“Maker” is an invitation, not a settled identity. In Liam Grace-Flood’s 2018 essay, making spans craft, art, repair, education, open-source work, digital fabrication and community practice. That breadth can bring people together, but it can also hide whose work gets recognized—and suggest that expensive tools or public-facing projects are what count.
What does “maker” mean?
Grace-Flood’s essay, published in Make: on April 16, 2018 (the page also displays April 13), asks what it means to be a maker, run a makerspace or participate in the Maker Movement. It offers no single definition. Instead, “maker” serves as an umbrella for people who create, learn, build, adapt and share in many different ways. The essay is a reflective account of the author’s observations and conversations during a year exploring maker culture, not a scientific survey or a current census of makerspaces. Read the Make: essay.
The breadth is part of the appeal: someone might use the word for craft, art, education, appropriate technology, open-source projects or digital fabrication. But an umbrella can flatten differences. A painter, a repairer and someone prototyping electronics may all make things, yet the label can still privilege certain kinds of work and ways of presenting it.

Is the Maker Movement really a movement?
The phrase has more than one meaning. It can describe hobbyist experimentation and STEM education, or a larger ambition to democratize learning, innovation and fabrication. But sharing a label does not guarantee a shared program. Grace-Flood quotes Will Holman, associated with Open Works, cautioning that calling it a movement implies a common political or unifying ideology that may not exist.
“Using the term “movement” implies a centralized political or unifying ideology, and I don’t think either of those things exist.”
There is also a tension between inclusive language and who is actually seen as a maker. Grace-Flood quotes Maker Media’s broad definition, which welcomes tinkerers, educators, parents and professionals as makers. He also notes that Make: audience surveys described an affluent, educated, mostly male audience. The essay gives no survey figures or year, so that description should not be treated as a statistic or a measurement of all maker communities.

Does making require high-tech tools?
No. Arduino boards, quadcopters and 3D printers are examples of technologies associated with maker culture in the essay, not requirements or recommendations. A tool-centered picture can make making look like an activity available only to people with specialist equipment, money and access to a lab. Grace-Flood asks whether digital-fabrication tools lower barriers or reproduce existing ones; the essay does not establish one answer for every community.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIts broader view leaves room for a sketch, a sewn object, a repaired chair, a painted surface or a shared technique to count as making. The meaningful question is not whether a project uses impressive machinery, but what people are doing, learning or creating—and who has the opportunity to take part.
What gets overlooked when making is celebrated?
Celebrating creation can unintentionally rank it above maintenance, care or analysis. Grace-Flood draws on Deb Chachra’s critique that treating making as inherently superior to “not-making”—including repair, analysis and caregiving—can repeat gendered hierarchies about whose labor is valued and whose work is made visible.

“The cultural primacy of making, especially in tech culture—that it is intrinsically superior to not-making, to repair, analysis, and especially caregiving—is informed by the gendered history of who made things, and in particular, who made things that were shared with the world, not merely for hearth and home.”
This does not mean making has no value. It means that a useful account of making should include the work that sustains people and things, not just new objects, public demonstrations or commercially legible projects. Repair and care are not lesser forms of contribution simply because they may be less visible.

“Makerspace” does not name one standard kind of place. Grace-Flood’s essay describes spaces ranging from social clubs and craft studios to incubators, open-source communities and high-tech labs. They can differ in purpose, culture, tools and governance. A room full of equipment alone does not tell you what a space values or who feels welcome there.

For someone choosing or evaluating a space, the essay’s account suggests looking beyond the tool list. Maker Tour is associated with six topics: goals, uses, pedagogy, documentation, business model and specificity. Practical questions that extend those topics include:
- Who sets the rules and makes decisions?
- Which communities does the space serve, and who is missing?
- What do participants actually do there, beyond using equipment?
- How are skills taught and knowledge documented or shared?
- What tools and materials are available, and does participation depend on costly equipment?
- How does the space pay for itself, and how does that shape access or priorities?
These are prompts for understanding a particular space, not a validated scorecard. The essay’s descriptions come from 2018 and should not be read as a present-day inventory of makerspaces.

Grace-Flood’s interpretation reaches beyond individual projects. Making can mean sharing skills, building community, responding to needs and creating change together—work that markets or centralized institutions may not provide. That is the author’s view of what making can do, not a measured outcome guaranteed by tools, programs or a makerspace label.

The essay also distinguishes design thinking from making. It quotes Katie Krummeck, then director of SMU’s K-12 Maker Education Project, describing design thinking as a specific method for human-centered problem solving, while making encompasses a broader range of tools and practices for realizing ideas, whatever creative process produced them. The distinction matters: making can be purposeful without following one prescribed method.
How to think about the maker label
You do not have to identify as a maker for your work to matter. The label can help people find community and describe shared practices, but it can also conceal differences in access, recognition and purpose. A more useful starting point is to ask what is being made or maintained, whose knowledge is involved, who benefits and which forms of work are being overlooked.
