The best first camera depends on what you want to photograph. For learning still photography and making clear records of paintings, the Canon EOS R50 is a strong all-round starting point; the Canon EOS R10 suits buyers who want more hands-on controls and action capability; and the Sony ZV-E10 is designed around video and vlogging. These five options are editorial recommendations, not a universal ranking: recent guides disagree on which camera should come first.

How to choose a first camera

Start with what you plan to make pictures of. If you want to document finished paintings, work in progress, studio details, or everyday subjects, prioritize a viewfinder, comfortable controls, dependable autofocus, and a lens that covers a useful range. For painting documentation, consistent light, a steady camera, and keeping the camera square to the artwork matter at least as much as choosing a particular body.

For video demonstrations or studio vlogs, screen articulation, microphone options, and recording modes matter more. There is no source-supported winner for every new photographer: Digital Camera World favors the Canon EOS R100, Amateur Photographer names the Canon EOS R50 overall, and MPB picks the Canon EOS R10 in its 2026 beginner guides.

Budget for a complete kit

Compare the price of a usable kit, not just the camera body. A kit lens is usually a general-purpose zoom that lets you start shooting straight away. Also check whether the listing includes the lens, battery, charger, and other items you need; a memory card, adapter, or extra lens may be separate. Bundle contents and prices can change, so verify the specific listing before buying.

Choose a camera you can learn on

Manual controls help beginners understand exposure settings rather than relying on automatic modes for everything. When comparing bodies, try the grip and menus if you can, and check whether the screen moves in a way that suits your shooting position. For stills, an electronic viewfinder is useful in bright conditions and can make framing feel more deliberate.

Think beyond the first lens

Your lens affects the pictures you can make as much as the camera body. Digital Camera World editor James Artaius puts it this way: “I’ve tested hundreds of cameras (and helped train as many photographers since I started teaching in 2014!) but choosing the camera is only half the story; the lens you use is every bit as important – if not more so.” A system with a wider compatible lens choice gives you more options as your interests develop. Sony E mount has a broad selection of native and third-party lenses. Canon RF selection is described as relatively limited in the R10 guide, although older EF and EF-S lenses can be adapted with an adapter.

Five beginner cameras and who each suits

This is a use-case shortlist, not a claim that one model wins every comparison. The cited guides describe the models as beginner options, but features, bundles, and availability can vary by market and listing.

Camera Best suited to Useful strengths Trade-offs to consider
Canon EOS R50 First camera for stills and mixed photo/video use Amateur Photographer names it its overall beginner pick. It has an APS-C sensor, an electronic viewfinder, and RF/RF-S mount. Check the current kit and price. RTINGS describes Canon RF lens selection as limited.
Canon EOS R10 Learning camera controls, general shooting, and action MPB names it its overall beginner pick. Its guide highlights easy-to-understand menus, manual dials, autofocus tracking, and 4K 60p recording; RTINGS describes it as well-rounded. MPB says the RF lens lineup is fairly limited. It may cost more than entry-level alternatives.
Sony a6400 Stills-first buyers who value lens options It has an electronic viewfinder and strong autofocus; Sony E mount offers many native and third-party lenses. Its design is older, the screen is small, and it lacks in-body stabilization. It is not necessarily a low-cost choice.
Fujifilm X-M5 Portable creative shooting and video This compact APS-C option has a Film Simulation control, and RTINGS describes its autofocus as updated. It has no viewfinder or in-body stabilization, which may be inconvenient for a traditional stills learner.
Sony ZV-E10 Beginner vlogging and video Amateur Photographer names it its beginner vlogging pick. RTINGS notes a fully articulated screen, updated internal microphone, and detachable windscreen. It has no viewfinder in Amateur Photographer’s comparison, so stills-focused buyers may prefer another option.

Which camera fits your photography?

For painting photos and everyday stills: Canon EOS R50

The R50 is a sensible place to start if you want a conventional stills camera with a viewfinder and the option to record video. Amateur Photographer lists it with a 24.2MP APS-C sensor. Its guide’s displayed prices were $729/£749 for the body only and $849/£859 with an 18–45mm lens; these are guide snapshots, not guaranteed current prices, and the body-only figure does not include that kit lens.

