For stranded colorwork, you can hold one yarn in each hand or carry both yarns in one hand. The best method is the one that lets you select either strand without twisting, keep the color order consistent, and leave floats loose enough for the fabric to lie flat. In a common right-handed setup, hold the background yarn in the right hand and the motif or dominant yarn in the left, with the dominant strand kept below the background strand on the wrong side.

What the yarn position controls

Stranded knitting works two or more colors in the same row or round while the unused yarn travels behind the stitches. It is commonly worked in the round in stockinette so the motif remains easy to read. The carried strands must span the fabric when the stitches are both relaxed and stretched. A float pulled tight gathers the fabric into puckers; a float that is too loose can snag or sink toward the back.

Color order also affects appearance. Keeping the dominant motif color below the background float makes motif stitches slightly larger and more prominent. The same lower-and-upper relationship must be maintained throughout the project.

Choose a yarn-holding method

Method Hand position and style Advantages Points to watch
One color in each hand Often background in the right hand and dominant color in the left for a right-handed knitter; combines English and Continental movements. Each color has a dedicated hand, making selection and color order easy to see. Two hands require practice coordinating tension; the lower dominant strand must remain below the background.
Both colors in one hand In an English-style setup, background over the index finger and contrast over the middle finger of the right hand. Continental knitters can separate both strands on the left hand. Useful when you prefer one-handed knitting and can keep the strands physically separated. Strands can slide together or twist unless their upper/lower order is repeated consistently.
Knitting thimble A thimble worn on one finger guides two colors under tension. Optional aid when yarns tangle or are difficult to separate with the fingers. It changes the feel of the yarn path and is not necessary if your fingers already control the strands comfortably.

One color in each hand

With two hands, assign the background yarn to your right hand and the motif or dominant yarn to your left if you knit right-handed. Keep the dominant strand below the background strand on the wrong side. This stable relationship helps the motif stand out and makes it easier to pick the intended color without searching through both strands.

  • THE ORIGINAL WOOL-EASE: A Lion Brand Yarn classic, Wool-Ease has been a go-to wool blend for generations of knitters and crocheters. Planning a larger project? Buy 3 skeins at once to help ensure your yarn comes from the same dye lot.

Both colors in one hand

For an English-style arrangement, place the background yarn over your index finger and the contrast yarn over your middle finger. When changing colors, pick the lower strand from underneath, then return it to its upper position over the other strand. Keep the same order on knit and purl rows. A Continental knitter can use the same separation with both strands in the left hand.

Whichever hand carries the yarn, comfort and repeatable tension matter more than adopting a particular school of knitting. As Brooklyn Tweed quotes June Hemmons Hiatt, the choice “is as much a matter of anatomy as it is of dexterity.”

Using a knitting thimble

A knitting thimble can hold two colors under tension on one finger. Treat it as an optional tool: try it if the strands continually slide together or tangle, but do not force it if it makes your tension less predictable.

How to prevent tight, puckered floats

  1. Spread the stitches. Before drawing the next color, distribute the stitches across the right needle as they will sit in the finished fabric. The float should span the full width of the stitch, not just the compressed stitches near the needle tip.
  2. Pick the new color without pulling. Keep the carried strand flat and loose behind the work. Do not cinch it against the last stitch.
  3. Stretch the work as you knit. Gently spread the stitches while changing colors so the float accommodates the fabric at its working width. This is especially important after several single-color stitches.
  4. Adjust at the end of the round. Check the back of the work and ease any section that feels taut before continuing.
  5. Check the fabric, not just the strand. If the fabric pulls into vertical ridges or the motif looks compressed, relax your grip and spread the stitches farther. If long loops protrude or catch on your fingers, the float needs less slack or a periodic catch.

Keep color dominance consistent

Choose which color is dominant before you begin. For a motif that should pop, keep its float in the lower position and the background float above it on the wrong side. Do not change that relationship when switching hands, beginning a new round, or correcting a mistake. If the pattern does not designate a motif and background color, choose an order and use it throughout; reversing the order partway through can make one section look darker or more prominent than another.

Catch long floats safely

When a nonworking yarn travels a long distance, catch or lock it at intervals specified by the pattern. One common locking motion is to bring the resting color over the working color behind the work before knitting the next stitch, then return the resting yarn to its usual position. Make the catch unobtrusive and preserve the dominant color in the lower position if the motif needs to remain prominent. Follow the pattern’s stated maximum float length and catching instructions when they differ.

Swatch the way you will knit the project

Make a colorwork swatch in the round when the finished item will be knitted in the round. Circular and flat knitting can produce different gauge because knitters often hold the yarn or form stitches differently on purl rows. Both Brooklyn Tweed and Ysolda recommend circular swatching for colorwork. Measure after the swatch has been washed and dried in the manner you plan to use for the garment, then adjust needle size or tension before starting the project.

A practical setup routine

  1. Assign the background and dominant colors.
  2. Choose one yarn per hand or separate both strands on one hand.
  3. Arrange the dominant strand below the background strand on the wrong side.
  4. Work a few pattern repeats, spreading the stitches before every color change.
  5. Inspect the back for tight floats, loose loops, or twisted strands.
  6. Reposition your fingers or try a thimble only if the yarns cannot remain separated comfortably.
  7. Continue only when the fabric lies flat both relaxed and gently stretched.

Troubleshooting common problems

The colorwork puckers

Your floats are too tight. Relax the working yarn, spread the stitches across the needle before changing colors, and stretch the worked stitches as you pick up the next strand.

The floats snag

A long nonworking strand may need a periodic catch. Lock it according to the pattern’s instructions, keeping the dominant strand in its lower position.

The motif changes prominence

The yarn order has probably reversed. Re-establish which color is dominant and keep that strand below the background float for every change.

The two yarns twist together

Separate the strands over different fingers, assign one color to each hand, or try a knitting thimble. Select each color without crossing the strands around one another.

The swatch looks fine but the garment is tight

Your flat swatch may not represent circular colorwork. Re-swatch in the round and measure that sample after finishing and blocking it.
