This classic dice popper is a small DIY board-game die agitator: a die tumbles inside a clear vending-machine capsule set in a spring-loaded wooden housing. The capsule determines the fit, so measure it before cutting any wood. The project is attributed to Toronto maker Gus Dassios and is a build, not a verified retail model.
How the dice popper works
A die sits inside a closed, clear plastic capsule. The capsule fits into a wooden housing above a compression spring; pressing it agitates the die. The project instructions describe it as a way to “roll” a die for a board game, but do not establish that its results are statistically fair or unbiased.

Materials and tools
The plans call for a clear plastic vending-machine capsule approximately 2 inches in diameter and 1 7/8 inches high, plus one die. Because capsule shape and dimensions determine the openings, obtain and measure the capsule before cutting.
- Compression spring: 3/8 inch in diameter, 2 inches long, with .035-inch wire
- Wood in 1/4-inch and 3/4-inch thicknesses; five pieces, each cut to 3 1/2 × 3 1/2 inches
- Four #8 × 3/4-inch flathead wood screws
- Four small 1 3/4-inch finishing nails
- Drill and bits, hole saw, saw, hammer, and screwdriver

Cut the openings to match your capsule
The five square wood pieces form the stacked housing. The plans specify different openings through the layers:
- Upper opening: 1 7/8 to 2 inches, depending on the capsule’s domed half.
- Middle pieces: 2 1/8-inch holes for the capsule base.
- Lower piece: a centered 3/8-inch hole to guide the spring.
Do not assume that a capsule labeled around 2 inches will fit without checking it. Its diameter, height, and dome shape affect the openings and how it sits in the housing. The Make: Easy 1+2+3 Projects publisher preview also presents the Dice Popper chapter.

Assemble the popper
- Cut the five wood pieces to 3 1/2 × 3 1/2 inches, then make the openings specified for each layer. Check the capsule against the upper and middle openings before final assembly.
- Assemble the lower block with the finishing nails, keeping the centered spring-guide hole aligned.
- Position the spring in the guide hole.
- Put the die in the closed capsule and lower the capsule into the wooden block.
- Fasten the top plate with the four screws.

“Classic Dice Popper” here means Dassios’s DIY wooden build. It is not the same as Toysmith’s tactile “Poppin’ Dice” or MunnyGrubbers’ commercial Castle Dice Popper. The Castle Dice Popper manual’s advice for a dome that catches on that toy’s inside wall—including smoothing or rotating the dome, or using lubricant—is specific to that product and is not established as a fix for this wooden DIY design.
