To keep receding edges aimed at the same vanishing point, anchor one end of a non-stretch string at that point, slide a paper clip along the string until it reaches the edge’s starting point, then use the taut string as a guide. Draw lightly beside it or align a ruler to it. The setup helps maintain a chosen direction; it does not determine the right vanishing point or the object’s depth for you.
What the string-and-clip guide does
In linear perspective, the horizon line represents eye level. A vanishing point is where a set of receding parallel edges appears to meet. Each guide must point toward the vanishing point that matches the direction of the edge you are drawing.
Recommended Free Tools
The string acts like a flexible straightedge between the vanishing point and the edge’s starting point. The paper clip hooks the string and lets you position that guide without moving the anchor. It is particularly useful when the vanishing point is too far away to reach conveniently with a ruler or lies beyond the sheet.
Materials and setup
- Paper and a stable drawing board or other firm backing
- Non-stretch string or thread
- A paper clip
- A pencil and a ruler or straightedge
- Tape or a pin/tack to secure the string’s fixed end
Ordinary studio or household supplies are enough; no special perspective ruler is needed. Secure the paper so it cannot slide or rotate, since a shifting sheet changes the relationship between the drawing and its guide.

How to draw a line with the guide
- Mark the perspective setup. Draw the horizon line and mark the intended vanishing point.
- Secure the string at the vanishing point. Fix it precisely with tape or a pin. If the point is outside the sheet, mark and anchor it on the surrounding board or an extended backing surface.
- Put the paper clip on the string. Hook it over the string and slide it until the string passes through the point where the receding edge begins.
- Make the guide straight. Pull the string gently until it is straight and lightly taut. Keep the anchor in place.
- Draw the construction line. Draw along the string’s direction, or set a ruler against the string and use the ruler to make the mark. Keep the line light until you have established the form.
- Check alignment as you work. Recheck the anchor, paper, and string every few lines. Reinforce only the edges that belong in the finished drawing; erase or leave the other construction lines faint.
Using the method for two-point perspective
Each vanishing point governs a different set of receding edges. Use a separate anchored guide for each point, or move one string between the two anchors. For every edge, choose the guide that matches its direction. The basic vertical edges in a typical two-point drawing remain vertical rather than converging toward either horizontal vanishing point.
When the vanishing point is off the page
Do not squeeze the drawing toward a closer, more convenient point if the perspective calls for a distant vanishing point. Extend the work surface with a board or other backing, mark the point there, and anchor the string at that location. The longer guide preserves the intended direction across the sheet.

Keeping the guide steady
- If the line curves, check for a sag, kink, or slack section. Straighten the string and keep it lightly taut.
- If the clip shifts, reposition it so the string crosses the edge’s starting point, then check the alignment before drawing.
- If the anchor moves, stop and secure it again at the marked vanishing point. Lines made after a shift will no longer share the original convergence.
- If the paper bends or the tape pulls loose, reduce the tension. Pulling hard can distort the paper or dislodge the anchor.
- If the whole setup drifts, secure the sheet and backing so neither can slide or rotate.
String versus a ruler or T-square
A ruler or straightedge works well when the vanishing point is on the sheet or close enough to reach. A T-square or straightedge can also lay out a horizon and orthogonal lines in basic perspective exercises, as in Palomar College Pressbooks’ perspective activity. An anchored string is a practical alternative when the point is distant or off the page. Choose according to whether the point is reachable, the drawing’s size, the precision you need, and whether you are working on paper or digitally; perspective rulers in drawing software are a separate digital option.

The guide keeps a line aligned with the vanishing point you selected, but it cannot tell you whether that point, horizon, or object depth is correct. You still need to identify which edges recede in each direction and choose the perspective setup. The method is a mechanical drawing aid, not a guarantee of accuracy; no controlled study or numerical comparison establishing its accuracy benefit is reported in the cited sources.

Make’s Gareth Branwyn described a draftsman using string anchored to a drafting board and a paper clip to guide perspective lines while drawing a building. That account documents the technique in use, but does not provide a measured performance result: Make’s 2016 description.
