Shabari’s berries carry a challenge to caste hierarchy: in a familiar Ramayana episode, the elderly devotee tastes the fruit before offering it to Rama, who accepts it as an expression of love. Nandalal Bose’s 1941 paintings recast her across three stages of life; later, temple-building and mass mobilization in Gujarat made her an emblem in Hindutva politics. These are not simply different pictures of one settled figure. They give Shabari distinct bodies, places and political meanings.
Who is Shabari in the Ramayana?
In the episode described by Meera Kumar, Shabari is an elderly tribal woman devoted to Rama. She tastes the berries she has gathered so that she can offer him the sweetest ones. The gesture places affection and hospitality above a concern with caste purity: the fruit is already tasted, yet Rama accepts it.
That reversal helps explain why the episode can carry meanings beyond private devotion. Shabari is represented as socially marginal, but her encounter with Rama gives her an intimate authority: she offers what she has gathered, and he receives it. Later retellings and political uses have not all preserved the same emphasis.

Why did Nandalal Bose paint Shabari at three ages?
The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) records Bose’s Sabari in her youth as an egg-tempera-on-paper work dated 1941, accession ngma-04834. The museum record says the series comprises three paintings showing different stages of Shabari’s life. Kumar describes the figures as a young girl, a middle-aged woman and an elderly woman, each collecting berries.
Instead of depicting only the moment when Shabari meets Rama, the series makes her life before that encounter visible. Gathering berries becomes a repeated activity through which the figure is understood across time. The museum record identifies the subject as a tribal woman from the Ramayana; Kumar describes Bose’s figures as Santhal-coded. That is a reading of their visual coding, not evidence that the epic gives Shabari a specific Santhal identity.

How Bose’s modernism shaped his Shabari
Bose’s interest in bringing ancient myth into his surroundings is part of Kumar’s interpretation of the series. The paintings’ emphasis on Shabari’s life and berry-gathering activity localizes a familiar epic figure rather than treating the story as remote from the artist’s own world.
This work also belongs to broader debates about nationalist art and the body. Niharika Dinkar’s 2010 Oxford Art Journal analysis places Bose’s early work within swadeshi visual politics and considers the slender body those politics authorized. Natasha Eaton’s 2014 Art Bulletin article examines the contested place of color in Indian nationalism. Amita Kini-Singh’s 2022 study discusses Japanese artistic contacts and techniques in Bose’s work and their significance to modern Indian art. These accounts offer contexts for reading the series; they do not establish a single, definitive political meaning for the paintings.

Why does Shabari appear in different places?
Shabari traditions have been attached to locations including Hampi and Vijayanagara, Gujarat and Sikkim, according to Kumar. This geographic flexibility is one way the Ramayana remains locally meaningful: communities and institutions can connect a widely known story to a particular landscape. Such a connection is not politically neutral. It can lend local legitimacy to a place, a community or a claim about religious heritage.
That does not mean every local association has the same origin or purpose. The available account identifies several locations but does not establish one universally accepted site for Shabari’s story. The Dangs temple is a specific example of an institution built around her, not proof that all Shabari traditions point to Gujarat.

How did Shabari become a Hindutva symbol?
In their study of the Dangs in Gujarat, scholars S. Kanungo and D. Joshi analyze how the Sangh Parivar reinvented Shabari, a marginal Adivasi woman, by incorporating her into a Hindu pantheon and rehabilitating her in a temple. Their discussion considers Hindutva missionary Aseemanand, the temple’s iconography and the 2006 Shabari Kumbh. In this reading, an Adivasi figure’s recognition is also a means of bringing local sacred space and identity into a wider Hindu nationalist framework.
The distinction between the scholars’ interpretation and organizers’ stated purpose matters. A University of Victoria repository account gives an estimate of six to seven lakh attendees—about 600,000 to 700,000—at the February 2006 gathering and reports that organizers described its aim as defending Hindu society and countering Christian missionary activity. Those figures are an estimate reported by that account, not an independently audited attendance count; the stated aim belongs to the organizers, not to every participant.

Can Shabari be reclaimed by Adivasi communities?
Kumar raises the question of whether Adivasi artists and communities can reclaim Shabari from competing nationalist and Hindutva appropriations. It is not answered simply by pointing to the character’s tribal identity. The question is who has the authority to represent her, which histories and communities are made visible, and whether Shabari’s story can be told on terms set by Adivasi people themselves.
Bose’s life-stage paintings, the local traditions associated with different regions, and the Dangs temple project each make Shabari mean something in a particular setting. Reading them together does not make them interchangeable: a devotional episode, a modernist art series and a political mass gathering have different makers, media and purposes.
