There is no single best paper for every graphite or charcoal drawing. Choose by matching the surface to your marks and scale: smoother paper can make fine detail easier to control, while more textured paper gives charcoal and other dry media more tooth. Also consider how well the sheet tolerates layering and erasing, and whether it comes in a useful format.
How to match paper to your drawing

What tooth means for graphite and charcoal
Tooth is the texture that helps dry media catch on the paper. A more textured surface can hold charcoal, while a subtler texture may suit controlled graphite marks. There is no single ideal amount: the useful surface depends on how you draw, the marks you want, and the scale of the work. Reworking, layering, and erasing
If you expect to revise a drawing or build up multiple layers, pay attention to surface strength as well as texture. Paper descriptions can help narrow the choice, but they do not establish how a particular sheet will feel with your pressure, tools, or eraser. When possible, try samples before committing to a larger quantity.
