The Weather Bird is a homemade wind vane paired with a cloud-reference panel: build a lightweight bird that turns into the wind, then use its direction and the clouds you see to make a simple, general forecast. It is an observation project—not a precision weather instrument—and its cloud-and-wind patterns are designed for the Northern Hemisphere.
What the Weather Bird does
Bob Knetzger’s Weather Bird project for Make: combines a rotating bird-shaped vane with a printed panel of cloud wheels. The bird balances on a vertical pin axle and turns freely; its tail and arrowhead help it point into the wind. The panel connects observed cloud types and wind directions with likely weather sequences.
The underlying idea is that warm and cold fronts cycle around low-pressure areas, producing recurring—but not guaranteed—patterns of clouds and wind. The panel turns those patterns into a hands-on learning aid. For example, high, wispy clouds with wind from the north may point to fair, cool weather ahead. In the project’s explanation, that combination could mean the observer is west of a counter-clockwise-spinning low-pressure system after its cold front has passed. This is a Northern Hemisphere example, not a universal rule.

Materials and tools
The project uses ordinary craft materials. Make: labels it “Easy,” estimates “1 Hour,” and describes the price as “Free (with household materials)”; these are the project page’s own labels and estimate, not independently measured results.

A hot-wire foam cutter, laser cutter, and laminator are optional. You can cut the foam by hand, and laminating the printed panel is only useful if you want extra weather protection.

Build the Weather Bird
1. Cut out the bird and arrowhead
Download the bird pattern and cloud-wheel panel from the Make: project page. Print the bird pattern on heavy paper, trim it, pin it to the foam tray, and cut out the foam shape. A downloaded SVG can be used with a laser cutter, or a hot-wire cutter can shape the foam. If you prefer a simpler build, an arrowhead-and-fin shape can replace the decorative bird.

Insert the bird into one end of the large straw. Push a straight pin through the bird’s foot, through foam inside the straw, and out through the underside; the pin becomes the vertical axle. Fit the arrowhead on the other end of the straw. Place the mini-straw around the pin as a sleeve, keeping the pin perpendicular to the large straw. Check that the vane spins freely.

Blow on the vane to see whether it turns and points into the airflow. If it does not balance or rotate smoothly, trim the large straw as needed, then test it again.
3. Make the support and position the panel
Drill a small hole in the short dowel or rod to hold the mini-straw. Attach the dowel to the center of the acrylic disk with glue or a wood screw, then fit the vane into the hole. Put the printed cloud-wheel panel beneath the setup where it can be aligned to north. Laminate the panel if you want to protect it from weather; lamination is not required for the basic build.

Use the panel to make a general forecast
- Align the panel north. Set it so its directional references match the compass directions at your location.
- Observe the sky. Identify the cloud pattern that most closely matches one of the panel’s cloud wheels.
- Place the Weather Bird. Set the vane at the matching cloud wheel.
- Let the wind turn it. The vane’s direction gives the panel’s indicated forecast for that cloud-and-wind pattern.
- Record what follows. Note the clouds, wind direction, Weather Bird’s indication, an official forecast, and the weather that actually arrives.
The panel offers a heuristic: it helps you notice relationships between clouds, wind direction, and the passage of fronts. A match is a prompt to observe and compare, not a promise about what the weather will do. The project does not report a quantified accuracy rate.
Keep a weather log
A daily log makes the activity more informative than a single forecast. Write down the date and location, the cloud type you selected, the wind direction, the vane’s indication, the official forecast you checked, and what happened later. Over time, the comparison can show where the panel’s general patterns fit your observations and where local conditions differ.
