Yes—you can make experimental black-and-white photographic material by preparing a silver-gelatin emulsion and coating it onto a support. Making a coated glass plate is a more approachable first project; making flexible film that coats evenly, survives handling and travels reliably through a camera is substantially harder. The documented process is experimental, not a way to reproduce standardized commercial stock at home.
What homemade photographic film is
Black-and-white silver-gelatin film has light-sensitive silver salts suspended in gelatin and held on a support. In a roll film, that support is flexible plastic. During exposure, light forms an image in the emulsion; chemical development turns exposed silver halide into metallic silver, and fixer removes the remaining unexposed silver halide. The Metropolitan Museum of Art explains the construction and historical supports in its Photography: Processes and Preservation overview.
Preparing a light-sensitive emulsion is only one part of film-making. A practical camera strip also needs a suitable base, a reasonably uniform coating, careful drying and handling, and dimensions and surface properties that let it pass through the intended camera or printer. Esther Urlus’s 2013 booklet, Re:Inventing the Pioneers, identifies even coating and reliable transport as major challenges.

Start with a glass plate
If your main goal is to learn how silver-gelatin emulsion behaves, a glass plate avoids the extra problems of making and transporting a flexible strip. The George Eastman Museum’s past workshop, ONLINE—Let’s Make Gelatin Emulsions Like George (Basics), documented emulsion preparation and coating glass plates. Its listing describes a historical event, not a currently available class.

Move to flexible film only if you need a camera strip
Flexible film adds coating uniformity, base compatibility, slitting and—depending on the format—perforation and transport requirements. A George Eastman Museum workshop documented a 35mm motion-picture workflow: “The group will make a gelatin silver bromide emulsion, coat acetate film base, then slit and perforate it.” Participants then exposed, chemically processed and scanned the material. This is evidence that such a workshop process has been demonstrated, not proof that dependable camera stock is easy to make at home. See the museum’s past event listing for 35mm Motion Picture Film Making, Session I.

- Prepare a silver-gelatin emulsion. A home-brew 16mm guide describes silver nitrate, potassium bromide and gelatin as a starting point for making silver-bromide emulsion. Use a tested specialist method for actual quantities and conditions.
- Coat a suitable support. Apply the emulsion to glass for a plate experiment, or to an appropriate film base for a flexible strip. An even, usable coating is a central difficulty, not a cosmetic detail.
- Dry and handle the coated material appropriately. Keep the light-sensitive coating protected from unwanted exposure and damage while it is being prepared. Follow the specialist method and chemical suppliers’ safety information.
- Prepare the format if making film. Slit the coated base to the intended width and perforate it if the camera or printer requires perforations. The stock must also travel reliably through the equipment.
- Expose and process a test. Expose the material, develop it to form a silver image, and fix it to remove unexposed silver halide. Inspect or scan the result to assess whether the coating and processing worked.
What results to expect
Expect experimental sensitivity and variation, not a dependable ISO rating or commercial-film consistency. Urlus reported that the home-brew emulsion in the 2013 booklet had sensitivity around 1–2 ASA. That figure describes that particular emulsion; it is not a general speed specification for homemade film. The booklet describes the emulsion as fragile and the sensitivity as very low, and recommends printing exposure for its material.
The documented workflows support a monochrome silver-gelatin approach. The 16mm booklet treats color film-making as an aspiration rather than providing a demonstrated contemporary color-film recipe. The sources do not establish that a general home process will produce standardized speed, consistent batches, modern panchromatic response or commercial color performance.

Film base and preservation
Support material affects both handling and long-term stability. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the historical use of cellulose nitrate, acetate and polyester supports; flexible plastic made roll film practical, but older bases have preservation problems. The Australian Museum’s Photographic film formats at the Australian Museum notes that nitrate film is highly flammable, cellulose acetate can deteriorate while releasing acetic acid, and polyester is more stable than acetate.
This is preservation context, not a recommendation to coat discarded or unidentified old film. For any base you intend to use, establish what it is and whether it is in sound condition; do not treat an old strip as a suitable substrate merely because it is transparent.
