The best forest sculptures make the woods part of the experience: they may use fallen or gathered material, echo the shapes of plants, play with light, or give a landscape a layer of history. There is no authoritative ranking, so this is an editorial selection of works with distinct, clearly documented ways of connecting art and nature—not a numbered competition.
Forest sculptures that make nature part of the artwork
These works show several different approaches to art in the forest: shaping material from the site, translating woodland forms into metal, using light to suggest habitat, and placing history among trees. Some are individual works; others are encountered within a sculpture park or trail. Check venue information before travelling, since access and programming can change.
Wood Line by Andy Goldsworthy — Presidio, San Francisco
Completed in 2011, Wood Line winds for 1,200 feet through a eucalyptus grove. The Presidio says Goldsworthy made it from eucalyptus branches gathered through the park’s forest-rejuvenation program. The line follows the ground and leads visitors through the trees, so the material and the route both belong to the site. The Presidio attributes to Goldsworthy the phrase “draws the place,” a fitting description of a work that responds to its setting rather than standing apart from it. Their upright shapes suggest shoots rising from the earth, while mirror-polished stainless-steel forms resemble fungi. Wild described his aim as wanting “the work to feel both natural and unnatural at the same time, like a strange forest of brightly-coloured geometric trees adorned with reflective fungi.” The quotation appears on the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust’s page for Gathering.
Cloak by Jeremy Blincoe and Michael Van Dam — National Arboretum Canberra
Set in a mature Himalayan cedar forest, Cloak draws on the image of hollow old-growth trees. The National Arboretum Canberra describes those hollows as habitat supporting ecosystems. The artists’ stainless-steel chain construction lets light pass through its gaps, giving the work a shimmering, partly transparent appearance among the trees. Nissen Hut by Rachel Whiteread — Dalby Forest, England
Not every forest sculpture takes its meaning from plants or wildlife. Forestry England identifies Whiteread’s Nissen Hut as a permanent public sculpture in the heart of Dalby Forest. Commissioned to mark the Forestry Commission centenary in 2019, it also forms part of the UK First World War centenary arts programme 14-18NOW. Forest sculpture parks and trails worth exploring
A forest sculpture can be more than a single object: trails and outdoor collections let visitors meet different works along a route. Forestry England says the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail has welcomed visitors since 1986, artists have created works in Grizedale Forest since 1977, and Kielder Forest is home to more than 20 artworks and architectural installations. Chianti Sculpture Park — Tuscany, Italy
The park describes itself as a permanent exhibition of contemporary installations and sculptures based on the integration of nature and art. Artists have made site-specific works in its woods using varied techniques and materials. One example, The Bridge, is 19 metres long and made from rusted iron bars; the park says the bars look like wood from a distance. Explore the park’s description of its sculptures.

Price Sculpture Forest describes an outdoor collection among century-old trees and native understory. Its official visitor page states that admission is free and offers a free self-guided tour accessed from a visitor’s phone. Look closely—and make your own study
When visiting a forest sculpture, notice what changes as you move around it: whether its material repeats a nearby texture, how the work frames a tree or clearing, and whether light or touch alters the encounter. Forestry England suggests bringing a camera, sketching or painting, and filling a sketchbook with woodland scenes. A landscape sketchbook can be a simple way to record shapes, contrasts and compositions you might otherwise walk past.
