More than 20,000 ancient rock carvings are reported across Helan Mountain in China’s Ningxia region, and weathering is fading some images while rain-related freeze-thaw cycles crack and peel the rock. A conservation effort combines field surveys and documentation with physical protections, but the available reporting does not quantify an annual loss rate or measure how effective each treatment has been.
Where are the carvings, and how old are they?
The carvings are at Helan Mountain in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region of northwest China—not at the better-known Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing. A Xinhua report updated August 2, 2025, says the mountain stretches 250 kilometers and is home to more than 20,000 carvings, which it dates approximately to between 10,000 and 3,000 years ago. That is a broad estimate for the collection, not an independently established date for every image.
The reported subjects include faces, animals, handprints, herding, hunting and rituals. Some images may invite interpretation, but their meaning is not always certain. For example, Zhang Jianguo, deputy director of the site administration, suggested that a pair of handprints may represent “me” and “you,” carved to seal an agreement. That is his interpretation, not a settled reading.
Helan’s rock art should not be confused with Dazu’s carvings. UNESCO describes Dazu as a separate site in Chongqing, with carvings dating from the ninth to 13th centuries and Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian subject matter.

Why are the carvings deteriorating?
Weathering fades images
Exposure to weather can gradually fade or erase carved images, according to the Xinhua report. The report does not give a rate of loss or identify how many carvings have disappeared.
Rain and freeze-thaw cycles damage the rock
Rainwater can contribute to freeze-thaw cycles: water enters cracks, freezes and expands, then thaws. Repeated cycles can widen fractures and cause the rock surface to crack or peel, threatening the carvings on it.

What are conservation teams doing?
Surveying and documenting known and newly found carvings
The latest survey began in 2020 as a follow-up to a 2000–2003 census. By the time of the August 2025 report, teams had surveyed more than 12 square kilometers in and around the park. The survey was scheduled to continue through the end of 2025; that schedule alone does not establish whether the work has since been completed.

Field teams photograph carvings and record their locations. The work is intended to assess the condition of previously documented images, find and document additional ones, and support digital archiving and future protection. Xu Xiaolong, a staff member of the Helan Mountain rock art administration, said the survey assesses known carvings’ preservation status and helps identify and document new examples.

Stabilizing damaged rock faces
From 2012 to 2017, conservation teams reinforced 20 carved rock faces with cracks, according to the report. The described approach involved injecting organic materials into fissures. The report does not provide a treatment evaluation or establish how durable the reinforcement has been.
Reducing exposure and monitoring conditions
Other measures described include flood-prevention dams, protective fencing, a nanomaterial surface coating intended to protect against water and sun, and installed monitors. The site administration also develops conservation plans intended to balance tourism with preservation. The report describes these measures but does not provide comparative results showing how much each one has reduced damage.

What protections does the site have?
The State Council designated the site a major national cultural heritage unit in 1996, and the site administration was established in 2002. In 2003, a city-level protection regulation was adopted; Xinhua describes it as China’s first dedicated rock-art preservation legislation.

Xinhua reported that the park received 900,000 visitors in the year preceding its August 2025 article. That is a figure for the preceding year, not a visitor count for 2026.

What is still unknown?
- The available reporting does not quantify how many carvings are disappearing each year.
- It does not establish whether the survey scheduled through 2025 was completed.
- It gives no independent outcome data for the reinforcement, coating, dams, fencing or monitoring measures.
Those limits matter: deterioration is documented, and conservation measures are underway, but a precise forecast of loss or a proven ranking of treatments cannot be drawn from the reported information.
