For paper that is strong and flexible, gently open it on a flat surface, smooth raised fold peaks with your fingertip, then leave it flat between clean blotters under evenly distributed weight. Do not reverse-bend folds or casually iron the sheet: weakened fibers can tear, and uncontrolled moisture can stain paper or move ink. Brittle, torn, valuable, badly rolled, or water-sensitive sheets should be assessed by a paper conservator.
Choose a method based on the paper’s condition
Check the sheet and its printing or writing before trying to flatten it. A treatment that may be reasonable for sturdy, unprinted craft paper can damage a brittle document or a sheet with water-sensitive ink or color.

| Method | When it may be appropriate | Main limit or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle dry smoothing and flat storage | Strong, flexible paper with light folds | May reduce a crease without making the sheet perfectly flat. National Archives guidance notes that this can make paper safer to place in a folder. |
| Controlled humidification followed by blotters and weight | Sound paper whose media can tolerate humidity | Uncontrolled moisture can cause stains, tidelines, mold, or ink migration. Library of Congress guidance limits do-it-yourself humidification to items generally in good condition without water-sensitive media. |
| Selective ironing | Specialized newspaper workflows after testing | Not a household default: heat can worsen wrinkles or permanently damage weakened fibers. See the Library of Congress newspaper guidance and National Postal Museum warning. |
| Professional conservation | Brittle, torn, valuable, badly rolled, or water-sensitive material | A conservator can assess the paper and its media before treatment. See Library of Congress guidance and National Archives guidance. |
How to flatten lightly folded, sturdy paper without moisture
- Place the sheet on a clean, flat work surface and open it gradually. Do not pull sharply at the fold.
- Keep the raised fold peaks facing up and smooth them gently with a fingertip. A bone folder can be used only for light, controlled handling of sound paper; do not use it to force a brittle crease.
- Put the sheet flat in a folder or between clean, dry protective sheets, then store it under an even, moderate load if needed. Avoid concentrated pressure that could emboss or mark the paper.
This dry approach may make a sheet easier to handle, but it cannot be counted on to erase every crease. National Archives describes gentle smoothing as a way to make paper safe to place in a folder, not a guarantee of perfect flatness: National Archives paper guidance.
When controlled humidification may help
Humidification uses carefully controlled moist air to relax paper fibers; it does not mean soaking or wetting the sheet. The National Archives explains that “Humidification is used to relax paper fibers and prepare them for flattening” in its conservation guidance. Because moisture can affect both paper and media, this is not a safe next step for every wrinkled page.

Do not humidify unsuitable material
Skip home humidification if the paper is brittle, cracking, torn, valuable, or printed or written with water-sensitive ink or color. The Library of Congress says DIY humidification is appropriate only for items generally in good condition and without water-sensitive media: paper care guidance. If you cannot tell whether the media will tolerate moisture, seek a conservator’s assessment rather than testing on the original.
Dry flat with clean blotters and even weight
When controlled humidification is appropriate, the sheet needs support as it dries. Place it between clean, absorbent blotters, change blotters if they become damp, and apply moderate, evenly distributed weight on a flat board. The National Park Service’s paper-flattening instructions describe a humidification container, periodic checks, blotter changes, and weighted drying. Do not let the paper become saturated or touch a wet towel or blotter.

Can you iron wrinkled paper?
Do not treat ironing as a general home remedy. The National Postal Museum warns: “Attempting to flatten the paper by bending in the reverse direction or by applying heat, will cause the weakened fibers to break or tear resulting in permanent damage.” Read its flattening guidance.

The Library of Congress discusses ironing only as a selective step in institutional newspaper treatment, with testing and immediate discontinuation if appearance worsens; it also notes that results vary with paper type and condition: newspaper care guidance. That does not establish ironing as safe for ordinary documents, artwork, or valuable paper.
What to do with a rolled document or paper that got wet
Rolled paper
Do not force a tight or brittle roll flat. If the sheet is sound and flexible, ease it open gradually on a flat surface and use gentle dry smoothing first. A badly rolled, cracking, or valuable document needs assessment by a paper conservator before humidification or pressure is applied.

Wet paper
Do not add more water to try to remove wrinkles. Moisture can create tidelines, stains, mold, or ink migration, so keep the sheet from becoming saturated and avoid contact with wet towels or blotters. For a valuable, fragile, or media-sensitive wet item, contact a conservator rather than attempting to flatten it at home.

When to stop and consult a paper conservator
- The paper cracks, flakes, or tears when handled.
- The sheet is valuable, historic, or important to preserve.
- It is badly rolled or has stubborn folds that would require force.
- Ink, paint, printing, or color may be sensitive to water or humidity.
There is no universal household treatment time or guaranteed success rate established by the cited guidance. The safe approach depends on the paper’s condition and media; when those are uncertain, avoid experimenting on the original.
