Maya Blue is a remarkably durable pigment made by combining indigo with palygorskite, a clay mineral. Modern laboratories have recreated Maya Blue-like material through several documented methods. Separately, a 2023 report describes Yucatec sculptor Luis May Ku recovering a traditional process—but the crucial recipe details were not made public, so that account cannot be independently replicated from the report.
What Maya Blue is made of
Maya Blue is an organic-inorganic pigment: indigo supplies the color, while palygorskite provides the mineral component. It is not simply a blue mineral, nor is it ordinary indigo paint. Archaeological and materials-science literature associates the pigment with Mesoamerican pottery, murals, and sculpture, particularly in the pre-Columbian period. The USGS publication record describes research into likely palygorskite sources used for Maya Blue.
The combination is associated with unusual resistance to acids, alkalis, solvents, and weathering. That durability is well documented, but it does not mean the pigment is indestructible; its performance depends on the material and exposure conditions.

How scientists recreated Maya Blue in the laboratory
Laboratory syntheses were described well before the 2023 story about May Ku. A review of Maya Blue research surveys several approaches, which differ in how indigo is prepared and brought together with the clay. These are experimental routes to synthetic analogues, not proof that any one method duplicates every ancient workshop’s practice.
| Laboratory route | How the materials are brought together | What the method represents |
|---|---|---|
| Indoxylacetate route | Palygorskite is soaked with indoxylacetate. | A chemical precursor is used with the clay. |
| Vat-dyeing route | Leucoindigo is used in a water suspension with palygorskite. | A dyeing-style process using a reduced form of indigo. |
| Grinding route | Indigo is ground with powdered palygorskite. | A direct mechanical mixing approach. |
These methods are summarized in the review chapter “The Maya Blue Pigment.” The cited summary does not establish which route is best for artists, nor whether a commercial pigment reproduces archaeological Maya Blue.

What may happen between indigo and the clay
A 2007 review proposes that carbonyl oxygen atoms in indigo interact with aluminum sites at the clay surface. It also discusses the possibility that some indigo oxidizes into dehydroindigo during preparation, with a mixture of indigo and dehydroindigo contributing to color variation. These are proposed explanations, not a final, universally accepted structural model: a later review notes that the precise interaction mechanism remains debated.
This uncertainty does not undermine the central identification of Maya Blue as a pigment pairing indigo with palygorskite. It means the detailed account of how the organic colorant and mineral interact is still subject to scientific discussion.

What Luis May Ku recreated—and what remains unknown
In a March 14, 2023 report, Mexico News Daily journalist Mark Viales described sculptor Luis May Ku’s effort to recover a traditional process. The account says May Ku searched for Ch’oj, identified in the report as Indigofera suffruticosa, found the plant in a garden in Cobá, and experimented with extracting its indigo and adding minerals. The report says researchers in Italy and Mexico confirmed the components in a sample.
May Ku did not disclose the crucial process details, and the news account does not provide a complete recipe or enough methodological information for independent replication. It is therefore important to distinguish this reported revival of a traditional process from the earlier, documented laboratory syntheses. May Ku described his achievement to Viales as “the return of a pigment that had not been seen in the world for almost 200 years in its traditional form.” That is his characterization; it does not mean scientists had never made a Maya Blue analogue.

What archaeology says about Maya Blue’s use
Maya Blue has been found in material contexts that include pottery, murals, and sculpture. A 2008 study reported direct evidence for production in an offering vessel from the sacred cenote at Chichén Itzá, examining Maya Blue alongside copal incense. The authors proposed that pigment formation itself may have been part of ritual activity. The Library of Congress record summarizes that offering-vessel context.
That is an important case study, not evidence that all Maya Blue was made for offerings or used only in ceremonies. Archaeological context can illuminate a particular practice without defining every purpose the pigment served.
