The best 3D-printing gift depends first on whether the recipient owns an FDM/FFF filament printer, an MSLA resin printer, or no printer at all. For a known setup, choose a compatible consumable or tool; for an unknown setup, favor broadly useful measuring tools or a creative 3D pen over a model-specific upgrade. This guide updates the 2024 holiday framing: its gift categories remain useful, but seasonal deals and model recommendations from 2024 are not current buying advice.
Start with the recipient’s printing process
FDM/FFF printers melt filament and build an object layer by layer. MSLA printers use liquid resin cured by light and require post-processing. The distinction determines which materials and accessories will actually be useful: filament gifts suit FDM owners, while resin and wash-and-cure equipment suit MSLA owners. If you are unsure which kind of printer they have, check the exact model before buying a consumable or upgrade.
The Hackster guide’s 2024 examples compare printers using factors such as ease of use, build volume, enclosure, material capability, pixel size, and resin build area. Those remain sensible criteria for matching a printer to a recipient, but specific models and prices in a seasonal 2024 guide should not be taken as current recommendations. A printer can also require assembly, calibration, tuning, software setup, or post-processing; consider whether the recipient wants that hands-on work.

Useful gifts for FDM filament-printer owners
Filament: practical when you know the printer
Filament is a straightforward consumable gift for someone with a known FDM printer. Hackster recommends PLA when the buyer is uncertain about material, while noting PETG as an option for printers without enclosures and ABS or ASA for enclosed printers. More specialized filaments can require particular hardware or setup.
Before ordering, verify the printer’s supported material, nozzle and setup requirements, and spool diameter. Hackster says almost all consumer printers use 1.75 mm filament, but that is not a guarantee for a particular machine. A spool of 1.75 mm PLA is a sensible choice only after checking fit and compatibility.

Digital calipers: a versatile tool for making and troubleshooting
Digital calipers help measure existing parts, check the dimensions of a print, and work through design or printer-tuning problems. They are a useful option for hobbyists who model functional objects as well as those who simply want to compare a printed part with its intended dimensions. Hackster suggests ordinary digital calipers for most hobbyists and identifies Mitutoyo and Starrett as higher-end brands.
Active filament dryer: for moisture management
Some filaments can be affected by moisture exposure, making an active heated dryer a candidate for someone who prints moisture-sensitive materials or wants help managing filament storage. Hackster distinguishes these from passive desiccant-based storage products and names the Creality Dryer Box 2.0 as an example. Treat a dryer as a moisture-management accessory, not a universal requirement; check that the product suits the recipient’s materials and spools.

Heat-set inserts: for functional-part designers
A useful bundle for someone who designs functional parts can include M3 brass heat-set inserts, matching screws, and an insertion tool. The inserts are heated into thermoplastic to create threaded attachment points. Tools may use a press-style mechanism or a soldering-iron-style tip; confirm the insert size and tool compatibility before choosing the set.
Multi-material systems: only for an exact compatible printer
A multi-material add-on can let a printer use multiple filaments in one job, useful for multi-color prints or projects that combine materials. Hackster names Bambu Lab AMS and AMS Lite, Prusa MMU3, Anycubic ACE Pro, and Creality CFS as examples. These systems are not interchangeable: check the recipient’s exact printer brand and model, and confirm the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying.

Gifts for MSLA resin-printer owners
Resin: match the consumable to the printer
Resin is the consumable for an MSLA printer. Check the recipient’s printer and the resin’s stated compatibility rather than assuming any bottle will suit their workflow.
Wash-and-cure equipment: account for print size and workspace
Resin prints need washing and full UV curing after printing. A combined wash-and-cure machine can simplify those steps; separate washing and curing devices are another option. Match the equipment to the owner’s largest prints and available workspace. Resin work also involves a messier handling process than simply changing a filament spool, so consider whether the recipient has a suitable place and workflow for it.

For someone who does not own a printer
A 3D printing pen offers a creative introduction without buying a desktop printer. ASME’s 2024 engineering gift guide included the 3Doodler PRO+ 3D Pen Set for architects, artists, designers, and engineers. A pen is a hand-operated creative tool, not a 3D printer: it does not provide the same computer-designed, machine-built workflow. ASME’s guide said that more than 2.5 million 3Doodlers had been shipped; that is the guide’s product-description figure, not an independently audited count.
When a printer itself is the gift
A printer is a higher-cost, higher-commitment gift than filament or a tool. Before choosing one, think about the recipient’s experience, the kind of projects they want to make, and the time and space they can give the machine. FDM build volume affects the size of objects a printer can produce; resin printers are often considered for detail, with pixel size and build area among the comparison factors. Neither label alone settles which machine is right for a particular person.
Setup burden and footprint matter as much as headline capability. ASME’s 2024 guide used the Anycubic Kobra 2 Max as an illustration of a large-build-area printer, while noting assembly, calibration, and workshop-space demands. That example is not a current product recommendation. A large build area can be valuable for large projects, but it also means a bigger machine and more room to accommodate it.
Holiday offers are especially time-sensitive. Manufactur3D’s November 29, 2024 guide listed printer, material, and accessory promotions with November and December 2024 dates; those offers have expired. The historical gift mix included complete printers, kits, filament, print plates, and cameras, but current stock, prices, and model revisions are not established here. Check current product details and availability before purchasing.
