Spruce It Up Throw is Karen Montgomery’s holiday quilt pattern for a 54-1/2 × 70-1/2-inch finished quilt. It combines twelve fusible-appliqué tree blocks with four Rail Fence blocks, then frames the center with two borders. The pattern page from AllPeopleQuilt/American Patchwork & Quilting, updated October 27, 2025, calls for strip-pieced backgrounds, fusible web, blanket stitching, and decorative gold machine embroidery.
What the Spruce It Up Throw looks like
The quilt center is an organized forest of twelve pine-tree blocks. Each tree is built on a pieced red-and-white foundation and decorated with three fused shapes: a green tree, a gold star, and a brown trunk. Four Rail Fence blocks provide a contrasting geometric element. The blocks are arranged in four vertical rows, then surrounded by a dark green inner border and a red swirl-print outer border.
The finished quilt measures 54-1/2 × 70-1/2 inches, the published figure attributed to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors in 2025.

Materials and fabric requirements
The pattern uses a broad assortment of prints rather than a single coordinated fabric. Gather the following before cutting:

The listed backing and batting are larger than the finished top so the quilt can be layered for quilting. The fusible web is a construction material, not an optional embellishment: it temporarily bonds each appliqué shape to its foundation before stitching secures it.
How the appliqué works in this pattern
Fusible appliqué uses a heat-activated adhesive sheet. You trace a reversed shape onto the web, fuse the web to the wrong side of the chosen fabric, cut out the shape, remove the paper, and fuse the fabric shape to the quilt foundation. In Spruce It Up Throw, black machine blanket-stitching finishes the raw edges and holds the appliqué permanently. Gold machine-embroidery thread adds garland detail to four of the trees.

Why the order matters
- Tracing onto fusible web before cutting keeps the shapes stable and gives the adhesive a paper guide.
- Fusing before blanket-stitching prevents the tree, star, and trunk from shifting under the presser foot.
- Using the specified black thread for the blanket stitch creates a defined outline, while gold thread is reserved for the decorative garland.
Construction sequence
- Make twelve appliqué foundations. Strip-piece the red and white fabrics into the foundations specified by the pattern.
- Prepare the appliqué shapes. Trace the green tree, gold star, and brown trunk designs onto lightweight fusible web, following the pattern’s orientation instructions.
- Fuse and cut. Fuse each web shape to the wrong side of its fabric, cut it out, remove the paper backing, and position it on a tree foundation.
- Secure the appliqué. Fuse the shapes in place, then use black machine blanket-stitching around the tree, star, and trunk edges.
- Add the special detail. Stitch gold garlands on four tree blocks with gold machine-embroidery thread.
- Make four Rail Fence blocks. Each block is assembled from five red rectangles.
- Assemble the quilt center. Arrange the twelve tree blocks and four Rail Fence blocks in four vertical rows. Join the blocks and rows according to the pattern layout.
- Add the borders. Sew on the dark green check inner border, followed by the red swirl-print outer border.
- Layer and quilt. Place the completed top over the 61 × 77-inch batting and 3-1/2-yard backing, then quilt through all three layers.
- Bind the quilt. Finish the edges with green stripe bias binding.
Planning the project before you cut
Sort fabrics by job
Keep the red and white foundation prints separate from the green, gold, and brown appliqué fabrics. Reserve the dark green check and red swirl print for borders, and do not cut the green stripe binding until the quilt dimensions are confirmed after quilting.
Plan the decorative stitching
Only four tree blocks receive gold garland stitching, so identify those blocks during layout. Test the blanket-stitch width, density, and thread tension on a scrap made from the same fabric layers before stitching the quilt blocks.

Allow for quilting setup
The batting measurement is 61 × 77 inches, while the finished quilt is 54-1/2 × 70-1/2 inches. Keep the extra material around the top during quilting, and trim the quilted layers only when the quilting is complete and the edges are squared.

Common trouble points
Appliqué edges lift
Recheck that the web was fused at the manufacturer’s recommended temperature and time, with the adhesive side against the fabric. Blanket-stitch around every raw edge; fusible web alone is not the pattern’s final edge finish.

Shapes are reversed
Follow the pattern’s tracing orientation. Fusible-web templates are commonly traced in reverse so the finished fabric shape faces the intended direction after fusing.

Rows do not line up
Lay out all sixteen blocks before joining rows. Confirm the four Rail Fence blocks are in their intended positions and keep seam allowances consistent throughout the tree foundations.

Garland stitching looks uneven
Use a practice sandwich to set machine tension and stitch length with gold machine-embroidery thread. Mark or follow the pattern’s garland path before sewing the four designated tree blocks.
