Historic Hawaiian shark-tooth weapons are documented in several forms, not one standard design. This guide explains what museum and state records say about leiomano, their materials, and their cultural context; it is not a practical weapon-making tutorial. The records describe individual objects, not a safe or culturally complete method for making one.
What does “leiomano” mean in the records?
“Leiomano” is a name used for shark-tooth weapons in Bishop Museum records. The objects described by museums vary: one has multiple teeth set around a wooden edge, while another British Museum record describes a large tooth attached to a right-angled wooden handle. These differences are evidence of varied recorded forms, not proof that the objects had identical functions.
The surviving descriptions are collection entries for particular objects. They should not be treated as a universal Hawaiian design or complete construction specifications.

How do documented examples differ?

The British Museum’s Oc1944,02.706 record also includes a historical curator comment mentioning a clam-shell object notched to resemble teeth. That comment is distinct from the current materials description of the catalogued weapon; it does not change the materials listed for the object.
What materials are documented?
The records identify wood, natural shark teeth, bone carved in a tooth shape, and plant-fibre cordage. The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources describes wooden clubs and daggers lined with shark teeth. Together, these accounts show that collections include both shark teeth and carved substitutes, but they do not establish a single material recipe.

Because the entries do not provide a consistent account of how each object was made, their materials should be read as descriptions of individual artifacts—not as instructions for assembling or sharpening a weapon.
What was the cultural context of shark teeth?
Shark teeth were not associated only with weapons. The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources’ “Ancient Uses” page says they were believed to have served as cutting edges for tools, including kapa implements and detailed carving. It also describes shark-tooth patterns in kapa and on a Bishop Museum feather cloak associated with Kiwalaʻō, a fellow warrior of Kamehameha. The state page connects the shark’s fierceness with the wearer of that cloak.

The department characterizes the weapons this way: “Heavy wooden clubs and daggers lined with shark teeth were damaging, even fatal, weapons.” That description is a reminder that these are weapons with real potential for harm, not a suitable subject for a build tutorial.

A British Museum exhibition guide groups leiomano with Hawaiian close-contact weapons, refers to chiefs trained in lua, and says such weapons fell into disuse after the battle of Kuamoʻo. That is the guide’s interpretation; it should not be taken as a comprehensive account of Hawaiian martial history.

Individual catalog records also have limits. For example, the British Museum dates Oc,HAW.187 uncertainly and gives no known acquisition details. A museum label can help identify a collected object and record its described materials, but it cannot by itself establish how common a form was, exactly how it was made, or the full meaning it held in its original context.
How to learn more responsibly
For further study, consult the collection records and cultural material published by Hawaiian institutions, paying attention to which claims describe an individual artifact and which provide broader context. A Hawaiian weapons history or material-culture book can be a useful next step when its author, scope, and sources are clear. Treat museum objects as historical evidence, not patterns for reproducing a functional weapon.
