A large-format book press uses a screw to drive a platen down toward a bed, compressing the book, paper, or other work placed between them. Paul’s build, featured by Hackaday, was designed for bookbinding or printing and also described as useful for pressing water from handmade paper. It is one particular, CAD- and CNC-assisted project—not a dimensioned plan that can be copied from the article alone.
What a standing book press does
A standing press applies pressure from above. Its basic parts are vertical pillars, a stout screw, a platen, and a bed. The work sits on the bed; turning the screw lowers the platen and compresses the material. A historical technical description in the scanned book Bookbinding describes those components in the same terms.

That simple mechanism can serve several kinds of work, but suitability depends on the press’s size, construction, and the material being pressed. Hackaday describes Paul’s large-format press as intended for bookbinding or printing and notes that it can also squeeze water from handmade paper. That is a description of this project’s uses, not a guarantee that any book press is appropriate for every printing process.

What is known about Paul’s large-format build
In its March 3, 2020 article, Hackaday describes Paul’s large-format press as designed in CAD, with many parts fabricated on a CNC router. The article characterizes construction as straightforward and points to a project video for a step-by-step guide.
The indexed article text does not provide a complete bill of materials or verified dimensions. That means you cannot reliably infer the press’s capacity, reproduce its exact parts, or compare its working area with another press from the available description. CAD and CNC were part of Paul’s build, but the article says those methods are not strictly required for the overall design.

How to choose a build approach
Start with the work you want to press, then choose a design whose plans establish the necessary dimensions and construction details. The large-format project and a separate traditional wooden press plan are not interchangeable: the latter’s specifications should not be treated as measurements for Paul’s build.

The available Hackaday description does not establish Paul’s platen or bed dimensions.
- Fabrication access: Paul’s project used CAD and CNC routing for many parts. A traditional woodworking plan may be a better fit if you want to follow a plan built around conventional joinery and listed materials.
- Screw and mounting: The separate Darbin Orvar plan specifies a heavy-duty, single-lead Acme-thread press screw. If sourcing a book press screw, confirm its thread and mounting compatibility with the design you are actually building.
- Frame and platen materials: Choose materials according to the selected plan and intended load. Do not assume another press’s dimensions or material choices transfer to a different design.
A separate wooden press plan, with its own specifications
Darbin Orvar’s Bookbinding Press Building Plan describes a traditional wooden design using half-blind dovetails and a heavy-duty, single-lead Acme-thread screw. It calls for 2-inch (5 cm) wood; the maker used white oak, but the page does not establish that oak is mandatory. The plan also specifies a 1/4-inch aluminum or steel component and screws for the mechanism.

Those are specifications for the Darbin Orvar design, not universal requirements for book presses and not dimensions for Paul’s large-format build. Darbin Orvar says the plan includes cut lists, step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and images. Its separate book press article and accompanying video cover screw mechanics, thread types, and construction.

Keeping the work centered beneath the screw helps place pressure where it is intended. In The Art of Bookbinding (1897), Joseph W. Zaehnsdorf advises centering books under the screw with pressing boards. For mixed sizes, the text recommends putting the largest book at the bottom and using blocks or pressing boards between sizes so the screw remains centered. This is historical workshop practice, not current conservation guidance.

Book presses and printing: a historical example
Press mechanisms have also been adapted to change the area printed with each pull. The American Bookbinders Museum’s account of the Imperial Arming and Printing Press says its lever system increased the printed area per pull from half a sheet to a full sheet. That figure describes the historical Imperial press; it does not indicate the performance of Paul’s DIY project.