For photographing a painting, use a tripod or otherwise steady support, position the camera parallel to the artwork, and light the surface evenly. A kit zoom is convenient for general shooting, but avoid using a wide-angle setting from close range if it visibly distorts the painting’s edges. The camera choice cannot compensate for glare, uneven light, or a tilted camera position.

For more control and faster subjects: Canon EOS R10

Choose the R10 if you want manual dials and tracking autofocus while learning, or expect to photograph subjects that move. MPB’s 2026 guide names it its beginner pick, citing accessible menus and 4K 60p; RTINGS also describes it as a capable all-rounder. Consider the RF lens range before committing to the system, and compare the full kit cost with the R50 rather than relying on body prices alone.

For lens choice: Sony a6400

The a6400 is worth comparing if you want an electronic viewfinder and access to Sony E-mount lenses, including third-party choices. Amateur Photographer lists it at 24MP APS-C and displayed a guide price of $748/£749; the guide price is a snapshot and should be checked against the current listing. Its older design, small screen, and lack of in-body stabilization are meaningful compromises, particularly if you shoot handheld in low light or want a screen that is easy to see from unusual angles.

For portable creative work: Fujifilm X-M5

The X-M5 combines a compact APS-C body with a Film Simulation control. Fujifilm film simulations can be useful if you want attractive JPEGs with less editing, but this body is not the most conventional learning camera: it has no viewfinder and no in-body stabilization. If you prefer composing through a viewfinder or want stabilization in the camera body, compare another option before choosing it.

For studio video and vlogging: Sony ZV-E10

The ZV-E10 is the most video-oriented choice in this shortlist. Its fully articulated screen can help when framing yourself, and the cited RTINGS guide notes its internal microphone and detachable windscreen. Since it has no viewfinder in Amateur Photographer’s comparison, a beginner whose priority is still photography should weigh that missing feature rather than buying it just because it is marketed toward creators.

Sensor formats, stabilization, and editing

APS-C and Micro Four Thirds

Amateur Photographer describes APS-C and Micro Four Thirds as formats that generally suit beginners. APS-C sensors are larger, but cameras built around them can be larger and more expensive. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is one Micro Four Thirds example in its guide, listed at 20MP; its shortlist also includes the R50 at 24.2MP APS-C, Fujifilm X-T30 III at 26.1MP APS-C, Nikon Z50 II at 20MP DX/APS-C, and Sony a6400 at 24MP APS-C. These are model specifications, not measures of which camera makes better pictures.

Stabilization is not the same on every camera

In-body image stabilization can help reduce camera shake with compatible lenses and handheld shooting, while some lenses have their own stabilization. The X-M5 and a6400 lack in-body stabilization according to the cited comparisons. Do not assume a camera has a feature because another model in the same range does; check the body and lens specifications for the exact configuration you plan to buy.

Decide how much editing you want

If you enjoy adjusting color and contrast after shooting, a camera that records files suited to editing may fit your workflow. If you would rather use attractive images with minimal post-processing, Fujifilm’s Film Simulation options may appeal. Neither approach is compulsory: choose based on whether editing feels like part of the creative process or an extra chore.

When a different camera may make more sense

If the five options above exceed your budget, Digital Camera World recommends the Canon EOS R100 as a budget-first alternative. Treat it as a separate option rather than assuming it has the same features as the R50 or R10. MPB’s guide also discusses used DSLR models including the Nikon D3500 and Nikon D610. Used cameras may offer another route into photography, but condition, included accessories, lens compatibility, and availability depend on the individual listing.

Before choosing any model, check these points against the exact kit you intend to buy:

  • Does the total price include a lens that suits your first subjects?
  • Do you want an electronic viewfinder, a fully articulating screen, or both?
  • Will you mostly photograph still subjects, moving subjects, or video?
  • Are stabilization and autofocus features appropriate for how you shoot?
  • Are compatible lenses available for the system and budget you expect to have later?
  • Does the camera produce the kind of files and in-camera looks you want to work with?

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
