be colored before it is poured.
- Pour vinegar slowly into the crater. For the Natural History Museum recipe, use ½ cup vinegar with the listed soap, water and coloring.
- Watch the foam travel down the cone. Keep your face away from the opening and do not seal the container.
- Wipe up the overflow with paper towels and rinse the tray or other wipe-clean base.
Why vinegar and baking soda look like lava
Vinegar is acidic and baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. When they mix, an acid–base reaction releases carbon dioxide gas. The gas forms bubbles that push the liquid, coloring and soap outward, creating a foamy overflow. It only models the appearance and movement of lava; the material is not hot molten rock. NASA JPL uses the same materials to model fluid lava flows.

Safety and classroom setup
- Run the model on a tray, cardboard or cookie sheet so overflow is contained.
- Work in a well-ventilated area and stand back from the crater while pouring.
- Keep the mixture away from eyes; adult supervision is sensible for cutting card, painting and cleanup.
- Never close or tightly seal a container during the reaction, because gas is produced.
- Use a surface that can be wiped and rinse it after the demonstration.
Turn the craft into a science project
Show repeated lava layers
After one flow has settled, add another colored layer of play dough around the cone and repeat the eruption. NASA JPL’s lava-layering lesson uses three to six colors: three flows are enough for a simple model, while four to six make a clearer shield-volcano example. Trace each flow boundary and draw its outline on graph paper.
Change one variable at a time
Use the same container and cone, then alter only one factor, such as the amount of vinegar or baking soda. The Geological Society of London recommends trying different combinations to produce different-sized eruptions.

Record measurable results
- Foam height above the crater
- Flow distance from the base
- Time until the foam reaches a marked line
- Number of repeated flows before the crater needs refilling
Write down the quantities, room conditions, start time and measurement for every trial. A table of results lets you compare mixtures instead of presenting only a one-time reaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clean up and present the model
Remove wet dough or card before it softens, collect paper towels and rinse the tray. Label the display with the crater container, cone material, reactants, carbon dioxide, your safety precautions and the variable you tested. A short diagram showing bubbles pushing the colored foam outward explains the chemistry more clearly than a claim that the model contains real lava.
