Make: Editors’ October 18, 2024 coverage of Friday at Maker Faire Bay Area captured a wide-ranging mix: visitors could try machine knitting, see robots compete, explore open-source electronics and encounter towering illuminated art. The recap’s headline mentions school field trips, but its text gives no trip counts or school-specific details.
A Friday recap, not an upcoming event guide
Make: Editors published the live-update roundup on October 18, 2024; the page also records an October 25, 2024 update. The editors described their aim as “capturing as many makers, projects, and moments as we can.” This is a snapshot of that Friday’s fair, not a source for current dates, tickets, hours or visitor arrangements.

Visitors could try machine knitting
The Machine Knitters Guild of the San Francisco Bay Area invited visitors to use knitting machines and explore AYAB, an open-source modification involving punch cards and code. It was one example of the fair’s participatory side: attendees could engage with a craft process rather than only look at a finished object.
Open designs and electronics shared the floor with mechanical projects
A drill press designed to be printed
Steamboat Ed’s open-source design showed how a drill press could be made with 3D printing. The recap presents it as an exhibit, not a set of build instructions or a product recommendation.

Robots were set to compete in Robot Rumble. Meanwhile, Retro Roadshow presented vintage video-game machines from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, including the Atari 2600 and Atari 800. Together, these exhibits offered very different ways to encounter technology: a live contest and hands-on-era hardware.
The Dark Room scaled up the visual spectacle
