Turn a clean, intact small wine bottle into a miniature vase with a few short stems or dried flowers. Leave the glass whole and choose the finish that suits your style: wrap it in jute for a rustic look, or paint it with dots, stripes, or a simple floral motif.
Choose a look and gather the materials
A small bottle can work as a bud vase without any decoration: its narrow opening helps keep a few short stems together. BottleFirst describes half-size bottles as suitable for miniature floral displays, but bottle shapes and capacities vary, so use the bottle you have and keep the arrangement modest.

These are accessible craft approaches, but the tutorials do not provide a standardized time comparison.

Prepare the bottle
- Check the glass. Choose an empty bottle with no cracks or chips. Do not cut it; these projects need the bottle intact.
- Wash and rinse it. Let the bottle dry before adding cord or paint.
- Decide what to do with the label. Leave it visible, remove it, or cover it with the wrap. Label removal is optional for the jute design. Paint adheres best to a clean surface, so remove label residue before painting; Crafts by Amanda’s tutorial describes soaking a label in hot water, cleaning away glue, and wiping the surface with rubbing alcohol.
Option 1: Wrap the bottle in jute
- Apply hot glue near the bottle’s base and press the end of the jute cord into it. Take care around hot glue and the glue-gun tip.
- Wrap the cord tightly around the bottle, keeping each row close to the one below. Add glue every few wraps to hold the cord in place.
- As the bottle narrows toward the shoulder and neck, add glue more often so the cord does not slide. Continue to the height you want, then secure and trim the end.
- If desired, attach a strip of burlap ribbon or a small flower or heart embellishment after the cord is secure.
This wrapping sequence follows the method in Busy Creating Memories’ tutorial. You can leave the neck uncovered for contrast or continue wrapping it; the bottle’s taper makes that section the place where closer glue spacing matters most.
Option 2: Paint dots, stripes, or flowers
- Start with clean, dry glass. Remove label glue and let the bottle dry fully before painting.
- Plan a simple design. Paint dots with a small brush or stamp, add a basic flower motif, or use painter’s tape to mask stripes or a color-blocked band.
- Apply thin coats. Green Matters’ masked-design tutorial recommends at least two coats of water-based acrylic paint. Let each coat dry before applying the next; follow the paint maker’s drying instructions.
- Add details only after the base is dry. For dots or a floral motif, use chalk paint or acrylic craft paint as described in Crafts by Amanda’s vase tutorial.
- Let the finished decoration dry completely before arranging flowers.
If using spray paint, work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, as advised on Bogle Family Vineyards’ painted-bottle project page. Its project suggests dried flowers. A water-based acrylic approach is another option described by Green Matters.

Arrange flowers and care for the vase
Use one or a few short stems, or choose dried florals. A narrow opening naturally limits the arrangement, which helps a miniature display look tidy rather than crowded. Handle a decorated bottle as a decorative project: the cited craft sources do not establish that painted surfaces are suitable for food contact.
Keep the glass intact for these ideas. Cutting a bottle is unnecessary for a small vase and involves additional tools and handling risks beyond the scope of a simple upcycling project.
