Lapidary is the craft of cutting, shaping, grinding, polishing and carving gemstones and other gem materials. A practitioner is called a lapidarist or gemstone cutter. You can begin with tumbling or cabbing, learn under supervision, and move into faceting or carving as your skills and equipment develop; a formal degree is not presented as a requirement.
What lapidary work involves
Lapidary transforms rough gem material into a finished form. Depending on the technique, that may mean smoothing a stone in a barrel, shaping a polished cabochon, cutting precise geometric faces, or carving a free-form design. The craft combines material knowledge with controlled work at saws, grinders and polishing equipment.

Choose a lapidary discipline
The four common beginner-facing approaches produce different results and call for different levels of control and equipment.
| Discipline | What it produces | Equipment and learning considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Tumbling | Rounded, smoothed and polished stones | A revolving barrel works rough stones with progressively finer abrasives. The International Gem Society describes tumbling as the simplest form of lapidary and an entry point requiring minimal equipment. |
| Cabbing | Smooth cabochons, often used in rings, pendants and brooches | Slabs are shaped and smoothed with saws and grinding and polishing equipment. It is a common starting point for learning hands-on shaping. |
| Faceting | Geometric faces planned to create a specific appearance and brilliance | Requires a faceting machine, a dop system and careful angle control. It introduces precision setup and repeatable cutting decisions. |
| Carving | Free-form relief or sculptural designs | Uses hand or powered diamond tools. The maker must control the tool and the material closely to shape a design. |
How to become a lapidarist
There is no single required credential in the cited career guidance. A practical route is to build material knowledge, get supervised instruction, learn a manageable process, then specialize and assemble work that demonstrates your skill.

- Learn gem material fundamentals. Study hardness, cleavage, crystal structure, colour, reflection and refraction. These concepts help you understand how a stone may respond to cutting and what finished effect you are aiming for.
- Find beginner instruction. Look for a lapidary class, club or workshop where an instructor can show you machine setup and safe working practice. The Gem and Jewellery Research & Training Institute workshop is specifically aimed at beginner lapidarists, gem traders, jewellery makers and gemology students, and covers faceting, cabochon cutting and polishing. The Tuscarora Lapidary Society education center uses member instructors and may recommend a basic tool list.
- Start with tumbling or cabbing. These are common entry points. Tumbling introduces the progression of abrasives; cabbing teaches you to shape and finish a stone through sawing, grinding, sanding and polishing.
- Add a specialist technique when you are ready. Before faceting, learn machine setup, dopping and angle control. Before carving, learn to use the relevant diamond tools and how the material behaves under them. Supervised practice is especially useful when introducing unfamiliar equipment.
- Document your finished work. Build a portfolio that shows the material, the finished form and the quality of your cutting or polish. Use it to decide which work you want to pursue and to show potential employers or clients what you can do.
Tools and materials in a lapidary workshop
A workshop’s equipment depends on the work being done; a beginner does not need to buy every machine at once. Equipment identified by the Goldsmiths’ Centre includes:

Safety is part of the technique
Cutting and grinding gemstones involves powered equipment and fine working conditions. A Federal TVET Agency manual calls for a clean, ventilated and well-lit workshop and describes these safety practices:
- Wear eye protection and the personal protective equipment required for the task.
- Tie back long hair; wear closed shoes rather than open-toed footwear.
- Remove loose jewellery and avoid operating equipment when impaired.
- Keep the workspace clean, ventilated and well lit.
- Use, inspect and maintain machines correctly, following the machine’s operating guidance and your instructor’s procedures.
Do not treat protective equipment or workshop setup as optional extras. The Goldsmiths’ Centre specifically emphasizes adherence to industry health and safety requirements, including the personal protective equipment needed when cutting gemstones.

Where lapidary skills can lead
Lapidarists may work for gemstone suppliers or become self-employed. Independent work can include cutting stones on commission for jewellers, making original designs, or selling finished work through galleries, retail spaces, craft fairs or directly to customers.
Those routes require more than cutting ability. Commission work depends on understanding a client’s needs and delivering a suitable stone; selling original work also brings business, finance, marketing and interpersonal responsibilities. A portfolio helps make your style and capabilities visible while you decide which route fits your goals.
