Artist Adrian Landon built Mechanical Horse, a life-size stainless-steel kinetic sculpture that performs a slow-motion gallop when a button is pressed. Its movement comes from one small electric motor working through more than 100 bearings, 23 articulating joints, custom laser-cut sprockets and 30 feet (9 m) of chain.
Who made the animated life-size mechanical horse?
Adrian Landon created Mechanical Horse. New Atlas reported on 9 April 2015 that the sculpture had been displayed at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. Landon began the project in 2013, after spending about four years making non-moving horse sculptures. Adafruit’s 2 February 2016 feature described the work as almost two years in the making and said Landon designed, machined and sculpted it at home and in his Brooklyn metal shop.

The horse is made from stainless steel and is intended as an artwork rather than a practical riding machine. Landon told New Atlas, “Horses have been in my family for generations.” He said the sculpture expresses his relationship with horses and gives people—including those who do not ride—a sense of an animal that was once central to everyday life.

How does Landon’s Mechanical Horse move?
Button-triggered motion
The published description is specific: a person presses a button and the horse performs a slow-motion gallop. The reports do not establish autonomous operation or claim that the sculpture reproduces a complete, biologically accurate horse gait.

The motor, chain and sprockets transmit motion through the joints, while the bearings support the many moving interfaces. That arrangement lets a relatively small actuator animate a life-size form without suggesting that the horse is independently intelligent or self-balancing.

What is inside the life-size sculpture?
The public descriptions do not provide a complete engineering drawing, motor rating, chain pitch, sprocket dimensions or joint-by-joint timing chart. The documented parts nevertheless show the design strategy: distribute motion through a long chain drive and many supported pivots, then shape the resulting movement into a recognizable equine gesture.

Because the sculpture’s mechanism was custom designed and machined by Landon, the published component count should not be treated as a construction plan. It identifies the scale and complexity of the mechanism, not a parts list that will reproduce the artwork.
Kinetic sculpture or automaton?
Mechanical Horse is most precisely described as a kinetic sculpture or mechanical horse: it is an artwork whose physical structure moves when a viewer activates it. “Automaton” is a useful comparison term for animated mechanical figures, but the documented trigger here is a button, not autonomous sensing or a programmed sequence that runs without an operator.

A different life-size work, Jacques Monestier’s The Large Trotter, demonstrates why the distinction matters. Monestier’s official portfolio describes a radar-activated horse that detects an approaching person, trots and stretches its head, tail and legs for about 30 seconds, then returns to its starting position. It uses electric actuators and stepper motors with computer programming. Landon’s work, by contrast, is documented as button activated and driven by a single small electric motor and chain-and-joint mechanism.

Can you build a life-size mechanical riding horse?
A separate current resource from TrueBuild Studio offers a related build-your-own life-size mechanical riding horse. It is not Landon’s sculpture and TrueBuild Studio is not identified as its creator. The company advertises a 127-page illustrated digital construction guide, an estimated 30–50 hour build and the use of standard workshop tools.

What the TrueBuild project uses
The guide describes a mechanism based on a regular corded drill, a worm gearbox, shafts, bearings, flat steel and cables. The guide is sold as a worldwide digital download through Etsy; it does not supply a finished horse or a physical kit.
What to verify before buying components
- Match the worm gearbox to the guide’s specified ratio, torque and shaft requirements.
- Confirm that a compact corded drill fits the documented drive arrangement and can run for the intended duty cycle.
- Plan for suitable steel, bearings, cables and workshop equipment; “standard tools” does not mean that no fabrication tools or metalworking skills are needed.
- Use the guide’s specifications before selecting any retail component listing, because a visually similar gearbox or drill may be incompatible.
The guide offers a reproducible project route, while Landon’s artwork remains a bespoke stainless-steel sculpture with a different mechanism and artistic purpose.
Why the horse matters as an artwork
Landon’s stated motivation connects the engineering to family history and memory. The machine does not merely imitate an animal’s outline: its slow, deliberate motion asks viewers to notice how mechanical parts can suggest weight, rhythm and presence. That interpretation remains grounded in the artist’s explanation that he wanted to portray his relationship with horses and make that experience accessible to people who are not riders.
