India’s 2016 demonetisation quickly became a subject for cartoons and dark humour: queues, cash shortages, changing rules and political statements gave artists a visual language for confusion and hardship. Contemporary reports document cartoons shared on Twitter and satire circulating more broadly on social media, but they do not establish specific original Instagram posts. The distinction matters: the cultural response is documented, while Instagram authorship and reach are not.
What “demonetisation” meant in November 2016
On 8 November 2016, the Government of India announced that existing ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes would cease to be legal tender. The Reserve Bank of India’s currency FAQ places the withdrawal in the context of the Gazette notification issued that day. The government described its objectives as addressing black money, fake currency and terror financing, as well as formalising economic activity and expanding digital payments; these were stated aims, not proof that each aim was achieved (Ministry of Finance, 30 August 2017).
The immediate disruption supplied a recognisable subject for satire. People faced queues at banks and ATMs and had to follow changing arrangements for exchanging or accessing cash. Those experiences could be rendered in a single image or joke without requiring a reader to follow every policy announcement.

What the cartoons and jokes satirised
Queues and the strain of daily life
A December 2016 Business Standard roundup collected cartoons responding to queues outside banks and ATMs, rule changes and leaders’ statements. Its examples came from named cartoonists and news accounts, with posts on Twitter dated across November and December. They show how cartooning turned a widely shared practical frustration into commentary, but they are not evidence of Instagram-originated work.
A contemporaneous National Herald report described jokes, memes and cartoons circulating on social media in Hindi, Urdu and English. Some drew on cash shortages and queues, while others recast inconvenience through familiar film titles or political phrases. This was reported social-media humour, not a documented catalogue of Instagram posts.

Changing rules as Calvinball
One especially clear visual analogy came from Chennai-based IT consultant Krish Ashok, who used characters in the style of Calvin and Hobbes to poke fun at demonetisation. As Scroll.in reported, Ashok said the idea came from someone on Twitter comparing the random rule changes to Calvinball, the fictional game whose rules keep changing. The joke made policy unpredictability legible through a familiar comic-strip format. Scroll documented the strips on Twitter, not Instagram.
From social sharing to a public exhibition
The response was not confined to online sharing. In February 2017, The Times of India reported on “Surgical Strokes,” an exhibition near Subash Bose Park in Kochi. It displayed about 200 cartoons drawn over two months and included selected work from 64 cartoonists (The Times of India, 4 February 2017).

CariToon director Anoop Radhakrishnan said demonetisation was chosen because it was “one of the most distressing issue for the public.” He described cartoons as a medium that could handle sensitive issues vividly and portray a spectrum of responses. The exhibition is evidence of a public, offline dimension to the satire; it does not establish that its cartoons were posted on Instagram.

The title’s Instagram framing should not be mistaken for verified platform provenance. The cited contemporary accounts document Twitter posts, general social-media circulation and a gallery exhibition. They do not identify a set of original Instagram cartoons, name their Instagram creators, or establish engagement figures. A cartoon reposted to Instagram may exist, but the reporting cited here does not verify one.

That boundary also matters when interpreting the cartoons. They are evidence of artists and satirists responding to queues, uncertainty and public messaging—not a measure of national opinion or proof of the policy’s economic effects. In a 2023 parliamentary answer, the Ministry of Finance said the Government had published no study on the effect of withdrawal of legal-tender character of the specified notes on the Indian economy, while noting related RBI studies (Ministry of Finance, 21 March 2023). The cartoons can illuminate how disruption felt and was discussed; they cannot settle the economic verdict.
