To repair a small hole in a wool sweater with needle felting, place loose wool roving over the opening and repeatedly punch it with a barbed felting needle so the fibers catch in the surrounding knit. The mend can secure a small hole or thin worn spot, but the felted patch does not stretch. It is therefore a poor fit for damage at a high-stretch area or for a repair that must preserve the sweater’s original flexibility.
When needle felting is a suitable repair
Needle felting is an option for small holes caused by moths, burns, or worn fabric, as well as thin spots that need reinforcement. The Rochester Knitting Guild’s mending guide describes placing loose wool over the damage and felting it into place. The result is a compacted felt area, not a knitted section, so it will not stretch like the surrounding fabric.
Choose another approach or seek a repair assessment if the hole is large, the knit is delicate, the damage is where the sweater stretches substantially, or the garment is valuable. Those situations may call for a sewn repair or a professional’s judgment rather than added felt.

What you need
- Wool roving suited to felting: Choose a color that blends with the sweater or a deliberate contrast. Superwash wool is less suited because processing calms the fiber scales that help wool felt, as explained in Ohio State University Extension’s needlecraft reference.
- A felting needle: These needles have barbs and are sharp and brittle. Handle them carefully and keep fingers clear of the needle’s path.
- A foam block or needle-felting pad: Place it behind the damaged area to provide a receptive surface for the needle. A rolled towel or foam cushion is also suggested by the Rochester Knitting Guild. Avoid a fibrous surface that could felt into the sweater; Ohio State University Extension cautions that a pad can become attached to the project.
- Optional scissors: Use them only to tidy loose fibers. Do not cut intact sweater stitches around the hole.
Ohio State University Extension lists 36-gauge needles for coarse work, 38 gauge as a commonly used size for quicker work, and 40 gauge for fine detail; the publication year is not established in the reviewed source. These are general needlecraft references, not a tested prescription for a particular sweater or roving.
How to felt the repair
- Position the sweater. Lay it flat and put the foam block or suitable pad behind the hole. Make sure the work surface supports the area without catching on the surrounding knit.
- Lay roving over the opening. Pull off a small, loose wisp and place it across the hole, overlapping the intact fabric around its edge so fibers can catch there.
- Punch carefully. Hold the felting needle vertically and make short, controlled jabs through the roving and knit. Keep your other hand and fingers away from the needle’s path.
- Add fibers gradually. If the opening is not held closed, add small wisps and continue punching. Avoid excessive punching or pulling the knit out of shape; there is no established universal jab count or durability threshold.
- Check the back and work surface. Lift the sweater periodically to make sure it is not becoming attached to the pad.
- Stop and inspect. Check both sides and stop when the opening is secured and the surface looks even enough for the intended finish. Color, knit construction, fiber, and technique affect the appearance, so an invisible result is not assured.
Choose a repair method that fits the damage
Needle felting is one of several options. The right choice depends on the hole’s size and location, the knit’s weight, how much stretch the area needs, and whether you want a visible mend.

| Damage or priority | Possible method | What to consider |
|---|---|---|

| Hole in a medium- or heavy-weight knit; a sewn woven repair is preferred | Surface or woven darning | iFixit’s woven-darning tutorial identifies the surface method as better suited to medium-to-heavy yarns; lightweight knits need another approach. |
| Thin area or small snag that needs reinforcement | Duplicate stitch | Donna Wilson’s care and repair guidance recommends it for worn areas or small snags that could worsen. |
| A visible decorative mend or broader coverage is wanted | Patch | Donna Wilson describes patching with a blanket stitch or other methods in its repair guidance. |
| Damage is difficult to repair or the garment is valuable | Professional assessment | iFixit’s guide notes that Patagonia items can be taken to a local store for evaluation or sent through a mail-in service. Check current terms and regional eligibility directly with Patagonia. |

Follow the sweater’s sewn-in care label. Woolmark advises checking the care claim before washing and drying knitwear flat in the shade. Its wool-sweater washing guidance and drying guidance caution against direct heat and sunlight; recovery may not be possible after severe felting from an inappropriate wash.
