To add lead, first match the refill diameter printed on the pencil or its packaging. Most thin-lead mechanical pencils load from the back: remove the cap or knob, pull out the eraser, drop in the model’s recommended number of sticks, replace the eraser and cap, then click, slide, shake or twist the normal feed control with the tip pointed down. The exact opening and capacity are model-specific, so never force a resistant part.
1. Match the lead diameter
Use the exact diameter specified for your pencil. Common examples include 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm; STAEDTLER lists these widths across its mechanical-pencil range (STAEDTLER product information). Pilot warns that using a different diameter can cause malfunction (Pilot use and care guide).
- Check printing on the barrel, clip, grip, package or instruction sheet.
- Buy refills marked with that same number and intended for mechanical pencils.
- Do not assume all “standard” sticks fit: a slightly different size can slip, fail to advance or jam.
2. Identify where your pencil loads
Look at the following designs before opening anything. They do not all use the same refill procedure.

3. Load a typical back-reservoir pencil
- Retract the writing tip. This keeps the stick from snapping while you work.
- Remove the top cap or knob. Depending on the model, pull it off or unscrew it. Do not twist against resistance.
- Pull out the eraser. This exposes the lead reservoir on many Pilot-style pencils and similar designs (Pilot guide).
- Insert the correct sticks. Drop them into the reservoir without packing them tightly. Use the quantity stated for your model; if none is stated, start with only a few.
- Replace the eraser and cap or knob. Seat each part fully, but stop if threads or fittings bind.
- Feed the lead normally. Point the tip downward and use the pencil’s specified click, clip, shake or twist control. Several clicks may be needed for the first stick to reach the clutch.
How much lead should you put in?
There is no universal capacity. Published limits are model-specific examples:

These figures are not interchangeable rules for every pencil. Overfilling can prevent sticks from moving freely or leave fragments in the feed tube.
Getting a newly loaded stick to feed
With the pencil assembled, hold it tip-down and operate its normal feed control. A click mechanism advances when you press the top button; clip-slide and cap-slide models use their named slider; some pencils advance when shaken; a twist model uses its rotating barrel. Use only the control supplied by that design rather than pushing the lead by hand.

If the lead will not advance
Check the size and reservoir first
Remove the eraser or cap again and confirm that every stick matches the marked diameter. Take out loose or broken pieces and avoid adding more sticks while the passage is blocked.

BIC’s guidance for its pencils is to remove the eraser and loose lead, gently clear the feed tube with a straight pin or spare lead, then insert correctly sized lead and click several times (BIC FAQ). Keep the tool aligned with the tube and use light pressure.

Clear a rOtring transport failure
For rOtring pencils, the support procedure is to verify the diameter; if transport still fails, unscrew the tip, tap out fragments and blow residue from the chuck (rOtring support). This instruction is specific to that product line.
Use the Cross procedure for a Cross pencil
Cross advises engaging the mechanism and, for its loose-lead procedure, holding the pencil upright while gently pressing the tip onto paper as the cap is turned. Never force the mechanism; check the model’s support instructions if it still does not catch (Cross instructions).

When the pencil still will not work
- Stop if the cap, tip or clutch resists.
- Remove visible fragments rather than adding more lead.
- Confirm whether the pencil is a cassette, lead-tube or 2 mm leadholder design.
- Consult the exact model manual before disassembling the nose or clutch.
Once the correct diameter is loaded through the correct opening and the feed path is clear, the pencil should advance using its ordinary control.
