Chennai artist Shilpa Mitha makes coin-sized Indian food miniatures from air-dry clay, shaping familiar dishes into detailed keepsakes that have found fans in India and abroad. Her work ranges from dosas and idlis to biryanis and regional food spreads, with the realism of the finished dish as a central aim.
Who makes miniature Indian food from clay?
Shilpa Mitha began making tiny food models after noticing that, although miniatures were common, Indian dishes were rarely represented. “I realised that there are a lot of miniatures around but no one has tried making Indian food,” she told Scroll.in in 2018.
She focuses on Indian cuisine partly to challenge the idea abroad that it is “just curry.” Her subjects include South Indian staples such as sakkarai pongal, idlis, dosas and pesarattu, alongside biryanis, chaat and spreads representing Punjabi, Bengali and North-Eastern cuisines. Rather than model every dish, she tends to choose foods with distinctive visual features, avoids many leafy dishes and curries that look alike, and considers customer suggestions.

How does she make a tiny dosa or biryani?
Mitha builds a miniature from its visible components instead of treating the dish as a single lump of clay. She studies a photograph and the recipe to identify ingredients, forms those ingredients individually, then paints and assembles them. Her documented materials include air-dry clay, acrylic or oil colours, a needle-like sculpting tool and varnish.

- Sculpt the ingredients. Mitha forms the small components separately from air-dry clay, using a needle-like tool to add fine detail.
- Paint and assemble. Acrylic or oil colours create the different tones, after which the pieces are arranged as the finished dish.
- Varnish the miniature. The coating gives the surface an oily sheen, helping the model resemble freshly cooked food.
Biryani can take especially long: clay shades must be mixed carefully, and regional versions differ in their ingredients and accompaniments. Mitha’s mother, Usha Harigopal, helps knead the clay because Mitha has a muscle condition that makes frequent kneading difficult.

What makes the miniatures distinctive?
Mitha has said she wants her pieces to look as real as possible, rather than primarily like abstract works of art. That goal shapes both the ingredient-by-ingredient construction and the finish: tiny variations in colour and the varnished sheen help convey texture and a freshly served appearance.
The menu also makes regional variety visible in miniature. A sweet pongal, dosa or pesarattu reads differently from a biryani or a spread of dishes, and the broader range gives viewers a way to encounter food traditions they may not know. Mitha’s bestseller, according to the profile, is the dosa.

How does golu connect to collecting miniatures?
Mitha grew up with her family’s elaborate Bommai Kolu, also called golu: a South Indian tradition of arranging figurines on stepped displays. She especially enjoyed wedding-feast and Kumbhakarna figurine sets. She connects that tradition with international dollhouse collecting, explaining, “Internationally, people collect dollhouses, but in South India we have the golu culture.”
That cultural frame helps explain why a tiny food model can be more than a novelty. It can join a display of collected figures, or serve as a small object celebrating a particular dish or food tradition.

How have people used or commissioned the pieces?
Customers have bought Mitha’s work as fridge magnets, pendants and display collectibles, and restaurateurs have commissioned miniatures as well. One notable commission came from Australian celebrity chef Daniel Wilson, who requested a miniature of his signature Huxtaburger for his Melbourne burger chain.
Scroll.in’s March 31, 2018 profile reported that Mitha had more than 11,000 Instagram followers and was receiving nearly 20 orders and requests a day at that time. Those are figures reported in 2018, not a current measure of demand or proof of present-day availability. The profile does not establish current prices, inventory or a current sales channel.
