King Bob leads a group of Minion-inspired robots by sensing the world and broadcasting his movement commands. Simpler followers mimic those commands over radio, avoiding the need for each robot to carry its own computer-vision system—but the arrangement can go awry when a follower meets an obstacle the leader did not.
How King Bob leads the other robots
Thomas Locatelli, creator of the Electo YouTube channel, built the robots described in a Hackster.io feature published around the lead-up to Despicable Me 4. In the reported setup, King Bob is the visually capable leader: he can respond to visual stimuli, including following a banana held by Locatelli.
The control idea is leader-follower mimicry. King Bob’s Arduino Nano generates motor commands—for example, moving forward a specified amount or turning left 90 degrees—and relays them by radio. The other robots receive and mimic those commands rather than interpreting the scene for themselves. The feature does not give measured accuracy, radio range, latency, or success rates.

Why use one capable leader and simpler followers?
Giving every robot its own vision hardware would distribute sensing across the group, but it would also add hardware and complexity to each follower. Locatelli considered GPS tracking and equipping every robot with computer-vision hardware before settling on radio-relayed movement commands. In his chosen design, King Bob handles visual perception while followers copy his actions.
That economy has a coordination cost: a follower acts on the leader’s commands without necessarily sharing his view of its local surroundings. An obstacle or small movement error can put it off course; as differences accumulate, the robots can drift apart and become clumsy. The feature describes this qualitatively, not as a measured comparison between control methods.

King Bob’s reported hardware
The feature describes a 3D-printed, painted shell containing these components:
- An Arduino Nano development board for generating motor commands.
- A radio transceiver module to send commands to the followers.
- Two drive motors and a battery.
- A single-board computer and camera for computer vision.
The report does not identify exact component models or provide wiring diagrams, a complete parts list, printer or filament details, a software repository, or build instructions. Those details should not be inferred from the component categories alone.

What the project demonstrates—and what it doesn’t
King Bob is a practical example of offloading sensing to a leader so that followers can be simpler. It also shows the limitation of copying motion without independently understanding the route: shared commands do not guarantee that every robot will experience the same path. The Hackster feature presents a project report, not a controlled benchmark, so it does not establish how this approach compares numerically with GPS coordination or vision-equipped followers.
