A hand-made drum carder prepares wool by opening and spreading fibers into a soft batt that can be drafted for spinning. It does not wash fleece, remove all debris, or turn wool into yarn: the result depends on starting with clean, reasonably opened fiber and feeding it through the teeth in thin layers.
What a drum carder does
A common drum carder has a small feed drum, often called the licker-in, and a larger main drum. As wool passes between their carding cloths, the drums’ different surface speeds and opposing tooth movement pull the fibers apart, separate them, and arrange them across the main drum. Louët Support explains this mechanism in its carding guide.
When enough fiber has accumulated, the layer is lifted from the main drum as a batt: a soft, distributed mat for spinning or felting. It is not combed top, finished yarn, or necessarily a perfectly parallel preparation. Carding can also blend colors or fiber types, which is useful for intentional blends or evening out fleece variation.

That blending action has a downside: carding can distribute short bits and vegetable matter through the fiber instead of sorting them out. A carder is not a cleaner and does not replace washing or careful fleece sorting.

How to card wool with a hand-made drum carder
- Prepare the wool. Use clean, reasonably opened fiber. Tease compacted locks apart or use a suitable picker to loosen fleece before carding. Badly matted or felted wool is unlikely to feed smoothly.
- Feed thin layers. Add a little fiber at a time across the feed drum. Brother Drum Carder advises feeding small amounts, preferably in thin layers, in its operating instructions. Overloading can jam a carder, bend teeth, or tear fibers.
- Let the teeth draw the fiber in. Turn the handle steadily without forcing it. If a clump catches or the mechanism jams, stop and remove or reverse the obstruction rather than pushing harder. Keep fingers and knuckles away from the sharp wire teeth.
- Build the batt gradually. Continue feeding evenly until the main drum holds the amount you want. Capacity and the resulting texture depend on the drum, carding-cloth density, fiber type, and preparation; there is no established universal yield for the homemade example.
- Lift off the fiber carefully. Some designs use a doffer or take-up tool to lift the batt from the teeth. Accessories are not universal, so use only a tool suited to the particular machine.
- Draft and spin. Draw fiber from the batt into a strand and spin it into yarn using your usual method. The batt is a preparation for spinning, not a finished or combed product.
How a drum carder differs from other fiber preparations

Woolmakers’ drum-carder guide describes the drum carder as a faster way to handle larger amounts than hand carding. Fiber, machine design, and technique affect the actual result, so that guidance should not be read as a measured speed comparison for every setup.
Choosing carding cloth for the fiber
TPI means teeth per inch. In Woolmakers’ guidance for its own range, lower TPI means more widely spaced teeth and is suited to coarser wool and opening fleece; higher TPI is intended for finer fibers. Its guide calls 72 TPI an all-round option in that range and describes 120 TPI for fine fibers such as merino or alpaca. These recommendations are supplier-specific, not universal rules for every machine or fiber. Check the carder maker’s guidance before choosing cloth.

What the homemade example does—and does not—tell you
The video titled “Hand-Made Drum Carder Gets Wool Ready For Spinning” shows a maker building a prototype after finding carding time-consuming while his partner spun wool. It is an example build, not a controlled test. The available description does not establish that machine’s dimensions, tooth density, throughput, cost, measured performance, or safety testing, so those details cannot be inferred from the title alone. The video’s mention of a price around 400 euros was tied to the period of that build and is not a current market comparison. Watch the titled video.

Safety when using a handmade carder
Carding cloth has sharp wire teeth. Keep hands clear while feeding and removing fiber, stop before dealing with jams, and follow the instructions for the specific build. Do not assume a homemade design has been safety-certified or tested. A warning that a particular instruction sheet’s product is not designed to be motorized applies to that product only; it is not a general rule for every drum carder.
