LED pixel art is artwork designed for a low-resolution light-emitting display: each pixel in the image maps to an RGB emitter, or pixel position, on a physical LED matrix. To make it, choose a canvas that fits the matrix, create crisp bitmap artwork or animation frames, then use a compatible controller and correctly specified power supply to display it.
What makes LED pixel art different?
A matrix puts a fixed number of light-emitting pixels in a physical grid. That grid sets the artwork’s maximum resolution: a 64×32 matrix has 64 columns and 32 rows, so a one-to-one image for it uses a 64×32 canvas. The individual LEDs produce the image; the artwork is not a printed picture placed on top of the display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThink of the matrix as both canvas and constraint. At a small resolution, every pixel has a visible job: a few carefully chosen colors and clear silhouettes often communicate better than soft gradients or fine texture. The image may look blocky on a computer screen, but the relevant test is how it reads when the LEDs are lit from the intended viewing distance.

How to make artwork for an LED matrix
1. Find the display’s actual pixel dimensions
Use the panel’s resolution—not its width in inches or centimeters—as the canvas size. If you combine panels, confirm the assembled matrix dimensions and layout before drawing. A larger physical display does not necessarily mean a higher-resolution image; panel resolution determines how many distinct pixel positions are available.
2. Choose colors and shapes for the grid
Work at the target resolution or preview the art scaled up with nearest-neighbor scaling, which keeps pixel edges hard. Favor distinct silhouettes, simple clusters of color and deliberate outlines. Anti-aliasing can introduce intermediate colors around edges, so use it only when that softened appearance is intentional and still reads clearly on the LEDs.
Pixel pitch—the distance between neighboring pixel centers—also affects how detail appears. Waveshare’s selection guidance associates finer pitch with closer viewing and more detail, while coarser pitch is aimed at viewing from farther away. Check the pitch and the intended viewing distance together when choosing a panel; the same image can read differently on matrices with different spacing. Waveshare’s LED matrix documentation provides model and selection information.

3. Export in the format your display software expects
There is no universal image-file format for every matrix and controller. Follow the display project’s requirements for file type, color depth, canvas dimensions and animation layout. For example, Adafruit’s bitmap-art slideshow tutorial for a 64×32 RGB matrix uses BMP still images up to 64 pixels wide by 32 pixels high, in 16-bit or 24-bit RGB. Its sprite-sheet animation workflow uses BMP files 64 pixels wide and a multiple of 32 pixels high, with frames stacked vertically and no border padding. Those are specifications for that tutorial, not general standards for all LED matrices. Adafruit’s LED Matrix Display guide, created by John Park and updated June 3, 2024, describes the workflow.
4. Preview the lit result
Check that important features remain legible at the actual matrix resolution. If the work is an animation, inspect each frame for unwanted jumps or stray pixels at the edges. A bitmap that looks polished when enlarged on a monitor can lose its subject when reduced to a small grid; revise the clusters, contrast or silhouette rather than relying on more pixels than the panel provides.
Choosing a panel: resolution, pitch and scan mode
Panel choice affects both the image canvas and the hardware needed to drive it. Resolution determines the canvas size; pitch and viewing distance influence apparent detail; scan mode affects controller compatibility. The following examples are manufacturer-listed P2.5 panel specifications, not specifications that apply to every panel of those dimensions.

HUB75 is a common interface for RGB LED matrix panels, but a compatible connector alone does not guarantee that a controller and panel will work together. Confirm that the controller and its firmware support the panel’s scan mode and physical dimensions. WLED’s HUB75 guide warns that choosing the wrong scan-rate option can scramble or duplicate the displayed image. Its current documentation supports HUB75 on compatible ESP32 hardware, but states that ESP32-C3, ESP32-C6 and ESP8266 do not support HUB75. For its documented four-panel 128×128 example, WLED recommends an ESP32-S3 with octal OPI PSRAM. These are WLED-specific support details; check the guide for the intended hardware and configuration. WLED’s HUB75 support guide
Power the panel separately from controller logic
HUB75 panel power is a separate budget from the controller’s logic power. WLED says to power the panels from their own 5V input rather than relying on the ESP32 logic supply. Its guide gives an approximate load of up to around 3A at full-white brightness for a 64×64 panel; that is a guide estimate, not a universal rating. Use the exact panel’s voltage and current specifications when sizing the supply, and do not assume WLED’s built-in power estimate or brightness limiter accounts for HUB75 panel load. Assemble and connect the display according to the panel and controller documentation. Before powering it, verify the panel’s required input, the supply rating, connector orientation and controller wiring. When commissioning, test a simple pattern first; a scrambled or duplicated image is a reason to check scan-rate and matrix configuration rather than redraw the artwork.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure a HUB75 display in WLED
WLED’s HUB75 setup requires compatible hardware and firmware. Its guide instructs users to select an output choice that matches the panel’s scan rate, set the physical rows and columns and total matrix dimensions, then reboot after changing HUB75 options. Consult the current guide for the exact interface labels and options for the installed WLED version; the available configuration depends on the controller and firmware. WLED’s HUB75 support guide
Do not treat “Can I use this with WLED?” as a question with one answer for all LED panels. Confirm that the panel uses a supported interface, the ESP32 variant is supported, and the scan mode and dimensions can be configured for the hardware. WLED’s documented exclusions and example hardware above apply specifically to its HUB75 support.

Is diffusion necessary?
No. Diffusion is an optional finish, not a requirement for pixel art or for creating image files. In Adafruit’s project, a black LED diffusion acrylic panel is included as a build component; using one changes the visual presentation, so decide based on the finish you want. Adafruit’s project guide
Diffusion acrylic and GOB coating serve different purposes. Waveshare describes GOB as a protective surface treatment that does not change resolution, pitch or interface, and presents it as useful where touching or humid conditions are expected. It should not be treated as a guarantee of waterproofing. Waveshare’s LED matrix documentation
Quick Recap
A practical pre-build checklist
- Canvas: Record the assembled matrix’s pixel dimensions and design within them.
- Viewing: Consider panel pitch alongside the distance from which people will view the art.
- Files: Confirm the controller or project’s required image format, color depth and animation layout.
- Compatibility: Match the panel interface and scan mode to supported controller hardware and firmware.
- Power: Check the exact panel’s voltage and current requirements and budget its power separately from controller logic.
- Finish: Decide whether diffusion or a protective coating suits the display’s intended look and use.
