Jatin Das’s human figures feel timeless because they are stripped of the usual clues that place a person in a particular story: clothing, architecture, named locations and historical setting. Line, pose and bodily tension carry the meaning instead. The result can feel still and kinetic, spiritual and sensual, intimate and distant at once.
Why Das’s figures seem beyond time and place
Das says he paints and draws human figures “bare, without embellishment, devoid of time and place.” His figures generally appear without architecture or an explicit narrative, so viewers have little reason to read them as characters in a specific episode. The body becomes the subject and the means of expression.
The curators’ note for Jatin Das: A Retrospective 1963–2023 describes the figures as “iconic and primal,” with a life of their own. They are “simultaneously still and in motion, deeply spiritual and intrinsically sensual, reflective as well as dynamic.” That combination helps explain why a figure may seem caught in a gesture while also carrying a sense of movement or inward thought.

Das describes the work as “not narrative” but “metaphoric, poetic and suggestive.” In an interview with Scroll, he said that “human anguish, pain, affection, tenderness” are expressed through his “energised bare figures.” Rather than assigning one fixed emotion to every body, the line and gesture leave room for the viewer to feel those tensions.
How line, gesture and surface carry emotion
When a painting offers few narrative clues, the viewer’s attention shifts to how the figure occupies the page or canvas: a curve, a turn, a compressed shape or a quick, flowing line. Scroll describes an undercurrent of drama in Das’s drawn forms. Their emotional force comes less from a depicted event than from the energy of the marks and the body’s pose.

Das works in conté, ink, charcoal, watercolour, oil and acrylic. In the Scroll interview, he calls watercolour a cherished medium and says colour wash helps him reach a desired texture. The medium changes the surface and character of a work; it does not, by itself, dictate a single reading.
For example, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) record lists Two Abstract Figure as pen and ink, Classical Figure as watercolour on paper, Lovers as pen and ink, and Reclining Figure – II as conté on paper. These works offer different ways to look at line, wash and mass without requiring a plot to connect them.

From bare figures to workers, portraits and place
The uncluttered figure is central to Das’s art, but it is not the only subject he has pursued. His official biography records a lockdown series of 200 ink paintings about mass migration. The retrospective also included portraits of writers, artists, musicians and friends, as well as works on migrant workers and manhole cleaners. These subjects bring more social and biographical context into view than the figures without a setting.
A useful way to compare Das’s works is to notice how much context each one supplies, then look at the choices of line, medium, space and emotional register. A nearly isolated body may ask you to attend closely to gesture; a portrait or labour-related subject can direct attention toward a particular person or condition. His monumental painting The Journey of India: Mohenjo-Daro to Mahatma Gandhi, listed in his official biography as 7 × 68 feet and installed at the Indian Parliament in New Delhi in 2001, signals a very different scale and historical reach from a small drawing of a figure.

How Das describes his process and artistic aims
Das has said that beginning a work still feels like beginning anew: “When I look at an empty canvas or a bare sheet of paper, I feel I am starting to paint or draw for the first time.” He also says it is important to “learn, unlearn, reflect and then do what the inner mind says.”
In the Scroll interview, he says he does not begin with a preconceived plan. Lines, palette, brushstrokes, composition, rhythm and materiality emerge in the act of working; he signs a work when satisfied and then turns the canvas to face the wall. He resists treating a painting as a puzzle with one authoritative explanation: “Art is a visual medium that speaks for itself. It does not need to be dominated by art theory.”

That independence sits alongside the practical reality of a working artist. Das has said: “The dichotomy is that I live on the sale of my paintings, but I do not paint to sell.” His official biography describes him as a painter, poet, sculptor, muralist, printmaker, teacher and cultural expert; it records more than 71 one-man shows and the Padma Bhushan in 2012.
