Nakshi kantha is an embroidered quilt tradition from Bangladesh in which layered cloth becomes a surface for pictorial, floral and personal designs. Traditionally made through women’s household knowledge and passed between generations, it has served practical, ceremonial and devotional purposes. Collectors, museums and cultural organizations helped establish it as recognized folk art, while contemporary makers also use it for income and artistic expression. The evidence shows adaptation in use and visibility, not one uniform or fully measured transformation.
What is nakshi kantha?
UNESCO’s description of Bangladesh’s nominated cultural element defines nakshi kantha as an embroidered quilt decorated with pictorial designs and/or floral patterns on one or both sides. A conventional arrangement may place a lotus medallion at the center, trees at the corners and additional motifs across the surrounding field.

Uses beyond bedding
Nakshi kantha has never been limited to a bedcover. UNESCO’s nomination account lists several functions:
| Use | How it functions |
|---|---|
| Floor mat | A textile spread for sitting or daily household use. |
| Wearable wrap | A cloth that can be draped around the body. |
| Bag | A practical container made with kantha decoration. |
| Gift | A handmade textile exchanged on personal or social occasions. |
| Sujni | A ceremonial spread used for welcoming or seating guests. |
| Jainamaz | A Muslim prayer rug. |
These uses help explain why a kantha can be both utilitarian and expressive. The object’s purpose, rather than a single fixed pattern, often determines its scale, construction and imagery.
Who makes and transmits it?
UNESCO describes the traditional practice as women’s work learned informally from mothers and grandmothers and passed to daughters. That account highlights household teaching, observation and practice rather than a standardized school or written curriculum.

This should be read as a description of traditional transmission, not a claim that only women participate in every contemporary workshop, cooperative or commercial production setting. It also does not mean that every maker has the same training or that regional practice follows one model.

Where is the tradition rooted?
The UNESCO decision says nakshi kantha is found throughout Bangladesh, with particularly strong prevalence in Jessore, Kushtia, Chapai Nawabganj and Jamalpur. Regional concentration does not create a single “correct” design. Local materials, family habits, available cloth and community preferences all influence the finished textile.
How is nakshi kantha made?
Layering and securing cloth
Kantha construction commonly begins with worn or reused cloth layered into a thicker textile. Running stitches hold the layers together and create both structure and surface texture. The exact cloth and assembly method can differ between Bangladesh practices and related kantha traditions elsewhere in South Asia.
Building the embroidered surface
Makers add motifs with an embroidery needle and thread, working through the layered fabric. A central lotus, corner trees, plants, animals, people, household scenes and geometric borders may appear, although no single catalogue governs what can be shown.
Interpreting regional technique carefully
A Government of India handicrafts reference describes West Bengal kantha using layered cloth, running stitches, embroidery needles and motifs drawn from everyday life, folklore and mythology. It also records later products such as apparel, furnishings, accessories and table linen. Those details are useful comparative context for Indian kantha; they should not automatically be treated as universal instructions for every Bangladeshi nakshi kantha.

What do the motifs mean?
Motifs can carry religious, natural, domestic or autobiographical associations, but their meaning is not fixed across all makers. A lotus may occupy a conventional central position, while trees, animals, figures or household imagery can express memory, belief, aspiration or observation. Interpretation should consider the individual textile, its maker, its region and its intended use rather than assigning a universal dictionary meaning.
From household textile to recognized folk art
The Bangladesh National Museum inventory presents twentieth-century recognition as a cumulative process involving collecting, writing, exhibitions and preservation. It records Rabindranath Tagore collecting kantha from 1915, Jasim Uddin writing a long poem about it in 1929, a Gurusaday Dutt exhibition in Calcutta in March 1932, and later institutional work including the Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation, established in July 1975. These dates document stages in public recognition, not the beginning of the tradition itself.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s 2023 exhibition on women’s quilts from Bengal provides object-based context for works dated approximately from the 1870s through the mid-twentieth century. Its interpretation emphasizes that makers’ voices are visible in their embroidery while noting that the names of every artist are not known. Museum collections therefore reveal design and technique without supplying a complete census of makers.
What “evolving” means today
The available evidence supports several kinds of change:
Rank #4
- Changing functions: textiles associated with household, ceremonial and devotional use also circulate as bags, apparel, furnishings and other products.
- Expanded audiences: collecting, exhibitions and museums have brought kantha to viewers beyond the communities where it was made.
- Economic role: the national inventory describes contemporary practice as systematic activity that can provide income and artistic expression.
- Continuing domestic knowledge: commercial visibility does not prove that household making has disappeared or that every region has followed the same path.
No reliable, owner-attributed current statistic establishes the size of the workforce, output, earnings, exports or market value. It is therefore more accurate to describe nakshi kantha as adapting across uses and settings than to claim a quantified industry or a single national trajectory.
Is nakshi kantha recognized by UNESCO?
UNESCO’s 2020 committee decision did not inscribe nakshi kantha on the Representative List. The committee referred Bangladesh’s nomination back for revision and invited resubmission in a following cycle. It also asked the state to address community-centered safeguarding and explicitly warned about over-commercialization, stating: “Further invites the State Party to take into consideration the potential risk of over-commercialization of the element when developing the safeguarding measures.”
That distinction matters: a referral is an outcome in the nomination process, not inscription. Any later status should be checked against UNESCO’s current listing before being described as final.

“Traditional” and “contemporary” are not automatic quality rankings. Compare textiles using the same questions:

- Period and provenance: When and where was the piece made, and what documentation accompanies it?
- Intended use: Was it a household cover, ceremonial spread, prayer rug, garment, bag or another object?
- Construction and stitch: How are layers assembled, and which stitches create the surface?
- Motif and layout: Is there a central medallion, border, narrative scene, floral field or another composition?
- Regional context: Which community or area is associated with the textile?
- Maker attribution: Is an individual named, or is the work documented through family or community transmission?
This approach describes difference without treating museum age, commercial production or anonymity as proof of greater or lesser authenticity.
What to look for when buying or commissioning one
- Ask where the textile was made and whether the seller can identify the maker or producing group.
- Confirm whether the piece is hand-embroidered, machine-assisted or newly printed.
- Request information about the cloth layers, dimensions, care requirements and intended use.
- Prefer transparent provenance and fair attribution over vague claims of “authentic” design.
- Remember that a commercial object can still reflect living craft knowledge, while a high price alone does not prove cultural or technical significance.
Making tools and materials
For someone studying the technique, an embroidery needle and suitable layered cloth are basic starting points. The West Bengal government handicrafts reference specifically identifies needles as a kantha tool; that is a general craft reference, not a culturally specific product endorsement. Thread choice, fabric weight and stitch scale should follow the project and the maker’s local or family practice.
