“1000 Things Made of Bamboo” refers primarily to a historical image gallery, not to one product. The gallery presents bamboo-made objects across music, home, outdoor, fun, art, building and other uses. Its point is breadth: bamboo can be treated as a material for useful objects, structures and visual work.
What “1000 Things Made of Bamboo” is
Make published Phillip Torrone’s short item on October 9, 2005, linking to a gallery of bamboo-made objects. Torrone described the experience this way: “Here’s a site with 1000 things made from Bamboo; once I looked at all the photos, the only thing I could think of is what can’t be made from bamboo.”
The title therefore describes a visual collection rather than a standardized catalog, product line or single invention. The gallery is best understood as an inspiration archive showing how widely bamboo has been applied.

The gallery’s documented categories
A contemporaneous bamboo-organizations reference lists seven sections. They provide a useful map for understanding the collection:
| Category | What it helps you look for | Painting and design angle |
|---|---|---|
| Music | Objects whose purpose is musical | Rhythm, repetition, resonance and motion |
| Home | Household objects and furnishings | Texture, proportion and everyday utility |
| Outdoor | Objects intended for exterior settings | Weather, landscape and spatial scale |
| Fun | Playful or recreational uses | Movement, color and visual humor |
| Art | Bamboo used as an artistic subject or medium | Pattern, contour, shadow and material contrast |
| Building | Construction and architectural applications | Structure, geometry and human scale |
| Others | Uses that do not fit the main sections | Unexpected combinations and hybrid forms |
These headings establish the gallery’s range, but they do not constitute performance tests or a current buying guide. The source does not standardize load capacity, weather resistance, maintenance schedules or prices for the objects shown.

What can you make out of bamboo?
The collection’s categories support a practical way to sort possibilities by purpose:
- Household work: consider objects whose primary role is in the home.
- Outdoor use: separate exterior applications from indoor ones because setting is part of the design problem.
- Music: focus on objects where bamboo’s form is part of the musical function.
- Building: think at architectural scale, where the object is defined by structure and space.
- Art: treat bamboo as a visible material, a subject, or both.
- Play and novelty: use the “fun” category to identify ideas driven by interaction rather than necessity.
For comparing any two bamboo applications, use five questions: What function does it serve? Is it made from a whole culm, split pieces, laminated material or woven elements? What upkeep does the finished object require? How large and portable is it? Is it decorative, task-enabling or both? The gallery supplies the category breadth; it does not answer every technical question for a particular object.

Bamboo as a subject for painters
For painters, the “art” section is only one entry point. Bamboo also offers visual material in the home, outdoor and building categories. A useful study can move between scales:
- Observe the structure: map joints, segments, bends and repeated lines.
- Compare surfaces: look for changes between smooth, split, woven and assembled forms without assuming they behave identically.
- Place the object in context: a household object, musical object and building element communicate different relationships to the body and surrounding space.
- Choose the emphasis: paint function, construction, texture, shadow or the contrast between a natural material and a designed object.
This approach keeps a painting from becoming a generic “bamboo” image: the category and use give the subject its visual meaning.

David Farrelly’s The Book of Bamboo: A Comprehensive Guide to This Remarkable Plant, Its Uses and Its History is a related physical reference. The World of Books listing identifies Thames & Hudson Ltd as publisher, ISBN 9780500279113, paperback format, publication date September 2, 1996, and 340 pages. The listing specifically says the book includes a section on “1000 things made of bamboo.”
Because that listing records a 1996 edition, check the seller for current stock, condition, price and edition details before purchasing.

What the title does—and does not—promise
- It does point to a documented historical gallery of bamboo-made objects.
- It does show breadth across music, home, outdoor, fun, art, building and other uses.
- It does not establish that exactly 1,000 currently accessible products remain online.
- It does not provide standardized durability data, engineering specifications or current market prices.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: “1000 Things Made of Bamboo” is best read as a visual record of bamboo’s versatility. Its seven documented categories—from music and home to art and building—make it a useful source of ideas, while Farrelly’s 1996 book provides the related in-depth reference.
