Make scratch-off Valentine cards by writing a hidden message on cardstock, protecting it with clear tape or liner, then painting over that spot. When the paint dries, the recipient can scrape it away with a coin to reveal your note. These are homemade message cards styled like lottery tickets—not state lottery tickets or official lottery scratchers.
What you need
- Cardstock, plus a printer or markers for the visible design and hidden message
- Acrylic or metallic acrylic craft paint
- Clear packing tape, clear shelf liner, or contact paper
- A small paintbrush or foam brush
- Scissors; optionally, a paper trimmer and stencil material
- Dish soap only if you are following a paint-and-soap method
- A coin for the recipient to scratch with, if you want to include one

Choose how to make the scratch-off panel
Paint directly on the card
Write or print the secret on the card, cover it with clear tape or liner, and position a heart-shaped stencil over the protected message. Brush paint into the stencil opening. Skip To My Lou’s tutorial describes using about two coats and removing the stencil while the paint was slightly wet; if the message shows through, its author recommends touching up with a small brush. These are that tutorial’s observations, not guaranteed results for every paint or surface. See the Skip To My Lou instructions.
Attach a separate scratch-off shape
Make the card and reveal panel separately: write the secret on a small cardstock shape, cover it with clear packing tape, paint the scratch area, then attach it to the finished card. First Day of Home describes cutting separate cardstock shapes for this approach. It can be convenient when preparing a batch because you can paint the panels apart from the cards. Make a scratch-off Valentine
- Design the card. Print or draw a Valentine on cardstock, leaving a clear spot for the hidden message.
- Add the secret. Write or print a short message in the reveal area before applying the coating.
- Protect the writing. Cover it with clear packing tape, shelf liner, or contact paper so the paint sits on the clear layer rather than directly on the message.
- Define the reveal shape. Place a heart stencil over the spot if painting directly on the card, or cut a separate cardstock panel to attach later.
- Paint the panel. Brush on a thin coat of acrylic or metallic acrylic paint. Add dish soap only when following a method that calls for it; it is not a universal requirement.
- Let the coat dry before adding another. More than one coat appears in the tutorials, but they do not establish a drying time that applies to every paint and surface.
- Finish the shape. If using a stencil, lift it carefully. If lettering remains visible through the coating, add a small touch-up coat. For a separate panel, attach it to the card once painted.
- Test before making a batch. Scratch one sample with a coin or card edge. Adjust your coating if needed before preparing the rest.
How to handle common snags
The message is showing through
Add a touch-up coat over the protected reveal spot. Skip To My Lou describes this fix, though results will depend on the paint and materials you use.
The stencil is hard to lift
Skip To My Lou reports that lifting its stencil while the paint was slightly wet was easier. Try that on a sample first, since timing can vary by paint.

You are unsure whether to add dish soap
Follow the instructions for the particular method you choose, then test it on a spare piece. First Day of Home and The Scrap Room include paint-and-soap approaches, while Skip To My Lou says its dried acrylic paint scratched without soap. No single formula is established for all paints and surfaces.

A DIY scratch-off message card is a craft; it is not an official lottery ticket and does not award a lottery prize. State lottery templates are for presenting real tickets. For example, Virginia Lottery’s template instructions say to print at actual size, cut and fold a pocket, tape it inside the card, and insert scratchers: Virginia Lottery Valentine’s Day template. New Mexico Lottery states, “Lottery tickets are for ages 18 and older,” on its page about a scratcher bouquet: New Mexico Lottery Valentine’s Day Scratcher Bouquet. That age statement concerns actual lottery tickets, not homemade cards containing a personal message.
