The bike-riding skeleton appears to pedal itself, but its power is concealed in a bomb-shaped sidecar: an electric scooter drivetrain turns the rig’s wheel, while the bicycle’s fixed-gear setup makes its pedals rotate. It is a maker-built mechanical illusion, not a store-bought animated decoration—and “best Halloween prop” is an opinionated headline, not an independently established ranking.
How does the skeleton bicycle move?
The life-size skeleton is passive. It sits on a bicycle, with its hands attached to the handlebars and its feet to the pedals. The bicycle is pushed by a powered wheel concealed in the sidecar, which is described as a dressed-up barrel shaped like a bomb. Because the bicycle is fixed-gear, its pedals turn as its rear wheel spins, making the skeleton look as if it is pedaling.

Hackster’s overview describes an electric scooter motor in the sidecar driving its wheel. Hackaday likewise reports a repurposed electric scooter drivetrain hidden there, with a third wheel helping the bicycle remain upright. The bicycle itself does not provide propulsion.
What controls the steering and drive?
Ordinary radio-control equipment handles the movement. A speed controller manages the drive, and a steering servo turns the bicycle’s handlebars through a linkage. The servo is mounted to the frame, according to Hackaday. The result is a remote-controlled moving display whose steering and propulsion are concealed within the overall construction.

What makes the skeleton look like a rider?
Hackaday reports that the maker started with an off-the-shelf skeleton and altered its joints to give it more flexibility. Its hands were attached to the handlebars and its feet to the pedals. The moving bike supplies the motion; the figure does not actively pedal or steer.
Is it a build-it-yourself tutorial?
Not on the strength of the linked coverage alone. Hackster characterizes the associated Instructables post as a build log rather than a complete tutorial, although it says that post includes more detail about constructing the sidecar. The available descriptions explain the design, but they do not establish a verified parts list or tested step-by-step construction instructions.

What should a similar project involve?
The design suggests several substantial fabrication and integration tasks, rather than a simple modification to a store-bought prop:
- Choose the display format. A stationary scene avoids the added work of a moving bicycle, powered wheel, and steering system.
- Plan around the donor equipment. The original combines a bicycle with a scooter drivetrain in a sidecar; compatible parts and mounting arrangements depend on the specific build.
- Account for fabrication and articulation. The sidecar needs to house and conceal the drive, while the skeleton’s joints need enough flexibility for its hands and feet to stay positioned on the bike.
- Treat movement as a safety question. A powered, remotely steered bicycle prop should not be assumed safe for public operation without an appropriate independent assessment.
These are practical implications of the described design, not findings from hands-on testing. The reviewed coverage does not establish a current total cost, exact motor or servo ratings, battery specifications, a specific skeleton model, or safety-tested operating instructions. It also gives no component brands; categories such as an RC transmitter and receiver, speed controller, steering servo, and scooter drivetrain describe roles, not a ready-checked shopping list.

Why the “best prop” claim needs context
The headline’s “best” framing is editorial enthusiasm rather than a documented award or independent comparison. The appeal is easy to understand: a familiar bicycle seems to carry a skeleton that pedals, while the mechanism that actually moves it is hidden in the sidecar. Whether it is the right Halloween display depends on the maker’s skills, available donor parts, and willingness to tackle a moving mechanical build.
