An old bicycle can become a garden focal point, a flower-carrier display, or—using its wheels—a trellis feature. The easiest approach is to use the bike as visual structure and keep plants in removable, well-drained containers. That makes watering and seasonal changes simpler without treating the bicycle itself as a planter or tested support.
Choose a bicycle-garden idea that suits your space

Use the whole bicycle as a garden focal point
Set the bicycle where its outline is visible, then use pots to provide color around it. A grouping beside the frame or near a wheel can make the bike feel integrated with the garden without requiring plants to grow in its parts. Removable pots also let you adjust the display as flowers fade, seasons change, or the planting needs different light.

A basket can suggest a flower carrier, but do not assume it is watertight or suitable for holding soil. Put plants in a separate pot or planter that fits securely inside or beside the basket. This keeps the planting removable for watering, drainage, and replacement.

Choose a container large enough for the mature plant, able to hold soil without spilling, and with adequate drainage. Never reuse a container that held products toxic to plants or people. Turn old wheels into a trellis feature
A wheel can provide a distinctive circular element in a trellis project. The Scouts Association’s Make upcycled planters activity describes a bicycle trellis and lists old wheels, wooden posts, nuts, and bolts as materials.
Trellises are useful for climbing crops including pole beans, peas, cucumbers, melons, and tomatoes. Virginia Cooperative Extension explains that vertical supports can contain sprawling growth and improve air movement through foliage in Vertical Gardening Using Trellises, Stakes, and Cages.

Treat the wheel trellis as an inspiration project, not a universal construction plan. The cited activity does not establish safe mounting dimensions or load limits for every wheel, post, soil, or wind condition. Choose supports suitable for your location, secure parts that could fall, and do not assume an old wheel or bicycle frame has been tested as structural garden hardware.

A clean, refreshed frame can help a bicycle read as garden art. UCANR lists cleaning, sanding, paint, and UV varnish among possible supplies for repurposed garden art and cautions that rust may eventually show through if painted over. Its advice is general rather than a bicycle-specific coating specification.

Identify the frame material and follow the coating manufacturer’s instructions for outdoor use and surface preparation. Remove dirt and loose material as directed by the product label; do not paint over rust expecting the finish to stop corrosion.
